Why is my New Vegas not running smoothly?
When I'm on the main menu the cursor feels sloppy and is faster than normal. In-game my FPS is usually around a steady 75 with some drops, but despite that the game has somewhat of an annoying stutter/lag, it just doesn't feel smooth or consistent. My character also moves a bit too fast for some reason even though the speedmult options are normal. I play New Vegas having a GTX 1070 and i7-7700HQ so it's more than capable of running it. I used to play it on an older laptop on ultra settings perfectly with no issues whatsoever, smooth as can be. Ever since I upgraded my specs it runs weird. I'm also not running any mods. I tried NVSR in the past but I don't think it made any difference. Any idea why this is happening and how to stop it?

For the cursor issue, go to MyDocuments/MyGames/FalloutNV and go to the Fallout ini put these lines of code under [Controls]:

fForegroundMouseAccelBase=0
fForegroundMouseAccelTop=0
fForegroundMouseBase=0
fForegroundMouseMult=0

It's been explained countless times here, don't exceed 60fps with Gamebryo games. Limit it to 59.

EDITED BECAUSE NECRO

The game breaks down over 60 fps. The scripting engine will have difficulties calculating its stuff, introducing massive stutter. The physics engine cannot keep itself steady and you will see items, actors, even props fall through the world and getting lost forever.

Simply put, you have too high framerate. Limit it to 59 and the problems will stop.

Wow, thanks for this. I limited my FPS to 59 and the game is incredibly smooth now. Sorry for the necromancy, but this is absolutely worth bumping.

As Vex said, this thread is long outdated, and that video is less than useless compared to the actual fixes that now exist.

The Performance Guide[performance.moddinglinked.com] is the better choice for both getting the game to run smoothly, and at whatever FPS you want.

Edit the post and replace the outdated trash with something up to date.

Steam should be locking this soon anyway. I can't believe that people still somehow dredge up these old posts.

The problem with that is newbies still search for solutions, and find them in locked threads, then we have to tell them to use vivanewvegas when they inevitably make a new thread.

Fair. At least GP marked most of those old videos as obsolete, finally a step in the right direction from that clown.

I never watched a video. I simply limited my fps to 59 as suggested and the game runs smooth.

Good. Case closed.

Thread served it's purpose well, and in fact is serving again, right now, in 2025.

Thanks Vex Hilarius from 2019! 😂
