One of the games is in american (US) environment. One is in european environment.
Play whatever you prefer. Many players have and play both games.
When relaxing with the truck sims i usually spend around an hour on each
But recent dlc and updates (Austria and Switzerland) that have been done are all of great quality.
I have about a 5/1 preference for ETS2, there are a few minor difference between the games (aside from trucks and trailers), but the ones that are just annoy me too much (except one) to play it often.
pros: more speed, heavy/wide loads are actually working
cons: scales.. alot of them.., boring highways(you are as fast as anyone else...)
ETS2
pros: good highways with proper traffic(you will be overtaken), more diverse landscape and roads
cons: "slow"...max 90km/h, unrealistic police presents :)
there are more things but the game is mostly the same.
ETS also has more variety. You get a wide selection of scenery and architecture to look at from all the different countries as you pass through. While ATS is all one country where all the structures are broadly the same, and all the cities feel similar. Plus in landscape you have 'desert', 'forest', and 'dry grassland', and not much else beyond that, it's always one of those three.
Another difference is the roads. ETS's roads are much narrower, more twisty, and challenging. While ATS's fare are almost all very wide and mostly straight, built for cruising with the CC on rather than winding around obstacles and through scenery.
All told, I do generally prefer ETS myself. However that's not to say that ATS is a bad game, they're both great. Just that ETS feels a little more immersive, engaging, and challenging.
Though I'll also say that ETS 2 is MEGA on-sale, so it might be worth getting just so you can try it for yourself and see which you prefer. :)
