That's why you should use both.

For real though, I always liked the pistol more.

A Light Shining in Darkness. Best pistol in the game.

Any other use for .45 auto is a waste, since there are much better SMGs to use in its place.
.45 auto pistol is better, the .45 SMG just wastes ammo and there are better weapons than it.

The Thompson eats through the ammo. It has great damage, but not a gun for general combat, more like for "oh shit!" situations. Which this game mostly lacks.
The M1911 is a better place for that ammo, especially Graham's unique one.

45 pistol - Better control, damage and has a silencer. Best for sneak attacks.

45 submachine gun - Good dps. Best for brawling if you have high HP and decent armor.

The pistol is much more pratical since .45 ammo isn't very common. The submachine gun is a good panic weapon though.

Along with Ranger Sequoia i'd say. I use them both for my pistols only build and they fit each other really well.

Isn't very common?! o.0 It is the second most abundant ammo type after 5.56. I had a save file where I used my ridiculous amounts of money to hoard the biggest arsenal to my safehouse and I had over half million rounds of .45 at one point, before I started to break it down to create high-pressure rounds.

Yeah, pretty much any merchant will have at least a few dozen rounds of it. Not to mention once you reach red rock canyon or the dam, you'll be able to purchase several hundred or more rounds of .45. I love the .45 smg, specially during something like bleed me dry where you'll typically run into groups of creatures. With handloaded ammo the thing is a beast.
