Theory: Fallout NV for free from steam?
Fallout New Vegas is one of my favorite games ever.
Playing with mods, i noticed that if you run the game with NVSE (New Vegas Script Extender) it doesn't open the Steam API so Steam doesn't know that you're running it.
The steam API checks if you have actually got the license for the game.

So, theoretically, you should be able to:
1. Buy the game from Steam
2. Download the game on your computer
3. Ask for a refund
4. Install NVSE and run the game without having the Steam license

The same thing should work for Fallout 3 too using FOSE.

Do you think that it could be possible?

(Sorry for my bad english, i'm italian :happycthulhu: )

Whether it works or not, you shouldn't be posting about it on Steam forums. They're really jewey about these kinds of things.

no, thats not how it works. try it by uninstalling(or deleting the exe) your game and then you'll see. no i have not tryed it (why would i?) and they do need steam licence to work(you'll lose the licence when you get a refund) and it only works on steam version. And i think it still uses the exe(games) anyway. so in short no.

Do you mean the original exe game file? But NVSE is a separate exe (?)
However i used to play Fallout 3 with FOSE and i'm 100% sure that my steam status remained "Online" and not "Playing X"

NVSE still launches the Fallout.exe file so it's not going to work, and both the launcher and the executable are tied to the steam api, so unless you want to pirate the game with a crack or bypass, which is against steam guidelines both talking about and mentioning it, it won't work.

Yeah you're right, the DLCs are just .esm and .bsa files. But can you refund DLCs too?

If the game has less than 2 hours, and you've owned it for less than 2 weeks then go for it, otherwise, no.

That's not how it works, and you learn that even in No Child Left Behind America.

That means you can't launch the game without Steam.

Ok thanks everyone

There are quite a few games on Steam which are actually DRM-free and you can technically do that. But as it was, New Vegas is not one of them. I would be very surprised if Bethesda Softworks ever released a game now that doesn't have any DRM at all.
