If you don't mind modding the game because you're going to mod it further anyway, the Steam version won't be an issue for you (some hardware setups don't require any stability modding so you can test it mod-free first.)
Still, as it was said, the Steam DRM itself *can* be a cause of instability and incompatibility in games, so, in general, the GOG/Humble DRM-free editions of games tend to be more safer and stable.
Buy either one.
