Resolution problem, please help
I've changed my monitor and it now has a native res of 1360 x 763. All of my current favrit games are easily modified from the start menu, but not so FNV. I contacted Bethesda's robots, and their advice was to modify the res from the local files, but there are four different configuration files and the only res figures are single and not a pair as normal. I've played about with all of them, for hours it seems, and whilst it seems to affect the display slightly, not enough on the vertical to show my HUD! Any help please?

"Resolution: This determines the width and height of the game image displayed on your screen - for example 1280x1024 is 1,280 pixels wide by 1,024 pixels high. The higher the resolution, the more detailed the image will appear on your screen because there are more pixels showing, but the more power it takes to display it. The list of available resolutions shown is limited firstly by the maximum possible for your monitor and graphics card together, as well as what you have selected under the Aspect Ratio setting above. The number of resolutions shown is also affect by whether you've ticked the 'Show All Resolutions' option in the lower right of the screen. Your choice of resolution alone can have a major impact on performance, so if necessary lower it if nothing else works to improve your average FPS. You can also set custom resolutions - see the iSize W and iSize H settings under the Advanced Tweaking section. Note: if you have a widescreen monitor, Fallout 3 has native support for all widescreen resolutions, however there are some minor glitches/issues; you can find a detailed report regarding Fallout 3's widescreen support here. If certain screen elements are not correctly in view at your chosen aspect ratio and resolution, you should also refer to the fDefaultWorldFOV, fPipboy1stPersonFOV and fRenderedTerminalFOV .ini variables in the Advanced Tweaking section."

There are more variable you can alter , including adjustment of the HUD location on the screen.

Modify the iSizeH and iSizeW variables.

Eg; iSizeH=763 iSizeW=1360 (Are you sure it's not 1366x768?)

Thanx guys, excellent advice! According to my Nvidia control panel, the screen's native res is 1360 x 768(correction, no glasses :) Also, I have checked the screen manual and it offers a large table of 42 various resolution options when connected to a PC, all the way from 640 x 350 upwards, with 1920 x 1200 as the max it will support. It's a 26 inch LCD TV. Will endeavour to follow your advice and hope for a satisfactory outcome. :)

Ok, I've tried to access these ini files using NwptRaisins suggestion and the search term listed in bobczes linked guide page, for FNV. Neither are working for me. I'm on Windows XP service pack 3, if that makes any difference.

Have you tried doing the same with the following file?
Steam\SteamApps\common\fallout new vegas\Fallout_default.ini

Just tried that JDC and again it says it can't find such a file.

You can't find the file?

On XP it should be...
C:\Documents and Settings\<user name>\My Documents\My Games\FalloutNV\FalloutPrefs.ini

You may have to turn off 'read only'.
Open it up and search for the text "iSize" (without the quotes)
You should find iSize W= and iSize H= on the line below it.

Thanx JDC, it was the C:\Documents and Settings that did the trick. Now I've altered those figures, it just remains to see if that's done the trick. :)

Well, I'm perplexed! I've tried the correct res figures, no HUD. I've tried various other figures including 800 x 600 and the max 1920 x 1200, just to se the extremes. Again, I can get slight differences but no HUD. I don't understand it, but it looks as though I may have to switch monitors just to finish FNV. Why on earth didn't they just provide what all other game developers have, namely a res adjustment in the main graphics/display menu!?! I mean, it's not even that old a game. I n case it gives anyone a light bulb moment, on all the tried res settings, the characters are always tall and thin.

Perhaps try using the launcher to set the game to a res that's the correct aspect ratio for your screen, then running the game, then quitting, then changing the res in the ini if the launcher doesn't have your res as an option.

The only relevant thing I can do from the Launcher is to check the box for a 640 x 480 res, and that makes the screen too wide and not tall enough! In the local files from Steam, there are several ini configuration files for various settings from low to V high, that contain a single res figure. Maybe I have to adjust all them as well as the main ini file? I could spend far too many hours playing about with all the various options, I'm thinking it's gonna be quicker just going back to my old monitor.

Use windowed mode. It supports more resolutions, IIRC.

...He doesn't need to do any of that, just change your aspect ratio to the widest and it'l give you higher resolution options.
