It's not very good big on roles, and even less big of on the player being allowed to select various roles, with which it decides the outcome of various roles.

I failed a Speech (Charisma) Check in Fallout 4.

Since I found that to be Horse Crap because my character had 10 Charisma and it was only a Yellow colored check, I reloaded the game.

This time I succeeded.

The NPC said the exact same dialogue.

What an RPG!

Back in the days before most of us where ever an idea in or parents’ minds, there was Dungeons and Dragons, a tabletop RPG that defined almost every proper RPG to follow it. You made up a little backstory for your character that would influence your character’s decision and give them certain stats that would synergize well with other people in your party. The DM would create scenarios that your characters have to solve and that would be the story.
In a CRPG there’s a bit less flexibility in making a character because there are only so many stats/perks you can choose from and for the sake of good writing the backstory of your character is somewhat limited. However, due to a level cap your character couldn’t be an absolute god at everything and had certain flaws, ensuring that you still are a character.
Fallout 4 gives you a defined backstory and a very linear set path (tbf all RPGs do this) to follow, so you really can’t be someone other than a former soldier or law school graduate searching for their son.

There's a million directions you can take a character that's "A Soldier Looking for their Son."
That's not the issue.

The Issue is Bethesda only wants to give you one. Maybe one and a half.

Also, your character can max out his stats if you play for a decent amount of time, so it’s like letting your whiny little brother make his DnD character.

Why does everyone say Fallout 4 isn't a RPG when it is?

Fallout 4 is an open world loot-shooter with RPG elements. The main gameplay loop is killing stuff and picking stuff up. Previous games (even Fallout 3) were more focused on expressing your player character in the various ways you interact with the game world - you know, like actual roleplaying?

In a series of rpgs it is the one game with the least rpg elements and thus feels like an fps spinoff much like FO:Tactics was a TB-tactics spinoff.

Fallout 4 has a dialogue wheel and companion romance because Mass Effect did that, Fallout 4 has radiotowers/settlements to conquer because Farcry did that, Fallout 4 has a "shocking story twist" because thats whats trending right now on TV, Fallout 4 focuses on fps gunplay and spectacular action setpieces because thats what the majority of successful game franchises focus on and lastly Fallout 4 has crafting and shackbuilding because survival games are still booming.

Fallout 4 tries to take everything that is popular right now and shove it into one single game with the consequence that every little aspect seems somehow half baked or unfinished.
At the same time this big bucket of stuff is the unique part about Fallout 4 - yes it tries to be everything at once and does not really do any one thing right, but the whole sum of its bits and pieces together form a gmae that apparently many people enjoy.

So i would not call it a bad game per se, but if you are looking for a full fledged rpg you are just not getting enough rpg and a whole lot of stuff you probably could do without.

Many people were expecting Fallout 3/NV +1, the next big one in the series of RPGs, but instead they got a bit of Farcry, a bit of Mass Effect and a bit of The Forest, dressed up as Fallout.

If that is exactly what you are looking for, sure go for it, but i am sure you can understand why people are disappointed to varying degrees.

+1 This. I have everything from all the Elder Scrolls to all the Fallout series ... AND, still find hours of enjoyment by playing different factions and love the different out comes to be had. So whatever you call the game, hay, fine by me......:steammocking:

"Everyone" is not saying it, just the people who understand what makes a game a RPG, along with those who played the original Fallouts. FO4 just doesn't qualify, as many have more than adequately explained upthread.

Bethesda may have bought the Fallout franchise, but they just don't "get it". If you think of the original series as a cake, Bethesda has dug no deeper into it than the icing on the surface.

These two quotes, side by side, illustrate perfectly the difference between the original dev's approach v. the current devs' approach:

“My idea is to explore more of the world and more of the ethics of a postnuclear world, not to make a better plasma gun” – Tim Cain

“Violence is funny! Let’s all just own up to it! Violence done well is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ hilarious. It’s like Itchy and Scratchy or Jackass – now that’s funny!” – Todd Howard
Fallout 4 to me is a videogame finally reaching absolute freedom.
'meaning roleplaying. You're the only boss, able to do whatever you want.

wow ok
talgaby 6 Thg05, 2018 @ 10:20pm
FO4 is about as much of an RPG as Borderlands is. None. Just because you have a skill system and you can answer some dialogues with two-four different ways but with the same outcome, it does not make an RPG.
FO4 is a good open-world looter-shooter with some RPG-like mechanics, but if the RPG-like mechanics would mean a game is an RPG, then Call of Duty is an RPG as well, since it also has the same upgrade mechanics.
Being able to be, to play the role character makes a rpg to me.
I could roleplay a phonebook if I had nothing else.

Fallout 4 doesn't feel like an RPG. Too much emphasis is put upon the main quest. There aren't enough side quests and things don't feel random. It all feels contrived and scripted, and the nature of an open world game is that it should be the opposite.
