Where can you get ammo?

Pretty much everywhere.

Well, I'm at the start of the game (Goodsprings) and have 6 bullets left. Don't know where to find more.

You can buy, make, or simply find them at any random place. Sell other useless things for ammo, make ammo for a specific gun by breaking down ammo for another type which you won't use, and just search every container wherever you go.

You get a varmint rifle along with a bunch of ammo for free from Sunny Smiles, she will give you ammo another time as well if you continue her quest.

You can find more ammo for the varmint rifle if you look closely in the rubble around the water tank across from the saloon.

Beyond that, talk to merchants, search containers, loot enemies, and craft your own ammo.

There is a multitude or ways to obtain ammo in Fallout. And stated by Insfor, you can buy, and also craft your own rounds, however, this maybe troubling and hard to do for some starters.



Talk to wandering traders, and in Goodsrpings, Chet will sell the ammo you require. Fallout is about adaption, you may want to consider looking into a different type of weapon, such as the easily obtainable "Single Shotgun" used by the roaming Powder Gangers just South West of Goodsprings.

The start is a bit shaky in the ammo department, that's true. Later Primm and the outpost in the SW corner are decent sources, and even later there will be at least three vendors with over 10k rounds per calibers to satisfy anyone's need to shoot stuff. And if you use energy weapons, the OWB DLC will pretty much give you infinite amounts of cells.

Walk into the hills north of Good Springs. TONS of free ammo to be found in those hills. :-]

once you make it to freeside which is the city to get to the strip (sounds far off but not really) you can find the gun runners who will be your best source of ammo and guns.
energy weapons, vince and van or the brother hood of steel have the best supply.

one more thing, you wont be able to buy/sell stuff because traders are pretty rare in the south mojave plus most of them wont have much ammo to sell or a lot of money to barter wht you.
to sum it up, once you get to the vegas side of the map, things get a lot easier.
