Phaneron's Basic Storage

Description

Here we go again, another storage mod. Basic Storage is meant as an attempt to give players highly varied storage options beyond the vanilla shelves, without cluttering the menu with dozens of different buildings.

Basic Storage uses the Adaptive Storage Framework (ASF) to achieve this. It allows for the textures of buildings to change depending on what and how much is stored in them. For example, this means a single building can look completely different depending on if it stores wood or steel, leading to less clutter in your menu. Additionally, some buildings have different textures depending on which way they are rotated. Buildings that change depending on what they store usually have more than one stage to show how many stacks of that specific items are stored in it.

What you need to do to change the appearance of any given building is mentioned in the info text of each building and indicated by which kind of arrow is next to their name on the infographics below.

This mod is supposed to fit fairly well into the game and give players more visual variety, not replace shelves. This means, while some of the buildings can store more stacks than shelves, they cost more and most of the time are far more restricted in what they store. There are some buildings that can store items you can't normally store in shelves, though their material cost reflects this.

This mod also adds two new research projects, Neolithic Storage, which currently only has one building in it (future additions will likely change that), and Complex Storage, which unlocks the rest. Some of the buildings in Complex Storage also need other research projects to be unlocked before they become available.

- The Adaptive Storage Framework is currently incompatible with Packable Containers. The contents of buildings moved with the help of this mod disappear.
- When using the select texture feature of VE with this mod, you can't change the texture of shelves.
- CE ammo stored in the shelves is not visible, but should appear again once removed.

Basic Storage also changes how items are displayed on shelves, simply because I can and I hate how disorderly items on shelves look normally. Because of how the ASF works, this isn’t retroactive, meaning all shelves build before this mod was activated need to be replaced for this to take effect.

For bugs, typos, values that should be changed etc. please comment below.

klvlt adapted some of the textures from this mod into their own storage buildings. Look here for a dedicated medicine crate. Check out their other mods for some more storage options.

- Thanks to Sir Van for the awesome steel retexture that the steel in the Small Crates and Metal Crates is based on.
- Thanks to Bradson who created the Adaptive Storage Framework which makes this mod possible.
- Shoutout to JANGOD’SOUL and the Simple Storage mod that I’ve used for hundreds of hours and that inspired this mod.

HI Phaneron! I'm working on quite a few mods at the moment, and seeking a texture artist. I adore your textures, and I've seen that you've worked on textures for others' mods. What's the best way to reach out to you for collaboration and/or comissioning?

@Phaneron I can see the reason for the tech being separated, it does probably make life a bit nicer for some of the medieval gamers, in the future i'll probably just accept that my storage is slightly ugly in the very beginning, thanks for the reply!

Hey I recommend just using dev mode to unlock them if it's an issue for you. They are locked behind research intetnionally, mainly so that peoply who want to play at a certain tech level can just exclude the more modern storage.
Unless you are starting with just one pawn you'll be able to unlock most of the buildings within the first hour of playing, even when playing as tribals.

hey would it be possible to tie these buildings to base game researches or potentially making them default, currently it is a shame that I can't really utilise these from the start, any help would be appreciated!

The DrawDynamicThings method of storage buildings draws their contents and not the building itself. Lag there is often caused by corpses with a patched pawn renderer, or other animated things in storage. You aren't gonna see the method take more than analyzer's minimum when only having static items or even nothing in storage

I've noticed something strange while using Dub's Performance Analyzer. This mod's storage containers are taking way more memory than Adaptive Ideology Storage's. For example, BasicStorageMediumCrate takes ~3.500 ms (Avg per Frame), while AIS's Freight B (being full of steel), takes only 0.300. The 4 storage units from this mod that I placed on the map are the Top 4 most performance hungry for some reason. Thanks

@bradson thanks I'll check there.

Adaptive Storage Framework's mod settings have a slider to customize that label display range. Nearly full zoom in is the vanilla default without camera mods

Is there a way to have the text saying what is in a crate visible from further out? Currently it's only visible if I zoom all the way in.

This is an awesome mod, but i do wish there were more content based textures haha.
