One approach to learning might be to sit down with a deck of real cards, place three starting cards and just practice stacking cards to total between 21-26. With no opponent you can get used to discarding, card direction and placing Kings, Queens and Jacks. Keep the face card instruction reference next to you and just keep creating stacks. When the "Aha!" moment arrives, look up Ringo and start taking his caps. Be sure you understand the game controls and don't worry about crafting a deck yet. Just keep practicing!

I had this trouble as well. Use the arrow keys to choose things other than 'Discard' and also to choose where to put cards. That's all it is, I think.

Had the same problem as the OP for awhile. Finally figured out you have to press the down arrow to place the next card in a caravan, instead of just hovering over the first card. Felt a bit silly. Regretted previous yelling immediately.

I personally LOVE Caravan. You really just need to figure out the rules. Granted, the game does a crappy job at doing so, it is still a very fun game when you get into it.

This is the message FNV players should take to heart. Once you learn the game, it's really fun, and YOU CAN GET LOTS OF CAPS!. Forget the instructions in the game manual and offical guide. The arrow keys are your friend. Ringo is a pushover. Play him until you figure it out, and then rake in the caps!
I will not be defeated!!!!! :D

Thank you guys for helpful posts. And for those lacking Sympathy...may you suddenly get fleeced by a Robot dressed as a dumb looking person LOL.....

To anyone else having the "grayed out" issue: use the arrow keys to select your card. You can't click on cards, it's not WASD like it is for everything else in the game... Yep, it was decided that this was the only time in the game you'd be using the arrow keys.

You need to use the arrow keys to select cards and where you want to play them. Like others in this thread, I could only see the discard option and I was confused.

I wanted to learn how to play this game - but not if I have to read through 3 pages of comments to do it! :-) The dice game in the Witcher is more my speed.

It's 2015, and I still hate this game. It's not hard. The mechanics of placing cards is just glazed over.

This frustrated the hell out of me for so long, so here's some of the things I was doing wrong:
-As said, on PC, you control cards with arrow keys and not clicking or wasd
-Select a card in your hand by hitting select, then select the spot again by hitting select again (or deselect the card by hitting cancel).
- If you place a card next to another card in the caravan (the default), it's considered to be placing ON that card. You can only do that with Face Cards/Jokers. You want to place it UNDER the previous card in the caravan instead for cards 2-10 (i.e. by pushing down on PC).

There really should have been better in-game instructions for that lol

I've been playing this game for 5 ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ years and I still can't figure out this ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ card game.

♥♥♥♥ whoever decided 2 achievements had to be tied to this ♥♥♥♥.

It's blackjack with the face cards doing additional stuff. It's about as complex as, for example, pazaak.

The loud sound you just heard was my facepalm. I think I hit the back of my head, it was that forceful.

Can someone please move this quote to the first page, mark it red with fiery sparkles and a big sign?
And maybe put whoever designed (or rather did not design) the UI in an illuminated cage right next to it, so we can throw rotten tomatoes?

I was reading instructions for this game desperately trying to figure out what I did wrong, why the rules didn't seem to apply as I understood them.
Turns out it is merely a UI issue...

(In hindsight, considering how inconsistent and illogical the UI is, this isn't really a surprise.)

Anyhow THANK YOU.

[edit]Also: you can add cards to your OPPONENTS caravans! Use the arrow keys when placing cards. Damn, that explains soo much.

The whole game is so ridiculously complicated, I can't even be arsed with it. They can shove their caps up their ass - In the meantime, I got Deathclaws to hunt. :roar:
