CD-Key not working.

I purchased Fallout New Vegas Ultimate Edition brand new at a Gamestop many years ago. At the time, I had no interest in steam and did not want it on my computer, so after installing the game( and steam) I uninstalled both and played a cracked version instead.

Anyway I've since changed my mind about steam, and have several games for it. I felt like playing this game, so I decided to install my actual copy of it. After entering the cd-key,
I get a duplicate product code error. It says the key has already been used and is thus invalid.

I clicked the retrieve account button, because even if I did register steam before under a different user name, the e-mail associated with the account would be the same. Yet, I get no e-mail concerning the issue either in my inbox or spam folder.

Is there anything I can do so that I can install and play from my actual hardcopy?

Contact Steam support. Although if you cannot show a proof of purchase, don't even try. And even with it it's a slim chance.
On the other hand on sales the game is like 10 USD.
