Purple lasers sizzle near my feet and track me.
Hello. I just started this game not even 48 hours ago and I've stumbled upon some unexplainable thing. Today I was for the second time in the Space Anomaly base and I saw the green symbol over Nexus. I went and started the green mission, being warped to some system full of people and balloons with ellipsises over planets (as in punctuation marks).

When I started walking, I occasionally see something sparking below my feet or on the other side of a building wall. If I look closely, I see some purple ray, maybe laser, coming to my location from unknown direction, often seemingly from inside the planet or right through it. Moreover, it tracks me with super precision. I can move few steps but the laser moves instantly too, as I do.

One time I went to space station in that system and the laser started tracking me there too, from outside. When I moved to the window I saw the purple ray going through space, who knows from where, and hitting outer hull of the space station, still tracking my position.

Anyone knows what's that? It doesn't hurt me, probably because I turned off the PVP option, but it's annoying to say the least. Please tell me how to get rid of it.

EDIT after a week:
Another 'weekly mission', lots of players and again, sizzling + sparkling purple lasers. This time I was prepared to hit screenshot key so I managed to take some. All three of them are in a space station of that system. Whenever I tried to look at the direction it comes from, I found a player marker right in the middle. So my guess is players indeed are the source of it and I would like to know how and possibly why.

Oh, and since last week I got an Exocraft mobile vehicle and attached a laser to it. It's the same color as these ones. So a player in an Exocraft somehow fires at me with aimbot precision wherever I might currently be within that system.

Purple lasers? I think you're misunderstanding something about the HUD.

The mission you are referring to is a weekend event. The balloons as you call them are markers telling you where points of interest are, like communication stations and where the mission is.

The only thing that the purple laser could be is someone else's ship trail flying through space, and the thing hitting the hull of the space station is actually a person entering it or flying past it.

Any pictures? 🤔

OK, I've just read what's a communication station on the wiki but I never knew they appear like ellipsises from space.

I don't think disregarding two thirds of my post and going on about what could it possibly be in space only is the right approach here. No, these aren't starship engine trails, they sizzle and spark few millimeters from my position, possibly hitting my own character's hitbox. They also TRACK me, meaning they go wherever I go, both on the ground and in space. It feels like I'm playing some FPS game with a player who has a laser and an aimbot and is able to shoot through walls.
Within NMS I've only seen continuous lasers of multitool (well, my own) which are green or teal that turn yellow then red when overheating. I saw pirates firing at me with double green lasers too. Are there any weapons that produce bright-purple, almost pink rays? It feels exactly like these pirate lasers but color is different and there's only one ray.

purple lasers? wow, that's a new one...

orange lasers tracking you, well that's pretty common... now, light green lasers tracking you, that's actually a sign of luck, they say, and then dark grey lasers with kinda swirly patterns tracking you... well then you need a shower

but purple lasers? never heard of that :steamsunny:
If you are making a joke, it's lost on me. Thank you for your answer, though, whatever it is supposed to be.

Interesting, get that screenshot.

Don't worry, I read your post and am not disregarding any of it. It just doesn't make sense because I've played nms for over 300 hours and still am lost by what you mean by "They track me" and "purple lasers".

And yes. What deadly peanut said was a joke.
HolyHandGrenade Jun 26, 2021 @ 10:00am
Now, you could be talking about meteors, which are blue, and do land on the ground and "track" you in a way. But it's hard to tell because there is no such thing as a purple, sparking lasers in nms as far as I can tell.

During expeditions, when I was in MP, I would get a similar effect. (I don't remember it being purple, but that could be a MT mod of some kind) It looked like someone was shooting me but I could never see anyone.

It quit as soon as I turned off MP. I chalked it up to some Interloper trying to be annoying or even kill me. Could not see anyone but maybe there is a way to set the network, or mod, that allows you to be Ninja.
Azure Fang Jun 26, 2021 @ 10:18am
That's been happening to me since Expeditions dropped- always in MP-active systems, only when I'm in the space station, and only when I'm facing the general direction of another player. I think something's going wonky with mining laser rendering. Make sure to report it via Zendesk.

Try turning off MP and see if it goes away.
Scar99 Jun 27, 2021 @ 4:10pm
It happens to me all the time. Always in multiplayer and in a system with other players. I was assuming it was cheaters testing if I have damage "on" by shooting me trough the planet. But it's probably a bug.

I was playing some during past week, all by myself and met no other players except in Space Anomaly. So you could say I wasn't doing MP. The topical issue didn't manifest at all during the whole week, so I can say it goes away when not in MP. Compared to today, where I was in a system with actual players, it took no more than 30 minutes for something like this to happen. I wonder why only one person has admitted seeing this phenomenon.
Patola [Linux] Sep 9, 2021 @ 6:51am
Hey, I'm having this issue right now, in VR even, in the latest patch, during Expeditions 3. Any way to turn that off? It's annoying as hell. I can't even see where the ray is coming from. And how do these players get the purple color on whatever they're doing?

This caused by other people in Exocrafts. Whenever I play MP with a friend or in expeditions, where there are a few people around, it happens. Turn off multi-player if you want it to go away
