It may have been a while since you last played gate crasher, but as I have just played it, I can say without a doubt it mentions nothing about using a flare to evac. The mission just ends abruptly just like vanilla xcom.
they aren't talking about gatecrasher, and they don't mean the first mission of LWOTC. They mean in the tutorial for vanilla xcom 2, they show you how to throw a flare. if you don't know how to throw an evac flare you shouldn't be playing LWOTC. Play vanilla xcom 2 first so you can learn the basics.
Having to babysit a mission to make sure you don't accidentally miss the launch window with the consequence being you instantly loose potentially HOURS of time on a resistance haven getting them up to max members through several missions, all of that wasted. Gone, through no fault of your own? What the heck
And - not to mention, it bugs out your squad. I now have 10 soldiers that just disappeared and are permanently "on mission" forever. My campaign is now lost entirely because of that. Wow.
I don't understand how it bugged out your ten soldiers. It's not an infiltration mission, so how did you lose them?
I'm not sure what happened and the crash log didn't help much this time. It was a supply raid mission, i had 11 hours to infiltrate it but there was no warning or game pause or anything, possibly because I was enroute to another location when it timed out. It deleted the haven and the soldiers infiltrating it were permanently set to 'infiltrating: 5 days" forever.
I of course am playing with other mods, who doesn't? But the only mods I could think of that might change missions or the avenger's behavior are:
-Mission Overhaul:Core and Mercury, but it was supposed to be a supply raid?
-Stop Wasting my Time / Still stop wasting my time (?) since they change avenger speed on geoscape and speed up how fast time passes.
So I don't know, maybe there's some issue there.
I have a bunch more but given most of them are qol or cosmetic I doubt they're at fault. Maybe when I feel willing to start over once more I can try playing without those and see if it happens again.
Edit: I also have ABA: Better missions, Additional Mission Types Redux, and Covert Action Missions on as well. I just forgot about those! I suppose it shouldn't be too surprising one of them messed up. To be fair, they work fine together normally.
I don't know if it was actually 10 that got sent out. It was a supply raid mission that bugged out. The only mods I have which change missions are the Mission Overhaul: Core / Mercury mods, so maybe it's their fault. Who knows, I'm not versed in code.

The amount of XP required to level may be 1 mission for the first few ranks, but will require more missions later. You can install several different mods: Show me the XP, [WOTC] Soldier Info Redux, and/or [WOTC] Extended Personnel Info to have ways of seeing the current "kill" XP and what's needed for level up. Mission XP is given when a mission is successful.
