Crash on startup - any help would be fantastic!
FNV crashes on startup right after a few seconds of the "pre" title page. I've tried a clean install removing all directories both under the Steam common apps as well as in My Games folder. It detects my game and sets for ultra high quality (lowering doesn't seem to help). After a clean install it sometimes goes into a new game, but if I quit that game and try to start the program again it CTDs. I feel like I've tried everything. No mods - well, I modded the game a year ago when I last played, but I haven't modded since... I feel like it could be pulling info from an old mod directory or something... any thoughts?

Are you sure you deleted all files? Because this crash is a telltale sign of a missing master or wrong mod load order.

I've deleted both folders completely. I am thinking that Vortex saves the mod files elsewhere, so perhaps it's saving something... but the crashes happen without Vortex or any mods installed at all, brand new installs... Thanks for replying

Well, that crash can only happen if you have a loose file with a missing dependency, so… if you really deleted the entire New Vegas install folder within Steam, I have no idea why you can even get this crash.
The only other time it happens is if you had an ENB installed, then removed it. You need to manually delete the two FONV config files in My Documents as well then and redo the hardware setup in the launcher's setting menu from scratch.

Thanks very much for replying. No ENB all files and folders are deleted from both locations manually and did the setup again. I've done this multiple times, not exactly sure where the problem happens, but it might have something to do with Vortex, as I seem to be able to open the game and start a new game the first time I install the game only, I *might* have started Vortex after, but the game crashes whether I use vortex to start the game or the Steam start or the launcher in the folder, even with or without compatibility. I'll let you know if I find something else. I freaking love this game, favorite game of all time, itching to play again.

It should not be the answer, but try something other than Vortex once you manage to start the game again.

OK found the problem, just in case someone else comes accross this. My problem was not understanding a function of Vortex. I did a complete clean re-install of the game several times, but the problem was coming after opening Vortex AT ALL. Vortex would automatically install mods I had previously downloaded (that it keeps in the mod folder which is independent of the Fallout NV folders) So even just having the Vortex program open at all would "infect" my game with the conflicting mod. I opened Vortex and disabled all mods, then opened Fallout NV which worked through every means including the launcher NVSE or through Vortex.
Thanks Talgaby for your help!

So further, and less important information: it turned out Vortex was enabling a mod called Wasteland Flora Overhaul - Dead Version. Vortex does not detect a problem with this mod, however it does make the game crash, and seems to be known to the mod developer:

"If the game crashes with Dead Edition on startup, please try using:
https://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/53635/?"
