Also, New Vegas is all about story, decisions, consequences, and very little about exploration and combat (killing anything indiscriminately can earn you severe punishments from the story, denying more and more content).
People who are TES players are usually advised to play FO3 because it is literally an Elder Scrolls game with guns.
New Vegas is an old-school cRPG, made by the people who created, for example, Pillars of Eternity or Neverwinter Nights 2. It can be turned Elder Scrolls-y with combat mods though.
You should play them in order of release, as they tie in with each other and the final DLC, Lonesome Road ties the story together.
Dead Money is the most contentious release. Its basically a survival horror game inside your RPG.

Old World Blues is another contentious one as it brings back a lot of ridiculous humor from Fallout 2. The whole thing is a 50s sci fi comedy spoof.
