Both ATS and ETS2 have demo versions.
It would be quicker to play the demo version for now.

Both this game and its sibling American Truck Simulator are constantly updated, both feature-wise and graphics. In these 10+ years a lot have happened.

Which one is better is very subjective. Basically it is the same game but in american respective european environment.

Many players, including me, play both games.

American Truck Simulator and Euro Truck Simulator are essentially the same game, with different geographical locations and different trucks .. they are made by the same Developer, SCS, and run on the same game-engine .. Graphics are nearly identical, performance is nearly identical. There are very minor differences as the Development teams work on different aspects of each game individually, but they are pretty much the same.

To me the Euro trucks feel smoother and easier to drive, I guess because they are flat-faced and lack the snouts of the US trucks. They can make tighter turns and feel more like a car, while driving the American trucks feel more like driving heavy tanks. I switch based on what I'm in the mood for. Euro has more diverse environments too if you include all DLCs.

Euro Truck Simulator 2 also has lots of Country DLC. The base game includes Southern UK, Germany, Part of France, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Part of Poland, The Netherlands.

There is weather, only including sun and rain. There are mods that introduce snow, but it's all or nothing.

have switched completely to Ats because ETS2 has become worse in many ways. many big players play ats more, More sound mod, more challenges , more graphics mod on Ats

Both.

Both have the same graphics but the maps/roads. ETS 2 still has roads from its early days but they are slowly overhauling towards nowadays quality.

Those two drive differently.

ETS 2 = More technical roads, slower, tighter and sometimes richer environments on latest DLCs locations.

ATS = Faster, wider, bigger. Lots of space, so you can get less crowded delivery areas, but you can fix that with a bigger truck especially the 8x6 configurations some trucks have.

For me, both complement each other. Eventhough I like ATS more, I couldn't call a complete experience without ETS2. Consequentially, I have similar hours on both as I usually alternate between them.

Infinite replay value as the pleasure comes from pure driving.

Happy trucking.

I prefer ETS2, for the reasons mentioned in this post here:

However as others have said above they are very similar, and I do like them both a lot.

While many of the comments are mostly right I would like to put my own works here. While ATS and ETS2 are on the same engine and made by the same devs ETS2 in the older areas and especially the older trucks shows it age very poorly. While SCS has been proven that they are going to update the older parts of the map (Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Czech republic, Benelux and the UK) there is no sign of the older trucks ever getting a re-texture. But if your able to overlook this then ETS2 has far more diversity in its locations compared to ATS in my personal experience. Each country has its own feel and road conditions vs ATS with the same roads almost everywhere. But I enjoy the ATS trucks more then ETS2 since I have experience with ATS trucks in real life.

If you want a short overview here is what ETS2 has over ATS in my own eyes.
Slower top speed trucks
Less trailer diversity
Every truck is more or less the same looks wise with only slight differences
Much better trucks at maneuvering
More unique cities and roads
More unique truck and trailer customization
Required Ferries
Better base game paint wraps (company logos can be applied to trailers and trucks why is this not in ATS is beyond me as base game)
Many more types of unique roads
(feels like) Larger Base game drivable area (though a lot of it still stuck 10 years ago)
(If fatigue is on) less driving time.
Simplified speed limits
Better value map DLC's
Worse Cargo value DLC's
Great trailer DLC's
Very good vehicle customization DLC's.

There is more but this gets my point across.

To further elaborate, the game is actually permanently in the Summer Solstice (June 21st). There are mods that will adjust the sunrise/sunset time accordingly. I use one that updates every week and it's amazing, using one of map mods (Promods), being in the far north you can see it be almost a full 24 hours of night at the peak of winter.

There is rain, but no snow. Some map mods do include frozen regions where the truck might not grip as well (Promods, for example includes Svalbard and Iceland.)

There are map expansion DLCs indeed in this game, and they're well worth it IMO, especially the more recent ones.

I am trying out ETS2 as an ATS player who has never been to Europe and wanted to see the differences. They are different flavors of the same engine, and lists here do a good job summarizing where ETS2 excels.

- I'm still learning to grasp the handling of the Euro trucks, which seem far more touchy on the accelerator / shifting / RPMs than their American counterparts.

- ETS2 may have older zones that pale in comparison to some of the latest DLC landmarks and cities, but I can't tell the difference or am not bothered by it. More bedazzled at trying to drive in a foreign country. That said, ATS cities have replicated some distinct landmarks in good detail.

- ATS has some environment variation but the American southwest and moving into the Great Plains have a narrower range of environments / biomes, though what they did replicate does match the feel of the different states based on my personal observation travelling them in real life. Travelling through so many different countries in ETS2, I'm sure you'll have more variety just based on culture alone, where there is a homogeneity to ATS.

If you're an American, you may want to start with ATS just for having that familiarity compliment the driving experience until you get more proficient with truck driving and not have cultural differences get in the way of the driving experience.

I would recommend eventually trying both as the core driving simulation gets the job done, and you do learn a bit about trucking. I don't think either can be said to be a "better" game, just different strengths and weaknesses.

with each DLC the graphics apparently get better and ATS has lots of them

I prefer ETS2, I think Europe is a much more interesting place to drive.
