Also, energy cells are very common and cheap. Don't see why you'd be concerned with wasting ammo.

I have maxed my reputation with the Brotherhood of Steel, gotten 4 of 5 holotapes from the Lonesome Road DLC, and have the Vigilant Recycler perk, maybe I am overeacting about the ammo situation. Thank you for the advice! This has opened my mind about my "ammunition" situation.
Finishing the BoS quest with a positive outcome or reaching good standing with the Legion can also earn you periodic free energy cells. So is finishing OWB, which is energy ammo heaven.
