How to disarm a slave collar?

Firstly i went on ED-E's quest and i took him to the hidden valley bunker. While i was there i talked to one of the elders and they asked me to kill an NCR ranger and of course i said no because i have a good rep with them. After that i got kicked out and i have a explosive collar attached. I heard that the higher science skill you have its easier to defuse or whatever. THE QUESTION IS HOW DO I DEFUSE IT! (i bet you the answers really obvious)

Just try to remove it in the inventory.
By the way, if you have good NCR rep, you can just ask the ranger to leave. BoS will still be satisfied.

there are ways to get the NCR ranger to simply go away, the obvious one being speech checks.

you can also steal all his food and vandalize his radio.

But without console commands there is no way to remove a slave collar yourself. would defeat the entire purpose of a slave collar.
