Combat A Little ... Weird
I’m new to this mod, and relatively inexperienced with the game. I installed both a few days ago, and chose to start a new campaign as Rome. A handful of turns in, I have my first major battle which happened to be against Epirus. It was a pretty bad experience. There was numerical parity (full stack). Led by my faction leader, I had about 50% Principes, and 50% mixed units. The enemy had some hoplite units, levy’s and missile troops. Their strongest force was 4 units of Chalkaspides. What cause it to be a weird and “bad” experience from a gaming perspective was that I had routed some missile units early on, and I was able to encircle most of the remaining enemy units expecting this to grind them down and cause them to die relatively quickly. My issue is that the encirclements seemed to have little to no effect whatsoever. The enemy units didn’t panic, or rout despite being surrounded for long periods of time from all sides. My own units seemed to struggle inflicting kills (even with charges into a rear of phalanx). There was no disruption of formation. My troops just seemed impotent and the enemy seemed to have plot armour. Very bad experience. Is this what I should be expecting?

I didn't. Mostly Principes, otherwise the other spear units. I only had 2 units of slingers which i kept at the back.

So im playing my first campaign of DEI. I use 2 principes 4 hastati for frontline. They go into whatever the defensive formation is called on contact. Then i use 8 slingers which are super cheap and Rorarii to flank one side and start rolling up the enemy lines. Frontline barely loses any men depending how fast i roll up and crush enemy line from the flank.

Slingers are deadly from sides or back and pretty useless head on. Principes i use to soak up enemy missile fire if i can be bothered. My frontline can hold entire armies but i sometimes keep 1-2 rorarii to reinforce gaps.

TLDR Flank and Roll. Cav not required. Rome is OP. :approved:

Are you playing on Legendary? DeI is supposed to be played on normal battle difficulty or else enemies will get a massive buff on stats like how you are describing it. Even the weakest hoplite unit will become tough as nails if you play on legendary.

Chalkaspides are very tough units. All phalanx units will take a long time to grind down. It's almost impossible to kill them front on, and even flanking them will take a while. They are some of the best elite units that's why. Hit them with missile units from behind/siege equipment while they march toward you
