From someone who barely touched SRPGs (being the only ones Pokemon Conquest and Devil Survivor series), the game hits hard due to how many possible strats can be used just on one map. At first sight, the mechanics and gameplay seemed complex, as if it was one of those old-school RPGs where you have to take notes every time you want to compare equipment, stats, optimize classes, and so on. However, upon playing more and reading guides -and I really mean LOTS of guides-, the flow of the game became more stable.

Starting with the plot, it features a simple yet attracting characters and dialogues. I only got up to chapter 10 at the time I'm writing this review, but so far I'm enjoying everything. Each of the main cast characters are unique, and most of the time the dialogues turns into comedy/slapstick situations, which I absolutely love. While this is a big positive point for me, what really hooked me into it was the next part: the gameplay.

The game rewards you for being patient. The game rewards you for leveling classes, even if they seem useless, and killing monsters -by reducing their mana cost at the Dark Assembly, place where you can create new characters. There are 2 main 'battle', if you can call it like that, scenes: gates, where you can either do main story or another unlockable, and the maps and enemies are pretty much the same, and Item World, a place where the maps and enemies changes constantly, but where you can upgrade your weapons/gear/items. Why did I said I liked the gameplay? Well, the Item World is just addicting. While you upgrade stuff, you also get more items in the way, level up your characters and even gather specialists, which basically are another upgrade to equipment -but that can be moved. It must be warned that Item World takes way too much time, and the grind scene in this game is real. However, the rewards are pretty satisfying, and you can also beat the main story without doing much grind, so it's pretty much balanced.

The only negative points I see with this game, along with the PC port:
- Healers/Supports are useless, as they won't get EXP for healing (and, because of that, they can't upgrade staff mastery nor level up). Thank to one game mechanic, you can teach them spells such as fire, wind or ice, so they can deal some damage. However, as for someone who has 100% new, it took me a lot of time to see that.
- Any I/O device being manipulated with the game open can cause it to crash. Lost Item World progress twice due to my controller being disconnected -thank you for nothing, Steam Big Picture.
- There are some other bugs that may cause the game to crash, but haven't encountered any other so far. However, this, along with the fact that you can't save inside IW, makes it risky to play at times.
- Dark Assembly. Not that I find it unfair, since there is probably a reason as to why some bills are mostly rejected. However, there's no in-game information about it. Like this, some other mechanics in the game are hidden unless you discover it or read it on a guide. The fact that I'm using DA as an example is mostly because there are no explainations as for bribings before voting, which is one of the most important aspects imo.
- As I've mentioned above, almost everything is either you discover it or read it somewhere. As such, it might be difficult to properly enjoy the game itself.

Bought for 3.99€ during Steam sale, worth the price but I'd suggest getting the handheld versions (PSP, DS or Switch) if you can't stand sitting in front of a screen to grind for lots of hours. It's also worth mentioning that there are different versions for this game, being them:
  • Original (PS2)
  • PSP (some minor updates)
  • DS (QoL improvements, new unlockable characters)
  • PC (somewhat PSP and a little DS, but without the QoL improvements)
  • HD remake (Switch-PS4, some more QoL improvements)
For a 'classic' experience, PC (aka this one) seems the best so far. I'd recommend the HD remake elsewhere, and mostly if you have 0 knowledge about Disgaea at all. Keep in mind, though, that even with QoL improvements, the grind is still present.

So TL;DR: if you love to get the very best team, like no one ever was, then this is the perfect game. The grind is kinda entertaining and rewarding, + funny story dialogues and iconic trio main cast.

"endlessly grind" —the game.

There's not much to say about this game tbh. It's basically a turn-based RPG featuring characters from Disgaea and some other series by collaborations (such as Attack on Titan, Re:Zero, Madoka Magica, etc). It has a gacha system to get the characters, where the "tokens" used for pulls can be gotten from basically doing story quests, daily missions, and even participating in events.

As I've mentioned, you have to grind all of your units and equipment to level them up and improve them. However, the game is pretty generous, as it has an auto-advance option for equipment grinding (called Item World) and daily maps to farm EXP that you can skip if you do all of the necessary quests.

Do you like Disgaea series? Do you like to suffer with RNG to get the best stats in the competitive? Then this is the game for you.

Negative points:
- At first, the game introduces you to way too many mechanics which you'll require time to process the information.
- Early on, energy (or stamina) can pretty much refill every few quests, as the EXP needed to level up is absurd on early levels. Thus, it can be a bit intimidating to try to get the energy to 0 and not being able because of this.
- Pity system for gacha and some other mechanics aren't really explained at all. As for example, stuff like what does an equipment have (rarity, rank, etc), each stat on a character, and more other stuff you would have to either test it out or ask through Discord/Google.
- Competitive, or PvP, is menacing at first. With a few units and probably not even level 100 on one of them, the system pairs you with high level players. This could be fixed by playing more and getting better, however, there are some daily quests that requires you to play PvP. Even as of rank 77, PvP pairing seems bad.
- If you are not familiar with Disgaea, you'll pretty much get lost. Not saying that you can't enjoy the game, but this is truly more of a "for the fans" game rather than a more general public.

Before I got this game on Steam, I've been playing every MH title out there (except for the PS2 version) and been refusing World, saying stuff like "it's ruining the game's honor". After Rise came out, and finished to the point I could play, I decided to give it a chance again, since my first time experiencing World was on the PS4, where the loading times were a hell compared to the hunts.

Playing the game again, beating it, watching every little detail the game has to offer to me, it just fascinated me. Truly, it was worth giving it a second chance. The gameplay feels so smooth (however, compared to Rise, it might look slower on evasions), and the story, while it may not look like a big thing, it just brings you to the addiction by wondering what would you be faced against after the next quest.

TL;DR: MHW exceeded all my expectations.

Even after the main story ends, you still get tons of challenges to do. So, if you are looking for a long game, to challenge yourself over and over, this is the right game for ya. If you are a big fan of the series, trust me, you won't regret adding it to your library.

When to buy?

If you are sure you only want MHW and not Iceborne expansion, go get the base game when you want! Both original and sale price are fine for what it brings.
If you, however, want also Iceborne, wait for a sale and buy the base game + Iceborne pack (make sure you pick the correct, it has to include both Monster Hunter World and Monster Hunter World: Iceborne on the pack).

What does Iceborne brings? (for people who doesn't know)

- Master Rank, quests that are in a higher level than High Rank (Lower Rank>High Rank>Master Rank)
- 2 new mechanics during hunts: Clutch Claw and Raider Ride
- Along with Master Rank, new monsters/armor/weapons

For full experience, go for Iceborne expansion. If you aren't sure if you are going to enjoy the game, then go play base game first, and, if you liked it, go for IB.

Hope this review helped :)

After 27h playthrough, and getting every single achievement, here goes my final opinion of the game:

Good, but becomes heavier to grind after some endings

First of all, a full view of how does the game works. The main mechanic is to choose between different stories, so you can build yourself different endings (in total, 25). Itself, that seems pretty good. However, after playing for some time, the gameplay becomes heavier with time. Mostly, this is due to:

• Not having the choice to skip the cinematics (when the game is telling you the options for the story, in some stories, etc). It's about 1-2 minutes per choice "reading", tho, but it really just makes me close the game, lmao.
• After completing the swords (you will have this as your weapon, and you can upgrade it), the materials (elemental orbs, iron) have no other uses. This makes the exploring part of the game really die, since, as for myself, I completed the whole set of swords around the 8th-9th ending.

Overall, that's all I have to complain about mechanics.

Bugs?

There aren't many bugs, or at least I found few. Those are, mostly, the character going crazy/not following the cursor and, just once, my cursor becoming invisible for the rest of the game, until I restarted. Besides those two, bugs are almost impossible to see.

Should you buy?

If you are going to spend lot of time grinding for the endings, yes! Go ahead! The game itself has a decent story. While some endings may look similar, they still have some unique details. However, if you are unsure wether or not to buy, I would recommend waiting for a sale.

Pros:

- Skills/Aim required to win, not as Paladins or Overwatch that there are counters.
- Fast matches.
- Easy to learn, hard to master.

Cons:

- Only 1 or 2 characters to play when you are new and F2P.
- Matchmaking takes way too much, even loading the tutorial is a pain.
- There isn't any training room.

If you love games likes CS, where your aim is more important than an ability, go ahead, this is your game. If, however, you prefer games like TF2, honestly you better know what are you going to face. There are only one ability, "ult" as we say on PD/OW, but it doesn't change the game at all, is just like a normal weapon (Plus every character got one different, so there is no "good" ult).
