Best Sniper Rifle?
I have the standard sniper rifle and its not quite up to snuff against things like Deathclaws. Should I get the anti material rifle to take them out? Or is there another I should look for? I know there is a unique sniper rifle at the snipers nest location but my lockpick isnt high enough to get it yet.

I do play hardcore. How is the Bozar as a weapon? I never bought one in my past games. 29000 caps is a bit much. Is it worth it? I note it is scoped as a LMG.

Out of the regular scoped rifles, the AMR has the highest damage potential, but it's really a boring and impractical gun to use, especially when playing on hardcore.

Why is it boring and impractical?

It's strong but it fires incredibly slow. I've only used it to snipe deathclaws from areas that are inaccessible to them. You're better off usinging the regular sniper with all the attachments considering that you get a suppressor that allows you to be silent.

That doesn't make the AMR bad at all. Only a crazy person would use that kind of weapon up close. Up close, some of the quick-firing weapons are indeed better. The ammo weighs a lot, but match rounds are some of the best out there - increased damage by 15% and reduced spread with no downsides. The .45-70 SWC has a HUGE maintenance multiplier of x3, making it rather impractical, and even so it's only 5% better than match rounds.

If you are having real issues with weight and you happen to be playing on hardcore, then yes, leave the AMR at home. Otherwise, you're just missing out on one very fun way to instagib deathclaws and everything else the game has to offer.

The high Strength requirement also makes it a bit terrible, 8 w/ W Handling. Points much better spent on Intelligence or even Luck.
"Even luck"? It's the most important stat in the game. But anyway, if you are a power gamer you can max every skill starting with an int of about 3. Intelligence offers very little reward outside of roleplaying because there are so many skill books in the game by now. Strength on the other hand always lets you carry more per point. My last character started with an int of 3 and has 10 str, luck, agi and end, and the 6 per you need for better criticals.

Anyway the AMR does a lot of crit damage, so critting (by sniping, for example) is a big part of the strategy. It was made to vaporize anything at longe range. It doesn't matter that it's slow-firing when your targets will never, ever reach you. Personally I only use it with match or explosive rounds, and it's an absolute beast.

Here's a comparison of some of the top rifles:

Christine's CoS silencer rifle: 62 dam, 62 crit dam.
AMR: 110 dam, 110 crit dam
YCS/186: 140 dam, 70 crit dam

The YCS is in many ways a more practical weapon than the AMR, but as you can see it does less crit damage. There are overcharged MFCs for the YCS and explosive and match rounds for the AMR, and overall the two weapons are close.

There is no doubt in my mind that the AMR and the YCS are the two top sniper rifles if you're going for one shot one kill. Whether you prefer one or the other mostly has to do with your guns/energy weapons expertise and style.

Christine's CoS silencer rifle is NOT the top sniper rifle, but it is a beast of a stealth weapon that can easily be used up close as well.

If you have Dead Money, the Holorifle is better than the AMR and is on par with the Gauss Rifle, but still performs better due to the faster firing rate, one mfc per shot and more shots untill reload. Excluding EW, the Gobi rifle does the most dmg of the "normal" sniper rifles with sneak attacks (which is how you should be using it most of the time) due to it's higher crit dmg (among other benefits) compared to Christine's which has higher crit multiplier, but sneak attacks are crits anyway.

I jusr got the gobi rifle but didnt have much of a chance to use it quite yet, I was clearing valut 3 after I got it using a 12.7 pistol. I think im going to get the AMR just for ♥♥♥♥♥ and drins to see what a diff it makes. It isnt that costly. Anyway I love scoped weps. I did notice the Gobi dosnt appear to float the sight as much as the sniper rifle. Thats a good thang.

The Holorifle is excellent. Should have mentioned it before. I'm not really sure if it's "better" than the YCS and AMR. It handles better and is more economical, but it does a bit less damage per shot.

By the way, you can get some absurd kills with Christine's CoS sniper rifle because it doesn't actually alert the target even if you shoot them, so you can just keep getting sneak crits. I was able to down the Legendary Bloatfly very quickly like that. Felt almost like I was cheating.

The Holorifle with max charge rounds does more damage per shot than any weapon in Guns.

Let me tell you guys about [Golf Club], [Golf Club] is the best sniper rifle I have ever seen! when I want to go take on 3 or 4 Alpha Deathclaws with one ricocheting golfball, I turn to my trusty [Golf Club]. I mean, I cant beleive this weapon is still in the game! It is so overpowered. If I was level 1 with nothing but the [Golf Club], I would still be able to beat the game without any additional items, healers, or companions. I dont know why people do not use the [Golf Club] more often. Maybe due to the fact that the [Golf Club] is jjust to strong and that sometimes the [Golf Club] can make the game too easy or less fun.

@Daynov: True, but only because max charge ammo adds a ridiculous 50% extra damage.

As far as I can tell, the most powerful "guns" sniper rifle is still the AMR, and the most powerful "energy weapons" sniper rifle is the YCS/186.

Can Someone tell me where to finda scope for my Hunting Rifle?
Daynov May 14, 2013 @ 12:18pm
Sure, from a pure dmg perspective. Although I'd still take the Holorifle over them for its other benefits that imo, make it the better weapon overall.

CHRISTINES SNIPER RIFLE!!
~This is hands down the best weapon in any DLC in my GenX gaming history.
~Ironic 1.0= The Burning Mans 45. Handgun "a light in the darkness" or something like that
is the best Pistol non snipe imo.. It's been over 10+ years and i still remember these firmly.

*****OLD POST APOLOGY~ Sorry guys, i didn't know this was a old thread. I was researching
Snipers for VNV ffor my wife who is on 1st playthrough & saw this...

Most people i come across & we discuss FNV= Christines SNiper is always in top 3.
I think i used ANti Material later in the game but then again i put over 1000 hours into my 1 playthrough. 500 of those hours were in OLD WORLD BLUES..
What a fun & rewarding area to do ammo & loot farming circles around the map..

This game needs a remaster from a new studios called "Old School Obsidian devs"
