Very long and easy to screw up, but I did it and now I get a smooth 60 on my garbage PC.
To be entirely clear: I already installed NVSR and NVAC and all that long ago, and for many hours of gameplay things were running just fine. The lag spikes are an entirely new development the game did not have before, I am not talking about the standard problems most people are talking about and suggesting solutions for, I already took care of that stuff.
Yesterday I started the game up after changing nothing, and suddenly the game takes longer to start and gets huge lag spikes it never had before. Between spikes it runs as smooth as ever, but it now just randomly comes to a near complete stop briefly for two or three seconds at most at random times, though turning seems to be the most consistent trigger. Also it always takes longer than usual to load between map trasitions, along with even the music hanging/looping until the next area is ready to go.
Anyway, because it ran fine for the last few weeks, something must have changed, but I don't know what. I vaguely remember reading something about save files eventually harming performance after enough play time somehow, but I can't seem to find anything about it now. Otherwise, anybody have any idea what would suddenly cause lag spikes in an otherwise long-time stable game out of nowhere?
I'm omitting system specs because it already ran smoothly for a long time, so it can't be my hardware that's the issue, as it hasn't changed. And if it were a quiet Windows 10 update or something causing it, I'd think I'd be finding more complaints like this by now, so I doubt that's it.
I upgraded my gpu and my save game lagged enough to me feel ill. I started a new game (applied settings from geforce experience) and it works fine with no lag.
A new game start lag?
The game need to run at 60 fps?
