You have to play it with a friend or use mods for more than 1 friend. The combat is terrible and all the enemies are just damage sponges that power through any of your attacks without being staggered. They also 2 to 3 shot you and most attacks knock you down while most attacks you do don't affect them. On top of that you lose maximum health per hit until you rest. At the same time the bugs can stop you from progressing and even wipe you inventory. The entire game also is meant to be researched because there is no respec system and instead you are expected to buy things without getting an exact feel for how they work. The magic is cool but if you don't research the combinations you will end up not using it the fullest potential, plus you have to sacrifice stamina and magic to use it (which isn't entirely a bad thing).

So why buy it? Simple: Walking is fun

The game feels like your in a DND session with hard enemies and arguing with your friends about taking the wrong turn at the bandit camp. You all carry around backpacks and trek through cool areas that are all obscure and provide their own challenge. You have the change clothes to match the weather or you die. It goes from bouts of doing nothing and just walking to getting wiped by poorly designed enemies Plague Doctor. The game feels like a Eurojank game, good ideas but sub optimal coding, skills, or time.

In my opinion to truly get the best experience you have to do some things.

Make sure its on sale for at most 20 any more and it feels like you've been robbed. Make sure you have a friend because this entire game is made for coop and is a living nightmare to fight anything by yourself, plus the world design is made for coop. Google search new items you find so you understand what they do and how they can help you. Realize some areas and mechanics are inherently bad and just avoid them Jade Quarry. Finally ABUSE THE SYSTEM, the game already cheats itself if you can find ways to make easy money outside of using the debug menu do it, its just Morrowind made by indie devs.

> Lose an old fasion pistol duel for honor
> I rise the ranks in the political court
> Use the newfound political power to command the inquisitors to kill the person who beat me in the duel
> Buy out all of his w h o re houses taverns
> His wife brings charges against me for murder
> During court day I get cleared of all charges because my wife is the magistrate
> My enemy's wife has an "accident", forcing their kids to be orphans
> Adopt their kids only to find out one of them has the black plague
> Whole family dies due to all the hosipitals being out of buisness because the owners died from having the wrong religion and from having too many "accidents"

> look over at the other city and find it all on fire because I accidently misclicked and told one of my goons to firebomb a random building where no one walks by.

You know the game is good when the story is more coherent than the world.

If you like puzzles via trial and error then you would like this game. If you are extreamly bored and want to sink a few hours in, then you might want to try this game. Im one of those people that judges games by hours of fun per dollar and I can say it kept me interested for around 5 hours (until I beat it and decided to not go achivment hunting). Here is a small preface to help you understand on what you will get.

So you you are in charge of making sure the crew survives, however you are you and you can only communicate to the crew via some weird mind communication thingymadoodad. In an effort to save spoilers the crew's ship is geting to get destroyed in 6 ingame hours and you gotta communicate to and for the crew on how to survive. Luckily for you the ship is stuck in a timeloop, and you can just reset the whole thing at your leisure (with exception of one part). However it affects the ending somewhat

Now personally this game wasent bad, I mean it could of been better, but alot of games can be better. I like the idea of the crew being stuck in a timeloop and how each crew memeber has their personality. The writing is well and descriptive, although this was made by a russian company so the english translation can be faulty at times. There is this key facts system in place that allows you to remember some things you from a alternate cycle, which allows you to do things you couldent do in the past.

If your curious on what the bad stuff is, it follows:
  • The game isnt a puzzle as it is more of a trial and error game with the rougelike element of having to redo everything from the start, this can get really tiresome.
  • The limitations of the game are clear and extreamly linear. Even if you know the answer some questions, because you did not experience it in the right way you cannot choose the way you really wanna go.
  • There is no way to pause the game, but if you tap the ESC key it closes the game (dont worry the game saves itself everytime it closes). This is frustrating as I tended to press the key accidently to bring up the menu a few times, only to get sent to my desktop.
  • Some parts of the game require timing the idea is soild but it requires you to listen to the music and if you screw up just a tad you have to restart most of the game over again.
  • Some parts of the game change randomly with each cycle, A good idea in concept but if you dont read carefully as you click really fast to get back to where you reset you might end up clicking the wrong one because the answers changed. Also some parts there is trial and error, and the question changes which means you just have to get lucky twice in a row or spend alot of time restarting. How am I suppose to know how deep im suppose to dig in basalt or tuff?

There are probably alot more but I dont want to turn you away, it is a game well worth 2 dollars and this is the first game these devs made. (atleast according to steam)

TLDR, just buy the game and make your inference. If I was force to rate this game out of 10 I would give it a 6/10.

Summary: Get Call of Pripyat or Clear Sky and read about what happens on the wiki. (Pripyat is the best)

Stalker Shadow of Chernobyl is a decent start to a game franchise but it as itself isn't really a fun game in my opinion, for starters the gunplay is really wonky as you need to pretty much get headshots or your out of luck (especially with the invincibility animations for every human enemy), It has a lot of bugs which I bet mods fix but still bugs are bad, everything isn't translated to English, there really isn't no thrill in artifact hunting and a few more things.

I managed to "beat" the game in exactly 10 hours believe it or not and got one of the fake endings, what this means is that somewhere along the line I did the game a little out of order, or something bugged out, or I just didn't meet the right people. To me having a game mechanic like that isnt really my thing. (Would rather have 3 endings than 5 fake endings and 2 real endings that you have to look up a walk through to find.)

This game exists between a open world game and a linear game as in it has side quests like things which are alright but you don't really get any reward other than rubles and maybe one of the 4 common artifacts that are literally laying on the ground everywhere you look after the first area.

There are a bunch more things you can rip from the game but it does it job well as being the first of the stalker franchise, thus at the time establishing an ip that has a cool setting. But in the end the game isn't that great and if you really wanted to play it I suggest getting a big mod to fix the bugs and some other things.

All else just skip the game, go to clear sky or call of Pripyat and read about what happens on the wiki because even so I still don't understand some parts because I feel as the game forced me to get a "fake" ending and if I didn't know better then I would of assumed that it was a real one.

If you were to force me at gun point to put a number at it I would say 3 or 4 /10 only because of the cheekie breekie.

Early Access Review
Awhile ago I think this game was on sale for like 2 dollars and I never played because I forgot about. One day I was bored and decided to give it a try and I liked it. sure it doesnt have the best graphics like elite dangerous but with the easy flying and active devs this game sure is a fun one. The only real problems is that the server is barely populated and some things are a little overpriced (1 map with 3 locations is 3 mil) also some other small ui stuff. Its still fun to accidently get too close to a sun burn up and loose all 1000 of your diamonds or buying a ship in a level 50 territory and flying it all the way back to your level. id give this a thumbs up because I got my monies worth buy for 9 dollers I wouldent buy it maybe for at its current sate id give it a 5$ price mark. Well that is my 2 cents.

sorry about spelling errors
