A flawed classic. 7 out of 10.

I've owned this game forever, but finally got around to playing it all the way through. Highly recommend if you're a fan of the original Star Wars EU and old-school shooters. Far from perfect though. If you want specific details on my experience with the game, read on.

This and its sequel, Jedi Academy, have the best lightsaber combat in any Star Wars game in my opinion. It's even better with the dismemberment cheat code. Being able to cut stormtroopers in half just by walking up to them with your saber out will never not be funny. Pretty good enemy variety; dark jedi are the most fun to fight. Movement feels really good. Kyle Katarn is a beast and is one of my favorite EU characters. Story is simple but serviceable. I really liked seeing what the Imperial Remnant was up to throughout the game. OT character cameos here and there. The game takes off once you get your lightsaber. Boss fights are pretty good. Force powers are really fun.

This game, however, is far from perfect. As with many older PC games, it takes some tweaking to get it to act right on modern hardware. There are some guides on the community page that can get you going in that regard. Lots of savescumming required if you don't want to rip your hair out -- have those quick save/load binds ready because checkpoints are scarce. Level design can be questionable: lots of dark areas and small grates to shoot to progress. It isn't always clear where to go which is exacerbated by lack of a map and sometimes vague objectives. Nar Shaddaa level is probably the worst of the bunch (the rodian snipers are almost as bad as the Halo 2 sniper jackals.) Keep a guide handy for when you get stuck. Gunplay is decent but not amazing, lightsaber is the real star.

All things considered, this game still rips. If you're a fan of Star Wars and can tolerate a healthy dose of jank, give it a shot! Thanks for reading.

It's one of the pioneers of the FPS genre. Incidentally, it also happens to be one of the best ever. Favorite FPS of all time.

A pretty good expansion to Half Life.

PROS:
+Shows another side of the Black Mesa Incident, this time from the point of view of Barney Calhoun, security guard.
+Hard difficulty is generally fair, unlike Opposing Force
+Introduces physical armor feature, meaning you pick up your armor instead of using the HEV chargers
+Xen sections tone down the platforming
+More world building, expands on the secrets of Black Mesa Research Facility

CONS:
-Less weapons than the original Half Life; throughout the game, you only get the pistol, SMG, shotgun, rocket launcher, and other explosives
-Some of the puzzles are very cryptic, especially in the chapter "Power Struggle"
-Enemy placement can be complete ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ at times, especially in ventilation shafts
-No new enemies

CONCLUSION: Overall, Blue Shift is a worthy expansion to Half Life. While it lacks the innovation of Opposing Force, which introduced new enemies and weapons, Blue Shift dials back the difficulty and length of the game to provide a simple, yet enjoyable experience.

Overall a great expansion to Half Life that a lot of people sleep on.

Pros:
+New and interesting weapons which bring new ways to play to the table
+New enemies
+Solid level design
+Compelling alternate perspective of the Black Mesa Incident

CONS:
-New enemies are annoying as ♥♥♥♥
-The game is IMPOSSIBLE on hard without extreme save scumming
Some sections of the game are pretty dumb (i.e. the entire sewer section)

Conclusion: Overall a great expansion to the original Half Life, though it has issues with difficulty.
