How does the silent running work?
i've been trying for awhile but can't seem to get how the hell it works exactly I tried the wiki and it's pretty vague too

it's basically the caravan of perks. Is it worth taking? what if i max out sneak instead?

Every time you go into sneak mode, enemies do two checks against your sneak skill, based on their Perception level: one for visual (if they can "see" you" and one for noise ("hear" you). If you did not toggle walk mode while sneaking, you get a penalty for the noise check (meaning, they might not discover you even if they are still looking at you, but if you move, they will instantly find you because of the noise penalty).
With the perk, you remove not the penalty but the "hear" checks altogether.

By the way, the NPC cone of vision is nearly 200°. They can see behind their backs. This is why you get caught sneaking up from behind.

this info is taken from the fnv wiki

silent running
-With this perk, your running no longer factors into a successful sneak attempt.

-If you are a melee or unarmed fighter and rely on sneak attack criticals then this perk goes very well with Travel Light, Implant M-5 and Tunnel Runner allowing you to close the distance quickly while remaining silent so you can achieve a Sneak attack critical.

It means that you can basically run up to an enemy and get a stealth critical hit.

No, no. Basically, you have to crouch walk. before the perk, in order to actually stay silent, you have to crouch and i believe it is shift, to sneak. It makes you crawl at a turtle pace. That is why sometimes as a sneak melee, the baddy will hear you when you get close.
Even when crouched and walking you make noise, this will make your crouch walk as quiet as crouch+shift.

Mostly for melee and unarmed builds. Most useful in NV due to all of the different weapons.

It means that you get no penalties for things like wearing armor, and the AI won't be able to detect you through movement noise, which even sneak itself actually causes. The description was cribbed from older fallout games, but is meaningless in NV, because everything related to sneak is done in 'sneak mode,' which is the crouch.

With this perk, you can steal and murder people as easily in power armor as naked.

No, all it means is that they're always aware of you if you're not sneaking, as you're still loud. They might not be able to SEE you, but they can still HEAR you, and that ability to hear you is how they find you; Silent Running negates that, so you can still sneak up on them.

With silent running, and a stealth boy, you are essentially undetectable until you bump into an NPC. (Any NPC, mind you, in the cell.)

what about guns?

or should i just use a melee/unarmed and hope for the best?
talgaby Aug 14, 2019 @ 1:00am
Guns make a noise, silent running won't negate that.
Funny enough, some melee weapons do too.
However, if you can one-shot-kill someone with no other NPC in the weapon's audio range, then you are good.

To put it simply:
In Fallout 3, you had the Chinese Stealth Armor that gave you a stealthboy invisible field. If you added silent running and Jingwei's shock sword, you could go around a crowded area, kill everyone one by one, and not raise suspicion at all.

i know what i'm doing for fallout 3 lol

yeah been experimenting and stealth is pretty op'd. More than any weapon b/c of the dumb crit multipliers (stealth bonus + bonus stealth stat on weapons + crit chance + bonus crit chance + guns/energy/explosives/melee/unarmed weapon stat skill bonus + other bonuses). Basically 1 shot anything or anyone that doesn't have a helmet or some form of head armor.

had to sacrifice all my strength, endurance, and some pts on perception to max out all other S.P.E.C.I.A.L. stats at the start but by god VATS doesn't do ♥♥♥♥ for accuracy with no strength but without it stealth kills can kill in one shot.
