[1.3] Vanilla Animals Expanded — Ice Sheet

Description
From 1.4 on, these animal modules are deprecated and are now part of Vanilla Animals Expanded

What this mod series was certainly lacking is some Ice Sheet animals. Adding them was quite difficult as the biome itself hardly supports any plant life - and whilst I can feel free to add animals, they need to be able to sustain themselves. Additionally, I needed to make sure that the Sea Ice biome gets enough treatment to be unique, whilst still being extremely difficult to play in. With this mod you are able to fend off the flocks of penguins and hunt walruses for their precious tusks! Not only that, as penguins will periodically dig for fish, so if you’re particularly unlucky, you can scavenge their leftovers!

Vanilla Animals Expanded is a modular mod. It means it will come out in several modules allowing people to subscribe to only the animals they want in the game. This part is the Ice Sheet biome expansion. It adds 3 new animals that will spawn in the Ice Sheet, but some of them also spawn in other biomes. They have vanilla artwork, sounds and balancing.

Vanilla Animals Expanded: Ice Sheet adds following animals to the base game:

There shouldn’t be any incompatibilities or issues, but in case anything pops up, report issues in the comments.

Q: Do the animals spawn randomly in biomes?
A: Yes, all these animals are guaranteed to spawn in Ice Sheet biome, with some of them also spawning in other biomes.

Q: I keep seeing a new food item called fish.
A: Since penguins are carnivore and Ice Sheet biome is devoid of smaller animals than them, penguins periodically dig the ground for fish. There is currently no other way to obtain fish than by having penguins dig them out when hungry.

Q: Is X a pack animal?
A: None of the animals in this mod are pack animals.

Q: Why is X animal white?
A: It’s only white as a texture, but ingame, code applies colour to it. It’s a little trick that mod authors do to have a bit more control over how an animal looks.

Q: Can I suggest a feature?
A: Absolutely, leave a comment down below!

Q: Will you keep updating the mod with new animals?
A: No. I will focus on other modules, adding different animals for different biomes, but this workshop submission is completed.

Q: Why is your mod special?
A: I am a vanilla player. Anything that doesn't suit vanilla game makes me cringe and I stay away from it. I did however find the game lacking after some time, therefore I've created these animals to be as accurate and as close to vanilla graphics style as possible. What is special? The best part is - nothing in this mod is special at all. Nothing will make you go "Oh that's unusual", because the whole purpose of this mod is to blend into the existing game.

Q: Is this mod save game compatible?
A: Yes, you can add it and remove it whenever you like.

Q: Can you add /this/ animal?
A: Chances are it’s probably already in the works as part of another biome. Please, stay vigilant and be patient. I’m just a human.

Q: CE compatible?
A: It will be soon, with a following mod being a patch for it: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1824112352&searchtext=animal+expanded

I love walruses, but hate walrus death. XS So conflicting.

Ok. I see.
It’s just, as a biologist, I thought it was implausible.

Walrus is already the most efficient animal in Rimworld, it yields the most skin, meat and money for what it requires to tame and breed. There’s biology, and then there’s Rimworld game balancing.

Any biologist will tell you that walruses and seals are the most intelligent species in nature and very easily trained. You can look videos in youtube what they can do when trained.
It so strange that they can't be trained to haul and rescue (at least the walrus) in your mod.

And penguins are also very very smart:laughing_yeti:

@Argonant I have issue with that as well. One way of solving that I've found is putting an egg laying box in a warm area and allow the penguins access. That way when they are ready to lay their eggs they'll go to the box and place them there.

Honestly, though, I feel like Penguins should place their eggs in their inventory or something (if they have one) to mimic how real penguins always have their eggs with them when traveling. Far as I've noticed, eggs don't seem to become ruined by temperature if they are in someone's inventory until they are dropped no matter how cold or hot the environment is. That, or penguins could get a nest creating mechanic where they create something similar to a storage box where only eggs are placed inside the nest, keeping them warm till hatching. Maybe have it so they make the nests at 80% egg development and then have the nest break upon the egg hatching or being removed.

I realized that I was missing polar bears due to the fact that I've never played ice sheet

Like... the ones that are in the game...?

No. Also, there is no need
