Runtime Error
Hi all,

Got a strange problem suddenly arisen in my game, I am in Lonesome Road near the part where you get Rocket's Red Glare and the Laser Detonator. My game has suddenlly started suffering from a noticeable drop in FPS.

Anyway I can play for about a minute before I get the popup window saying :

*****************
MICROSOFT VISUAL C++ RUNTIME LIBRARY

Program:...)\Steam\Steamapps\common\fallout new vegas\FalloutNV.exe

This application has requested the runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.
Please contact the application's support team for more information

*****************

I have tried 3 tips:

1- Running vcredist in the FNV files
2- Downloading Microsoft C++ from the Microsoft site ( I think I got the right thing here but it involved downloading a program called "Visual Studio"?)
3- Adding script extender to the game

I have also searched for related problems but to no avail.

Thanks in advance, beer's on me

A script is doing an invalid call. Visual C++ is just he language the scripting engine's interpreter was written in for the Windows version.

Assuming you do not have any mods, do a file revalidation, since it is the Lonesome Road ESM that is corrupted. If you are lucky. If not, then some script inside the game had a very nasty hiccup and you cannot do anything about it beyond starting a new character.

Just to clarify, do you mean to verify the integrity of game files? I just did this and it said there was one file missing which would then be reaquired.

Outside this I'm not sure how to do a file revalidation, could you give me some pointers?

And yeah no mods are installed, just playing the vanilla game.

One file always fails teh verification, it is a failsafe.

Then it seems a script got borked. Sadly, it can happen. :(

So I started the game from scratch but things are much worse, I'll try to keep the description brief:

I reinstalled it and I'm getting slightly lower FPS, enough that it slightly affects the gameplay. However this is not the worst part. Now the scripts fail to run in sequence. So in the start I have to press "escape" to bring up the menu then again to return to the game in order for the next dialogue line to run. Obviously in the start Doc Mitchell says a few blocks of dialogue but he'll only say one at a time, I have to press esc to prompt the next line.

My game is butchered but I didn't do anything to mod/change it, what could you recommend?

A manual wipe and a fresh reinstall. Essentially, a fresh start.
And hope the dependencies are actually working. Otherwise, you have a system-wide issue. Although the chances for that are slim.

I wiped all the data from my PC which did initially fix it. I'm trying to get the final Lonesome Road achievements so I went there at about level 5 instead. The game ran fine up until the exact same point as previous. The same area, same problem.

I'm not sure what this means, I can't really delete and reinstall anything else anymore so do you have any idea what could be causing it?

Add any of the 4GB extenders or patches for this game. If it crashes at the same sequence with an fps dip, it can be a memory leak.

Fresh save? I have one just before the area.

Pray for me

If you still get the error, I fear that it will indeed be a system-side bug. You may have to forego playing LR until you reinstall your OS eventually. :-|

Good heavens

I'll see what I can do

So the 4gb patch has increased the performance. I still get the runtime error and other random CTD but it doesn't happen within a minute of me starting the game.
I assume I'll need to reinstall the OS like you said?

I don't know if this has any bearing on the issue but my Steam.exe is on my C/ drive but I have my library on a separate I/ drive, could this be influencing this at all?

Not really, I keep the entire Steam on D:\Games.

You may try to download all Visual C++ Runtime libraries from Microsoft:
https://support.microsoft.com/hu-hu/help/2977003/the-latest-supported-visual-c-downloads
Or the all-in-one megapack from MajorGeeks:
http://m.majorgeeks.com/files/details/visual_c_runtime_installer.html

This should replace all existing libraries to rule out a bad call in some DLL somewhere. If it works, you save yourself the trouble of OS reinstall.

Downloaded the bundle from majorgeeks. Is this a dynamic change or will I need to reinstall the game?

Dynamic.
