wait, you're setting (e.g.) five at the squad select, and then another two are joining the missions anyway? because that shouldn't be happening, outside a very rare mission type where you START with the "freed" captives and have to get to the evac location.

LWotC sets the default max squad size to 8, but it's rarely a good idea to take that many. the standard "screen" at the squad deployment only shows six, and you have to drag it around to see the other two. i start every deployment by hitting "Clear Squad" and select them each manually.

If you have permanent squads set up and you pick one of those squads it will always auto fill the max possible number of soldiers from that squad for the mission unless you manually remove some of them. If you scroll the mouse wheel while in the squad select screen it will rotate through all of the soldiers in the squad so you can see them. By default it shows 6 but if there are more of them you can scroll the mouse wheel to reveal them and remove any extras that you don't want to take.

Was being caused by an addon that altered the squad size also. Think it actualy changed the number of available spots for members to load in and the game auto filled them. Fairly sure running anything that alters squad size, on top of long war, will cause issues.

I can't scroll the soldiers.
I can see only 6 soldiers.
