How to easely get 5.56 ammo ?
Hey

I am playing on hardcore with very high difficulty and just obtained the rat slayer. I had to use up a stealth boy to sneak past the giant as rats. Now I need a large ammount of the ammo.

Try Quartermaster Bardon at Hoover Dam.

Buy ammo from the gun runners.

The supply is replenished every 2-4 days
If you wait 5-7 days the sales-bot will have 8k in caps making it easy to sell items to buy the ammo you desire.

5.56mm is probably the most common ammo type in the entire game.

Even in Hardcore?
I'm genuinely asking because I've never played FoNV on HC.

Hardcore mode has no effect on rarity of items.

The term Hardcore is slightly misleading.

Its not more difficult per se, just adds a bit more micro and prevents stimpak chugging.

You know that most NCR troopers carry 5.56mm ammo so you can liberate it from their corpses.

If you can't find 5.56mm then use .223 (Same round, .223 is just the "civilian" version of it). Off the top of my head I don't remember if merchants had 5.56mm/.223 as surplus ammo in the Misc section.

Yes. Even in Hardcore. I'm doing a Hardcore run right now and I've never ran out of 5.56mm's for my Ratslayer, Ever. I usually buy them from every vendor that I know of... Vendotron, Chet (Goodsprings), Joe Cobb (Novac).

Most weapon vendors will often have some available, boxes of surplus 5.56 (250 rounds per box!) are quite commonly available in Goodsprings, Primm and Novac, .223 ammo is commonly sold, and in large quantities by by Alexander at the 188, the Vendortron at Gun Runners, Contreras at Camp Mccaran and travelling merchants.
Vendortron also offers rifle powder and primers which can be used to make your own ammo.

A one off batch of 72 5.56mm AP rounds can be got as a reward for a very simple quest given by Ranger Jackson at the Mojave Outpost.

As already mentioned, most NCR troops will carry some, and as Powder Gangers often carry varmint rifles they often have some too.

You can get them in every shop. Even many supposedly exclusive food stores sell 5.56mm.

That's based on player level, not time.

Boxes in misc section exist for both Surplus and .223 types of rounds, but the .223 one is less common than and comes with less individual rounds compared to Surplus.

The .223 is overall better than the Surplus, at least in terms of not breaking the weapon apart. Less damage, but sneak headshots kind of overrule that.

yep, 5.56 is the most common ammo in the game.
You can loot it everywhere.
You can buy it everywhre.

anyway...

Very early-game ammo sellers:
Goodsprings, Chet dude.
Primm, Nash, the oldest man around.
NCR Correctional. the dude at cell B. Pay 100 caps to enter,np, loot is much more.
Mojave Outpost. The ugly girl at the bar.

For later, most of the NV solid sellers are in the E/NE area .. so it's easy to make a tour:
188. Alexander and the NCR's lady soldier.
Novac. Cliff. Talk first to the old lady at the hotel, to get discount.
Gun Runners. Best seller in NV.
Crimson Caravan. Blake, the guy at the kiosk.
Freeside. Mick and Ralph. Ask for the special stock. SIlver Rush, too, but for energy stuff only.
Camp McCarran. Contreras dude. Take care, he sucks...
Hoover Dam. Brandon idiot, at the basement... NCR fame / 50 speech, required.

Also random travelling merchants use to be found in these locations:
Mojave Outpost.
188.
Crimson Caravan gates.
Novac.
