Cowboy AND Grunt?
Should I take both? I can't for the life of me decide on other perks I'd rather take that I don't already have. I've just reached level 12, and I'm looking for a new perk. I don't have Cowboy OR Grunt, but I can get Grunt right now and Cowboy later when I'm at another perk choosing level with no useful perks at that level.

It depends on what weapons you're using, as the two perks cover different selections with almost no overlap. Look up the wiki pages for each perk to see in detail which vanilla weapons are covered.

Well I figured if I get both, all the weapons I use (with exception to things like energy weapons) will get the bonuses...eliminating the need to worry about which weapons I should use and just pick up whatever has the most damage output...

a lot of the really good perks require a high level in a skill. next time you level up you can look at what you cant get yet due to level or skill requirements, just keep going down the list.

That's not the problem or the answer to the question I asked. FFS.

well you said there were not any more useful perks at your level, and i was offering a solution to that.

i dont take any of the perks relating to a set of weapons, so i cant really help with that, sorry.

You certainly could, there's nothing technically stopping you from doing it although they're meant as alternatives. Still it would give youl a lot of firepower and all that.
I wonder if there's a mod to completely remove perks from the game, and make it so you're on the same playing field as other npc's and such.

Depends of your playstyle and if you are roleplaying. The two are very good, cowboy make certain weapons a beast, the brush gun with the cowboy perk is more powerfull than a AMR for example.
Grunt also is a good choice, the LMG even becomes a more powerfull weapon than already is.

My recommendation is having one of them AND a secondary skill like melee or unarmed.
The point is those later two have tons of good perks and believe it or not, sometimes fighting a deathclaw or another powerfull foe with an axe and perks like super slam and piercing strike makes the job more easier than with guns.

Love to kill that deathclaw mother with Old Glory or Knock-Knock. :steamhappy:

Good job hazzamanazz - my style of play too.

That combo is quite good for a knife-using character. Get Blood-Nap, take both of those, kill things fast.

Both are excellent choices individually, each offering a good range of weapons that can carry you from the start of the game to the end.
There isn't a great deal of overlap between the two, but the game is far rom hard enough to put any pressure on your perk choices so if you find yourself wanting to swap between the Grun and Cowboy collections theres no reason not to take both.

Grunt only works for Combat Knife and Chance's Knife, so if you want to benefit from Cowboy as well you can only use those two.

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
