is the .44 magnum broken?
Everytime I use it in VATS, it rarely seems to hit, even with a %95 hit chance at point blank range, it only hits about 1/10 shots.

It’s a problem with how VATS works from what I can tell. At closer ranges trying to shoot something will be harder because of the third person camera angles, especially if it a a specific body part or weapon, or if the target is moving.
Your best bet is to shoot at the torso. It’s usually effected least by this problem.

At point blank range the V.A.T.S tends to miss. Mainly because the barrel of the gun ends further than the target is standing causing you to shoot past them, but sudden crouches or strafes to the left and right can make it miss aswell.

VATS is a tricky thing, since it still relies on bullet trajectory, it just curves the shot according to hit chance. However, since bullets spawn in front of the gun and you can clip the weapon through the hitbox of a close enemy, your shot will spawn behind them, and thus certainly miss.

I think its the firing animation that's causing the issue if you own Fallout 3 and have FOMM (Fallout Mod Manager) you can fix it by porting the Fallout 3 1hpattackleft.kf files from Fallout - Meshes.bsa not the ones under Characters/_1stperson and using them in New Vegas.
