Unable to find INI file
After doing finger-breaking amounts of research and trying different methods, my INI file is still "missing".

I have tried reinstalling the game, changing the INI files so they are not Read-Only, running it in Windows 7 compatablility mode, running as an administator and verifying my game cache. I have also tried running it with and without NVSE although from what I've read it shouldn't make a difference. Nothing as worked so far and the most recent discussion on this problem is from nearly a year ago.

I run Windows 8 with a GTX780M if it helps.

What misses the INI file? They are normally located in Documents\My Games\falloutnv

I have the INI file in both that location and in D:/Steam/steamapps/common/Fallout New Vegas. I have tried having the INI in one of the locations or both and neither worked.

Should have been more specific, whenever the launcher pops up I get the missing INI file notification.
make sure it is a real .ini not just a txt file. fallout.ini and falloutprefs.ini belong where talgaby said. but it`s strange you get that error since the game simply creates new inis if you launch it

Do you have Wondows set to show file suffixes (ie .exe)? Otherwise you're looking for 'Fallout' and 'FalloutPrefs'.

And check your install directory to ensure that 'Fallout-Default.ini' is there alon with 'Low.ini', 'Med.ini', and 'high.ini'.

They both check out. I have the INI files in the correct location based on the information you are giving me however I am still recieving the same error.

Ah. If Windows 10, then make sure your user has full NTFS permissions on the folder I listed under Documents. If Win7/8.x, then just start Steam client as admin before you launch the game.

Running Windows 8, starting Steam as an admin worked.

Also don't forget to tell the game shotcut in steam NOT to use the cloud. I do believe the INI files are included in the cloud backup so yes, If they're on steam's copy up in the cloud it WILL instantly replace them if deleted.

It won't. What you describe is standard engine behaviour, CLoud or no Cloud. It cannot function without those INI files, so it always checks for them and tries to re-create them if they are missing.

/edit: turns out, i have to play this freakin game in German, because the English version is missing the Launcher exe. Even though I copy & paste the exe downloaded from the internet, it starts and then crashes back to desktop. Pretty sure I played this in English for 9h on release... :(

So I just made a fresh install and finally wanted to play this game. It says "unable to find an ini file, please re-install". Did that 3 times now and yet the same error message pops up. I also did validate game files, which always re-downloads 1 file, but still doesn't work. I checked my folder in the documents and the ini file is there... Any suggestions?

Fellow german here, turns out no matter what you do, to play it in a different language you have to buy the ultimate edition, the standard edition won't run in any other language.

The "unable to find ini file" message pops up, because when you change the game language the "Fallout_default.ini" file gets deleted. You can see the file in the Games Folder when playing in german but switching languages deletes it.

Even when you copy the file into folder, it'll get rid of the pop up but it'll still crash regardless. So either way we are forced to play it in german. The only thing we can get rid of is the low violence filter on the main game.

Whoever reads this in the future, just spend the money on the ultimate Edition:steamthumbsup:

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
