Why is it boring and impractical?
It's strong but it fires incredibly slow. I've only used it to snipe deathclaws from areas that are inaccessible to them. You're better off usinging the regular sniper with all the attachments considering that you get a suppressor that allows you to be silent.
If you are having real issues with weight and you happen to be playing on hardcore, then yes, leave the AMR at home. Otherwise, you're just missing out on one very fun way to instagib deathclaws and everything else the game has to offer.
"Even luck"? It's the most important stat in the game. But anyway, if you are a power gamer you can max every skill starting with an int of about 3. Intelligence offers very little reward outside of roleplaying because there are so many skill books in the game by now. Strength on the other hand always lets you carry more per point. My last character started with an int of 3 and has 10 str, luck, agi and end, and the 6 per you need for better criticals.
Anyway the AMR does a lot of crit damage, so critting (by sniping, for example) is a big part of the strategy. It was made to vaporize anything at longe range. It doesn't matter that it's slow-firing when your targets will never, ever reach you. Personally I only use it with match or explosive rounds, and it's an absolute beast.
Here's a comparison of some of the top rifles:
Christine's CoS silencer rifle: 62 dam, 62 crit dam.
AMR: 110 dam, 110 crit dam
YCS/186: 140 dam, 70 crit dam
The YCS is in many ways a more practical weapon than the AMR, but as you can see it does less crit damage. There are overcharged MFCs for the YCS and explosive and match rounds for the AMR, and overall the two weapons are close.
There is no doubt in my mind that the AMR and the YCS are the two top sniper rifles if you're going for one shot one kill. Whether you prefer one or the other mostly has to do with your guns/energy weapons expertise and style.
Christine's CoS silencer rifle is NOT the top sniper rifle, but it is a beast of a stealth weapon that can easily be used up close as well.
By the way, you can get some absurd kills with Christine's CoS sniper rifle because it doesn't actually alert the target even if you shoot them, so you can just keep getting sneak crits. I was able to down the Legendary Bloatfly very quickly like that. Felt almost like I was cheating.
As far as I can tell, the most powerful "guns" sniper rifle is still the AMR, and the most powerful "energy weapons" sniper rifle is the YCS/186.

~This is hands down the best weapon in any DLC in my GenX gaming history.
~Ironic 1.0= The Burning Mans 45. Handgun "a light in the darkness" or something like that
is the best Pistol non snipe imo.. It's been over 10+ years and i still remember these firmly.
*****OLD POST APOLOGY~ Sorry guys, i didn't know this was a old thread. I was researching
Snipers for VNV ffor my wife who is on 1st playthrough & saw this...
Most people i come across & we discuss FNV= Christines SNiper is always in top 3.
I think i used ANti Material later in the game but then again i put over 1000 hours into my 1 playthrough. 500 of those hours were in OLD WORLD BLUES..
What a fun & rewarding area to do ammo & loot farming circles around the map..
This game needs a remaster from a new studios called "Old School Obsidian devs"
