The ellusive Malcolm Holmes.
I've picked up more than a few sunset caps, and Malcolm has yet to harass me. I thought this was tied to vendors not restocking, so I stood around Chet's shop in Goodsprings for 24 hours. Oddly enough, Chet didn't mind a weirdo just standing around doing nothing for 24 hours, and just swept around my immobile form.

Chet restocked, so one of my problems was solved! But Malcolm, who seems to spawn directly from my rear end most playthroughs, did not appear. Goodsprings star? No Malcolm. Jean Skydiving? No Malcolm. California Drive in? He usually shows up by Primm, but no dice!
Allied technologies office? Quite the hike, but no Malcolm.
Cap counterfeiting shack ? Up to my rear end in cazadore, But Malcolm didn't show! I'd heard he sometimes shows up on that stupid floating platform in the lake, but he wasn't there either!

I haven't tried Helios, as I've avoided shooting or helping humans. I just sell meat to Trudy and roam.

I had read maybe something killed him, and I figured Scorpion Gulch was a likely place he might have tried to find me, so I walked it again, but no corpses.

So I resorted to the vice of scum and villainy, the Tilde key! player.moveto 0010651a Jammed me into the door at Mojave Outpost where Lacey warns me about the Female sniper with the personality of a female dog. (Avoiding the heart filter that protects little Braiden's eyes.)

Malcolm holmes PROBABLY spawns or despawns from this magic door, but I'm SOL. Where the Dell are you, Malcolm Holmes?!

Forgot to mention, Please help me.

U don't need Malcolm Holmes to start the quest, just go to the sunset saspralilla botting plant and talk to festus

Honestly, I was hoping the scorpions got him. I want his hat, but I don't want to shoot him. Guess I'll just keep picking up star caps and hoping.

So your willing to use the tilde key to get to malcolm but not to get his hat ... which is all your after!

:edit ... he has probably already been killed in your game

The moment you get a star cap, a script spawns him in at a far side of the map and he starts running towards you. Like with any character who does this, there is a chance some enemies got him while you did not look in that direction, or he got stuck on level geometry. Or, most likely, fell off the map and is now standing or running in place in the blue hell far below the map.

Yeah, I did the player.moveto thinking I'd solve the big mystery, and it jammed me in a door. Not a huge loss, I can roll back a few saves. He wasn't a corpse though. as to the spawning on the other side of the map, do you have a source for that?

I wasn't going to continue past tilde land, just wanted to solve the mystery. Load back afterwards.

This does say "After speaking with the player, Malcolm Holmes will walk directly to the Mojave Outpost. He will disappear from the game once he arrives there"

Yup, that's my primary source for most info, even with those horrid video ads. Never met him this run through.

Lucked out on the roving trader outfit, geckos got Barton Thorne before he could double cross me, so I had no humans on my stats.

Picked up ED-E and started having him ankle pick the wasteland. Every three days wipe Trudy out of caps, Level up off the cazadores and Giant scorps. Take the bighorner and gecko meat to Trudy.

Plan was to max merchant, then walk the long clockwise perimeter. I know some vipers have the hat, and I was collecting Laser RCW's off fiends who tried to fight the fire ants.

Maybe I shouldn't covet malcolm's sweet, sweet hat. But any info about how he spawns, that kinda stuff, is welcome.

He spawns somewhere close to the center, IIRC. At any rate, if you want to move him to you, it is far easier to just use the teleport command:
prid 10651a moveto player
psychotron666 Nov 23, 2018 @ 6:40am
He likely was killed awhile ago, and his body disappeared which is why you are teleported to the Mojave outpost

He's disabled when he goes to the Mojave Outpost Barracks door. He goes there when you move to a new worldspace or after you've talked to him.

I've read that moving an npc to a player creates a duplicate, rather than move the original NPC.

I'm not trying to cheat, I just wanted to know where and if he died.

I was low level enough that re-rolling wasn't a huge ordeal.

Ol Holmes didn't show up when I picked up the star cap in Goodsprings, even if I waited 24h.

So I went to Jean Skydiving, grabbed that cap, then hit wait for 24h. Worked that time. Sold him all the burnt books I picked up in Goodsprings and cleared his inventory of items, but did not kill him.

Then I followed his tracks. Even if I don't get his hat, I should have a decent guide to Mojave outpost, right? WRONG.

He walks past the ruin of a house on the goodsprings side of the road, then drops out of the map at a rock between Goodsprings Source and Lone Wolf Radio.

Not the ending to this mystery I wanted, but meh. Off to hunt cazadores and Bighorner. At least Barton Thorn was kind enough to give me a Roving Trader outfit, even if I did have to hit F9 many times.

I may or may not have blown sunny's head off after hearing "Hey that's not bad see" for the fifth time. Barton wasn't wearing the right fashion.

Once again, I'm always happy to read a new source on information.
