What's the difference between Light, Medium, and Heavy Armor?

I got this mod that adds better-looking power armor, even giving Cook Cook his own raider power armor. And when I was looking at BoS power armor and the raider power armor, I noticed that the raider's was medium. What's the difference between them? Other than DT.

The other main difference is how fast you're able to move when wearing the different classes of armor. Light armor = faster, and heavy armor's slower.

it effects sneak as well, and there are obviously perks that take armor rating into account

So If I were to put it on a companion, would those perks not count on them?

Always put the strongest armour you can find on a companion. Just the player is affected with adverse effects and perks.
