I will start without mods, and even to play in multiplayer is better
Then there is stuff that needs you to prepare the game in the old version, like truck or tuning part mods. If these become incompatible you need to set your game to the old version, sell all trucks / parts from the mod and only then update to the new version, unless the modder deliveres an updated mod quickly.
And finally there are some mods (don't know examples) that dig so deep into the profile that you will never be able to remove them. Once they become incompatible and unsupported any profile you used these mods on are broken and lost.
Map mods are difficult to remove, although not impossible. So these you should consider the last category as well, although it is not completely impossible to remove them.
I personally have real company, gas station and advert poster mods and getting later into the year will soon start using Grimes early autumn mod. But I don't use truck, tuning or physics mods.
Have a second profile for Promods map mod, but not played for 3 years now. It is complex to download (or to be paid for an easy download) and install. Plus the ever improving base map starts making Promods and its effort to keep it up to date less attractive.
That is down to you.
Personally I only ran the vanilla game for a week before discovering mods.
I started on 1.36 so that gives you some idea how long I have had the game.
I run quite a big mod library and, for me, although the game is getting better there is so much that is added by the mods I use that i cannot play a vanilla game.
I use Pro Mods and Vanilla map (with all dlc's) and use the Mods with both.
If you use mods be prepared for some frustrating times when updates come out and the you are required to get (not all though) your "broken" mods to work with the latest update.
Mods != officially licensed
The above being said, once a player has gotten a feel for the title and tested it somewhat, I believe it's then perfectly fair to think what they don't like about the game and look for a mod to change that element, or figure out some things that they really feel would add to the experience and find ones which include them. Mods definitely can add to a game significantly if done right, and make the whole experience much more entertaining. For example, while the base game of ETS2 is really good, I feel it is so much improved by the Promods map mod, and could never go back to playing the vanilla experience now that I've tried it. I would respectfully take issue with anyone who says that 'mods are always bad and you should never use them' - this really isn't the case for everyone.
Obviously using mods can also cause problems with regard to game updates etc, so it is good to try and limit the number of mods you use as much as possible, try to have only the absolute essentials. And you have to be prepared to take responsibility for any possible issues, and understand the risks involved, perhaps keeping backups of your saves etc. But so long as you do, mods can definitely add to the experience.
Also back up game (I do at least once a week, whether you use mods or not), to external source (ie thumb drive) in case of major game crash, hardware failure, OS re-installation and/or any other disasters that may befall you.
I never use the cloud after several issues with reloading saves.
I totally agree...I had the same experience when I first started playing ATS and ETS 2 about 6 years ago...I now play totally Vanilla on my main profile...and occasionally keep a second profile for fooling around with mods that may interest me....but generally mods cause more trouble than they are worth...IMHO.
