Down near the bottom of the page is a section entitled "Heist of the Centuries" with a handy pip-boy map of the vault area. You can clearly see the entrance (elevator) and the quest marker for the vault door. Hope this helps, and I don't mind saying that this page proves me a bit of a mistaken liar.
When you go down the elevator the first time you can actually see the vault right in front of you through the glass: it's just blocked by a force field, this is why you must take the long way.
When you arrive at the vault and look around a bit, you can actually see the red lights where the escape elevator should be to help you with the orientation.
If you just run, you don't even have to care about miffing off security holograms as you'll be around the corner before they start shooting... XD
