Mercedes NG / SK - was intended as the successor for the medium sized cubic class. It was aiming on 3rd world long haul and European construction, heavy distributor and medium distance traffic. There should be a more sophisticated model for European long haul, as the cubic models also had been split into three different models. Due to the 1973 oil crisis and its impact on the automotive industry Mercedes had to save and placed the NG also in European long distance traffic.
The first models did not even have full width cabs missing 10 cm each side. Could be easily seen in a 80es German trucker TV series when the two heroes drive through the Sahara side by side and the one's Mercedes NG is significantly narrower than the other's MAN F8. 1980 they finally found some centimetres of metal to put in between to get full cab width.
Then again, Berliet TR LeCentraure (who invented it), Volvo F12 Globetrotter (who did not), MAN F90 and DAF 3300 came up new or during facelifts with high roofs, Scania Series 2 and Iveco Turbo Star to a lesser extend. Mercedes did wait for this step until pressure was too big and introduced a high roof with the SK.
These trucks were a compromise that however was cheap and linked the premium brand Mercedes within the trucking industry for decades with the image of a cheap fleet workhorse built not for drivers but for fleet managers and always a step behind the rest in development.
The cab was used on a wide range of different trucks. It was even used on Mack trucks in the USA. It remained in production for almost a quarter of a century.[3] Although initially intended for medium trucks it was also used on light trucks, even the 6-tonne Magirus 90M6FK.

cheap parts, dashboard bore, bottom of the doors completely rusted through in 3 years.
replace brackets (mirrors) with hangers every 5 years.
Push the clutch pedal forward, with springs at a fixed point under the dashboard before returning, so that the springs fold around every 80,000 km, if you're not lucky right past your face.

No I'm serious, they just don't work for me. The big grey grille which you can't paint a different colour, the bulbous shape of the cab like a boiled sweet or a blister...their styling just doesn't suit my preferences.
Not to say I don't respect them for their capabilities and their popularity - I know they do their job well and admire their performance. But I just can't bring myself to buy one, I much prefer the DAF Euro XF or the Ovlov FH16.
