FOV Frustration
i've been going back and forth between the fallout.ini and fallout_default.ini changing the fov to no avail. Everytime I change something and go back in game, the only thing that's changed is the position of my characters arms. I want to see more, but not have my arms look like they're at full extension. What am I doing wrong? I'm tempted to just reinstall the game to start fresh just in case I f*cked up the files somehow.

open the console - type "FOV XX' where XX is your deired FOV, hit enter.

You will see your arms appear to shift position - because the camera is now widened its field of view and you're seeing more of the 1st person model (that is your arms).

Look at the outer edges and see how it appears you've moved backwards a little bit.

I know how to do that, but sorry for not being specific enough. I'm asking for an alternative since I can't unlock achievements if I use the console. I'm not usually one to aim for every achievement, but I've missed every single one so far because of this, plus I just don't want to have to open the console anymore.

Sounds like you're changing the fDefault1stPersonFOV which controls the fov for the first person viewmodels.

The FOV line you want to change is fdefaultfov. It should be 75 by default.

If you're not using any kind of alternate launcher, you'll need to modify the _Default ini in the game directory.

These two will solve the problem, including the weird arm meshes:

Do I just modify the fallout_default.ini and the fallout.ini? It fixed my character model's arms but the fov still looks the same; I have to go into the console and type "fov 100" to get it to look the way I want

FalloutPrefs ini as well. It's in the same folder as Fallout.ini

Well, I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I checked the Fallout.ini and FalloutPrefs.ini and made sure to not mess with the character fov, and the Fallout_default.ini in SteamApps. Everything was set to 100. Either I missed a part and I'll feel like an idiot when someone points out where I screwed up or I'll need to rework my strategy.

Then download the mod Talgaby listed.

All I can say is I've never had to use them. The ini tweaks have always worked for me.
