HELP Main Menu Music not playing
I honestly don't know why I am having this problem.

After 6 months of not having played Fallout NV (and I didnt have this problem before), I wanted to return to the game today. Only to realize that for some reason, the main menu music does not play.

This is where things get weird:

- the launcher music is playing without problems

- the in game music plays without problems (both radio and environmental)

- I checked for the existence of the MainTitle.mp3 music file in the Data\Music\Special folder. It is there and isnt corrupted or anything (plays fine with Windows Media Player). It is also spelled correctly (MainTitle.mp3 ...not Main Title.mp3)

- Other music files from this same folder play in the game too (like the one when you die), so it cannot be a corrupted folder path.

- I unchecked ALL running mods to see if that solved the problem - nope.

And the most bizarre thing of all: I launched Fallout 3 to see whether the music worked fine there - NOOOOOOOOOOOPE!!!!! Launcher music works too, and the main menu is silent there too.

I never had this problem before...I am thinking it is some codec issue (but I have no problems with any other games I am playing) so what gives?

Any help would be appreciated.

Hm, after a bit of Googling, it does appear to be a codec issue.

There were a few fixes, but this one ( http://newvegas.nexusmods.com/mods/35868/? ) is probably worth a try. Make sure you read the instructions and how to reverse the process if it doesn't work or does something not intended.

It doesn't work for Windows 8, and I've got the problem now. Anyone else have any ideas?

You can do a more reliable codec reset by reinstalling the sound card's factory drivers. It helped for me and a bunch of people.

I HAVE THE SAME ♥♥♥♥ PROBLEM HELP

It's a codec issue. Try to go for the jugular of the problem and reinstall your sound card drivers. That resets codec priority and often fixes that problem.
Also, the game doesn't like USB speakers/headsets and non-stereo setups. It is always worth a try to set your audio setup to 2.0 stereo in WIndows control panel.

I think this is an issue with windows 8 and 10. I did reinstall all of my audio drivers nothing... this is the only game that is doing this ♥♥♥♥. I am on windows 10 pro N with a Razer Tiamat 7.1 headphone.

It's the headphone and a known problem with the audio in this game if you have that Razer driver installed that lets you hear surround on the headphone. Since it is an incompatibility issue, you cannot use both: either remove the Razer drivers entirely and use the headphone as 2.0, or get another speaker/headphone that plugs into the standard audio-out jack.

I don't have any razer drivers installed... the razer manual says my headphones are analouge and should work directly when I plug it. I set it to 2.0 stereo still nothing. Although I have this ordinary headphone lying around I will check it out if it works there. BTW Skyrim works absolutely fine.

I installed a moded radio from nexus and it also skips / garbles the music wtf

Skyrim has different codec, thankfully. If NV has issues, then FO3 and Oblivion are the ones that tend to have the exact same problem.

I know, necro bump. Hate to do it.

Had this exact problem, Steam Proton in Linux, two Nvidia GPU over HDMI (AMD GPU over HDMI was fine). Information at https://www.reddit.com/r/fnv/wiki/premoddingguide suggests using LAV Audio Decoder. I used manual x86 version extracted to steamapps/common/lavfilter and ran install_audio.bat. It fixed the issue!

If it works for Steam Proton in Linux, it's a good bet it'll fix anywhere.

Bumps that come with an answer to a question are always appreciated as far as I'm concerned.
