ED-E can be used as a portable bench. So it is more useful than Rex. Apart from that, both are equally useless, although Rex's quest is a less of a headache to complete.

many prefer better perceptions skill ED-E has, but i do like Rex skill he can find all dead target's

and if you add Essential Companions mod, then you will like other companions even more and do them special companion side quest some of them has

The only reason I posted this was because you can only have one humanoid and one non humanoid companion in the game and I was going to try and get Rex as a companion but I don't know if it's worth my time. But anyway thanks

It's worth getting Rex even if you're going to mostly use ED-E, if only so you get an epilogue scene of him getting together with Roxie and having cyber-puppies after Old World Blues.

ED-E is better in my opinion. Also if you found all of ED-Es upgrades in the Lonesome Road DLC than he can repair a weapon for free every 24 hours, and other things, along with being basically a portable bench. Also he can be upgraded with either the BoS or the follower of the apocalypse. I upgraded him with the Followers of the Apocalypse and he shoots MUCH stronger lasers now. He has multiple uses as both an ally and a way of making an ammo when you can't get to a bench.

Beepy wins as eyebot does alot more than brain dog.

Also I perfer not to see the inside organs of my pets when looking at them and seems to make little sense you'd leave the brain cartridge exposed like that.

I only used Rex during his quest. Even that was too much. Aside from Big Horners he's next to useless. Usually had him wait somewhere until I cleared an area/mine/cave cause more often than not he just got in the way.

Yeah ED-E and Boone are my combination of companions. They were so good more often than not they got to the enemy before i did.

The Lonesome Road version of ED-E is quite goofy, but I like it. The vanilla version, not so much. Rex just looks... off... to me. The exposed brain coupled with the ugly animations for dogs is too far down the uncanny valley for me.

ED-E after lonesome Road can repair your weapon get you ammo (energy mostly)
function as a bench, and ammo bench. and increases your energy weapon damage.

Rex generally runs into a mob and gets killed.

If you have the Lonesome Road DLC ED-E is better due to the upgrdes in the DLC
