Exactly how buggy is this game?
I'm on my second playthrough in Fallout 4 now, and feeling the limits of the game's RPG aspects, so naturally I want to come to this game as it has amazing reviews and is touted as the best in the series and such.

However in the reviews I've read it's rather unstable and crashes a lot, along with stutters and other issues - while I know this can be aleviated with mods, I'd rather not spend money on a broken out of the box product.

Can you play the game without crashing or stuttering to death without mods?

Sometimes. There is a known problem with the Freeside gates. There's also the endless loading screen problem. Saves get corrupted too. I lost a game earlier this month and had to revert to an earlier slot save. Do a search on FNV and bugs for the complete list. Other than that, the game runs fine.

I've never had a crash in an unmodded/lightly modded game.

Likewise for corrupted saves, even waaay back in the day when a ran almost exclusively off quicksaves.

set the graphics to the lowest for the best results
Just use mods... there's no reason not to. It's absolutely a far sight more unstable than Fallout 4. Obsidian only had 18 months to make New Vegas, and they had to deal with the broken ass gamebryo engine Bethesda gave them. Also, get The Strip Open and Freeside Open, because those areas are gimped as hell for the console releases. Save yourself from loading zone hell.

As bug-filled as the bush after a storm.

It's a game published by Bethesda.
It's gonna be buggy no matter what.

I find all problems are fixed by "verify game files" being run from time to time. ALWAYS recovers one corrupted file. That's all I know.

Depends on your hardware, your drivers and other installed and running software, your luck, and the general mood of the engine.
In general, it is highly advised to install the usual stabilisers and the fan patch.

That's just the .ini file. I've uninstalled and reinstalled at least once and done the file verification thing numerous times. The game crashed to desktop twice just last night. The times its' locked up I had to sign out of Windows to close the game. Other times Windows notifies FNV stopped working.
All I wanted to do is build up a character to play Dead Money. Now it's turning into a 'spitting' contest or a game of chicken between me and this game.
