I made an error in picking this game up in its "Ultimate" form. Before Season 1, the game was simply unacceptable, never buy into the hype.

With that being said, coming back to the game in the last few days has really shown that beneath the layers of muck and garbage there is an incredible Battlefield title in here. Gunplay feels good, the guns really kick, and more importantly, each gun feels unique. TTK isn't too short, nor is it too long. It feels like a good midpoint. Each weapon fills its niche well, and while the "plus" system is a bit gimmicky (switching out attachments, ammo types, scopes, and barrels on the fly) its actually occasionally useful and allows for what was a gun kitted out to engage at range to now become a CQB monster without needing to switch loadouts.

Progression is great too, I haven't gone a game without unlocking something for the work I've put in, be it a new gun attachment or a skin a player card, there's generally something going on. What is weird is how vehicles are split between nations, and unlocking, say, AGMs on your US Apache won't translate to the Ru Super Hokum (on that note, the only difference as far as I can tell between them is that the Super Hokum can get a 30 mm fixed gun, while the Apache can't, which is accurate and all, but of all the faction unique vehicles, as far as I'm aware these are the only two where one has a different unlock than the other.)

On the topic of vehicles, they just feel good. Gone are the days of snapping your tank turret around and straight onto the poor helpless SOB who's now got a ticket to go meet their maker, now its a matter of the gun slewing over at a set rate, regardless of how fast you acquire your target. (Think War Thunder's aiming system). Jets feel good, and helicopters feel great. They're easy to fly and quickly get a feel for. My only complaint is that I wish the tanks were a bit more reactive to input and could actually neutral steer, but I'm a massive tank nerd, and real life and game balance don't always align.

The Specialists aren't the best, and I'm not a huge fan of the classless system with the ability to pick any gun and gadget, but once again, with that being said, while the specialists are here to stay, they will be sorted into classes with gadget limitations in Season 3, per DICE. Furthermore, their class unique gadgets are genuinely fun to play with. I just wish they weren't tied to a "hero." I'm glad they've taken out the cringe worthy endgame voice lines. The pregame ones are great though, they bring through just a bit more character than would be had from just stoic military individuals posing for the camera. (Mackay's line about ascending Everest and the rest being downhill is a personal favorite.)

As for the maps, the launch maps were... less than subpar. They sucked. Zero cover, lots of dead space without anything going on, just an area to cover (or get sniped from a billion miles away). But, once again, with the right work, the new maps and reworked maps feel great. Much more inline with the classic BF experience that we expect from the series. The newer spaces are visually interesting and far more interesting to play in.

There's a lot that BF2042 needs to do to get into the realm of being great, but, with the foundations that are finally being put into place over the last few months, there's serious potential here, DICE just needs to keep listening to the community and then implementing what's asked for. There's a lot of rough edges that need polishing, performance can be further improved (even though its vastly better than it was at launch) but there is a fantastic game here, it just needed more time in the oven before being released into the wild.

In short, solid fundamentals, lots of potential, bad initial execution hurt its initial trajectory, but overall a good game, and most importantly, fun. If you're unsure about it, wait for a sale. If you're feeling particularly bold, go for it.

Legit almost cried remembering the happy times I felt snapping players necks and running them down in a hog. 10/10 would relive the beginning of the end again.

Trains are fun. Managing trains is fun. Managing the wants and needs of a dozen shapes who refuse to walk the three feet to their destination and instead demand to clog up my metro system? Still fun. 10/10.

This is a step too far Take Two. Modding is an interregnal part of why people buy PC games. By alienating modders, you alienate your fans. GTAO can be fun, but by trying to milk your community for nickels and dimes, it's just sad and pathetic. No one is being "under monetized", just choosing weather or not they want to support your company. I want to believe in Rockstar, but the upper echelons of Take two just ruin it for everybody else. This is a pathetic move by a pathetic company lording over what I believe to be genuinely good people at Rockstar. Shame.
*Edit. Good guy Rockstar. Good game, online is eh cuz micro transactions.
