Starfield is a game that has many parts, basic rpg mechanics, decent gunplay, fun dungeons to explore, basic settlement building, and a whole lot of fun side quests. It does none of these things particularly well and for each of them you can find a game that does it better, including its own bloodline of games. But still, it has that bloodline in its veins somewhat.

As per usual with Bethesda games its not any of these individual parts that make the experience great, but the overarching whole that is greater than the sum of its parts. Unfortunately, the whole of Starfield is weaker than Bethesda's previous games, in part to their great world design that usually ties all of these parts together being absent entirely. Each mechanic, location, and quest ends up feeling segmented and "game-y" where as Skyrim or Fallout 4 feel far more like an autonomous world that exists for its own sake rather than for the player. To me that feeling is the strongest part of what makes these games so great and without it, it just feel's incomplete despite having more content than ever before.

Now this isn't to say Starfield is a bad game at all, I still managed to have fun for about 30hrs and probably will play more. The abundance of content that is here does feel cool before you run into the wall of repetition thanks to its procedural generation. After the poor start, once you reach the honeymoon period around 12-40hrs and are constantly running into new things, its a lot of fun. On top of that the straight vastness the game delivers in terms of how much world space you can explore does feel very freeing even if it is empty.

To be honest I didn't really care if the planets were empty rocks because of how pretty the game looked and how well the tone was set. One of my favorite activities was just putting on relaxing space music and running around interesting environments while sipping a beer. Even if I wasn't shooting enemies or building bases, simple things like seeing a tall mountain and climbing up to it to see the view managed to keep me going a long way until they too got repetitive.

For me, Starfield is the furthest Bethesda has ever pushed with making the player find their own fun, and if you are the type of person who can do that you'll manage to keep going for a while until you get bored. It won't be a endless "forever game" like Skyrim because it lacks the great bedrock foundation that gives you a reason to look for new things to do, but it will still give you a good time before you uncover its facade, then you'll move on to something else and that will be that.

Truly a once in a generation game and one of the best open world games I've played, but I can't recommend it in the state its in performance wise. This is unacceptable in 2022 and as much as I'm enjoying it, I really wish it was delayed further. Hopefully performance will eventually be fixed, but until then, unless you can handle constant sway between 30 and 40 fps or have a VRR display, I suggest you wait.

This game has been one of the best experiences I've had with an FPS ever. I'm sure everyone already knows its story by now and that it will be gone forever soon. At least now by going free to play I can play one more time and find closure.

Never before have I seen a game that has combined story and gameplay in such a creative way and perfect both of them. Who the hell thought that rebooting a mediocre 8 year old rpg that nobody played would turn out so well.
After 30 hours of playing I only had a single game breaking bug and one crash.
I absolutly reccomend this game!
All I suggest before playing is that:
A) You watch a video explaining the story of the first Nier (Its not manditiory because the story in this game has little in common with the first, but it will make your experience way better if you understand the many references.
B) PLAY ALL THREE MAIN ENDINGS! The first two endings* are only the first half of the story, they are each from different character perspectives. The Third is the rest of the game and the best by far!
Alright thats enough, now just get the game!

Everyone here who is downvoting the game because of OpenVI are ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ 12 year olds who are throwing temper tantrums. People who mass downvote for no good reason don't deserver mods.
