Intro
There are more than 800 guides in different languages about Fallout 4 and I tried to pick the best english guides for this guide. Some guides would fit in more than one chapter, but every guide is listed only once. Later I did add some of my experiences.

The game has a documentation in the game, you can access it by opening the pause menu with "ESC" and the selection "HELP".

My personal realationship with the Fallout series:
I enjoyed the first 2 turn based parts on PC and was suspicious when I heard part 3 was going to be different. But I totally felt in love with part 3 and it was my most played PS3 game. Back on PC Fallout Las Vegas was a little bit disappointing, because I expected to get a new game and not a stand alone DLC with recycled PS3 graphics.
I played Fallout 4 without any DLC, mods or console cheats for over 400 hours and I still love it. Even if it has some clumsy programmed parts like the inventory or building big houses in settlements without using the console cheats or mods.
Main Char
In the English version the game can speak out the name of your char in the dialogues, if the name is in the following list. I don't know whether or not it works in other languages.

Skills
There are 7 base skills and every base skill starts with 1.
  • Strength
  • Perception
  • Endurance
  • Charisma
  • Intelligence
  • Agility
  • Luck
In the early stage of the game you can invest 21 more skill points.
The skill system differs from Fallout 3. With every level you get 1 skill point, which you can use for raising one base skill or for a perk.
There is only one time you can change your choices:Before leaving the vault.
!The game does override its auto saves, keep a manual save from before leaving the vault!

Intelligence / XP-Builds
Every point intelligence gives you a 3% bonus on all earned XPs and makes hacking terminals easier. 10 int could give you a +30% bonus, but the best build for XP-Bonus is 2 int and the Idiot Savant perk (luck 5).
Baseless rumor: You can gain a great long term bonus from such special XP-builds (only in survial mode it can make sense).
In normal mode a special XP-bonus skilling isn't worth the skill points for many reasons:
  • XP farming is easy, at most places the enemies respawn after a while.
  • The needed XP for the next level always increases.
  • With a better combat skilling you kill more enemies in the same time.
4 points in Intelligence is a good start value and allows you to increase the hacking skill.
Like all other attributes the game uses your actual values. Wearing clothes with int bonus makes hacking easier and increases the bonus XP.

Endurance / Hit points
Endurance increases hit points and reduces the action point consumption during sprints.
The hit point calculations:
80 + (5 * endurance) + (2.5 + (endurance * 0.5)) * XP-level) = HP
80 base hit points.
5 hit points for every point in endurance.
2.5 additional hit points for every XP-level.
0.5 points for every endurance point multiplicated with XP-level.
It doesn't matter at which level you get your endurance points, it's always new calculated.

The benefit of high endurance kicks in lately, it's no problem for ranged fighters to start with 1 point.

Agility
Agility raises your Action Points, improves sneaking and pocket theft.
Action Points = 60 + (Agility * 10)

Exceeding the maximun of 10 base skill points
When you have already 10 skill base skill points in one skill you can't raise it with normal skill points. But for every base skill exists excact one bobblehead, this bobblehead increase the base skill by one point. If you have raised the base skill already up to 10 you raise it to 11.
The following guide shows a way to increase a base attribut value up to 12:

Plan your char!
You have to focus what playstyle you want, because most enemies are leveling too.
At the moment I see 3 different starting main builds:
  • Close Combat (melee or unarmored)
  • Stealth Damage Bonus
  • VATS/Crit Damage Bonus(see next chapter)

Guides about skilling
The writers of the following guides have very different thoughts about an ideal starting skilling. My thoughts about my prefered start are in the next chapter about VATS.

Non-Vats Shooty Builds

Food and Drugs
You can boost your skills and abilities temporarily with meals and drugs. I don't know what of them was in use when he did add this video to his guide. ;-)

Ranged Shooter V.A.T.S. Build
V.A.T.S. (Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System)
VATS has been introduced in Fallout Fallout 3. It slows the time and you can choose single body parts for your attacks. The hit probability increases with Perception and every VATS attack consumes Action Points. Later you can use up to 3 saved critical hits, this is very good against strong enemies.
The consumption of action points in VATS depends mostly on the weight and not on the fire rate of the weapon. Successful attacks in VATS build your Critical meter. Once the meter is filled, you can unleash a devasting critical attack.
You can enter the VATS mode with the key Q.

In the screenshot you can see a full critical meter and three stored cits. To perform the planed shots press E and for a critical shot press Space before the shot is executed.
Tip: VATS shows also mines and flying grenades as possible targets.

Building a good VATS power costs some level up points.
Raising Agility and Perception to 11 (using bobbleheads for the last points), the perks Action Boy (2) and Concentrated Fire (1). Later: Improving crits by raising luck up to 7, the perks Critical Banker (3) and Better Criticals (3).
This sounds easier than it is, because you will need also many points for your settlement perks and other things.

Early problems with VATS-build
A) The pool of action points depends on agility, but you don't have enough action points to fight always in VATS mode.
B) It takes some time till VATS works good, because in the early phase the range of your weapons are to limited and not good enough to use VATS effectiv for long distances. You have to find the right distance where to use VATS in a fight.
General Problem: You can't target in VATS an enemy who is using a stealth boy.
Don't miss this accuracy bonus!
For nearly noiseless sneaking you must crouch very slowly. You can switch your speed with "Caps Lock".
Chameleon is one of the best random legendary armor effects you can find. If you are crouching and not moving it makes you nearly invisible and gives you the sneak damage bonus.

Crits
In many games critcal hits are a random thing, not in this game. There are two independent kind of crits with their seperate mechanics, the sneak bonus and the VATS crit.

You can combine these two and use a weapon with crit bonus.
This kills even big enemies with one shot. The used weapon in this case:

How to use the level up points
In this build it's a goal to reach 11 points with the bubbleheads in the base attributes Perception and Agility .
  1. Use the You are Special book to increase Perception up to 10
  2. Locksmith 1
  3. Gun Nut 1
  4. Scrounger 1
  5. Charisma 6
  6. Local Leader 1
  7. Concentrated Fire 1

You should get the companion perk from MacCready, you can hire him in Godneighbour.
Companions
Similar to Skyrim you can have a companion who helps you fighting the enemies and carrying the loot.

Weapons, Armor and Inventory of the Companions
When you try to equip your companions you discover that their inventory can differ from yours.
Companions and some NPCs can have up to 2 additional sections in the inventory:
1. Invisible and indirect accessible: It normally contains the clothes they are wearing. By equipping other clothes the old clothes get visible and the new equiped clothes vanish in this inventory.
2. Invisible and not accessible: It normally contains their private weapon, this weapon is used when they have no better weapon with ammo. They don't need ammo for this weapon. You can't replace or improve this weapon.
Tip for infights: Give your companions an additional melee weapon, they are smart enough to switch to a melee weapon in infights and back to guns for distant enemies.

Load capacity
This is not well designed, because, the companions differ to much in their load capacity. Cait for example can carry normally only 138 additional armor, weapons and loot. Even dogmeat (150) can carry as much as most of them.
But It's possible to raise the load capacity of many companions with cloths and armor parts which increase strength and load capacity (see chapter armor for an example).
Codsworth is a good carrier in the early game, but Strong is naturally the best carrier (278) or choose Dogmeat and raise your own load capacity with the Lone Wanderer perk.

Relationships and Romances
You can get a permanent perk from every companion with maxed relationship. No romance is needed for the perk.
Every companion has an attribute value for its relationship with you, it's changed by playing with them as an active companion and your actions. Normally when it hits 250, 500, 750, and 1000 it raises a level and they will have a new dialogue available. At the highest level you get their bonus perk. You keep it even if you aren't travelling with them or their affinity goes down later. Many companions give you a personal quest at some point of the relationship.
You can have a romance with some of of the companions. Good charisma helps you with the flirting.

Prestion is not one of my favorite companions, but he gives a good permanent perk. You should try to collect the perks of most companions.

Anomalies / Restrictions
Dogmeat: He doesn't count as a normal companion: The perk Lone Wanderer functions with him as an active companion. If you have ordered Dogmeat to stay in Sanctuary Hills and you can't find him, he is probably in one of the doghouses. Tip: Remove all doghouses except for one, that makes it easier to find him.
Codsworth: He can't use any other weapon, cloth or armor. Only a Bowler Hat can be equiped.
Valentine: He can't use any other armor or cloth. He can hack terminals for you.
Cait: She can pick locks for you, if she has bobby pins in her inventory. Her perk description seems wrong. The wiki: "The official description in game is: The player character's Action Points regenerate +25% faster, if the Hit Points value is below 25% of its maximum.
However, this perk has never functioned this way. When the player's Action Points are below 25 points, they regenerate 50% faster. Which makes this perk a good way to recover those first few action point much faster if you regularly run out of action points (regardless of how much health you have).
"
Paladin Danse: First it is only possible to raise the relationship 2 levels. It is misleading that you still get the messages about his likes and dislikes. After the quest Blind Betrayal you can raise higher.
Strong: The only kind of armor he can use is mutant armor.

Weapons

This artwork is right, in the game you can change some pistols into a rifle by replacing the grip with a stock. All three types of pipe weapons Pipe, Pipe-Bolt and Pipe Revolver can be pistols or rifles.

Normal Pipe Pistol with a grip.
The same "pistol" fully pimped and with a stock. It's now a full automatic rifle.

Tip: I don't agree all times with descriptions and values like fire rate. Give every weapon type and special weapon a try and you are getting some surprises (Spray n' Pray).

Heavy Weapons
  • Broadsider
  • Fat Man
  • Flamer
  • Junk Jet
  • Mini Gun
  • Missile Launcher

Unarmed, Fist, Melee and Bash
All 4 terms are used in the game and not always in the correct place. I did find it a little bit disturbing.
In Fallout 4 unarmed doesn't mean without weapon, because fighting with Fist Weapons counts as unarmed.
You can click on the screenshoot to enlarge and see, that the game talks about melee and shows a fist weapon.
All other close quarter weapons are melee weapons like knives and baseball bats.
Bashing with the stock, grip and bajonet of a shooting weapon is something else.
There are three different perks for raising the damage of unarmed/fist (Iron Fists), melee (Big Leagues) and bashing (Basher).

Fist (unarmed) weapons are:
  • Boxing Glove
  • Deathclaw Gauntlet
  • Knuckles
  • Power Fist

As you can see in this table normal armor is getting heavier in the game and also all weapons are getting heavier.
Chameleon is one of the best random legendary armor effects you can find. If you are crouching and not moving it makes you nearly invisible and gives you the sneak crit bonus.

That all makes light and good armor precious.
There is the great quest series The Silver Shroud for a light and good looking armor. This armor can be upgraded by quests till level 45. You should do the first parts under level 25, because if you are older the quest series can break. You get this quest in Goodneighbour after listening to the radio chanel Silver Shroud Radio.
As a bonus the axe and the armor of Groknak can be collected in the same location. If you don't use the armors yourself, give them to your companions.
Doesn't this look like heavy armor? ;-)

After making quests for the Railroad and Armorer level 4 you can improve some normal clothes with Ballistic Weave (110 balistic and 110 energy protection). Caits Red Dress and News Cap in this picture are armored. She still can wear arm armor, this depends on the piece of cloth as usual.
This works also with Battered Fedora, Green Rag Hat and Trilby Hat for the head and many clothes for the body like Army Fatigues.
But if you want her to carry a lot of loot you shouldn't choose by look.

Now she wears Armored Army Fatigues and 5 parts leather armor with the mods Deep Pocketed and Shadowed. That raises her effectiv load capacity by more than 35, the weight of the armor is calculated.
If you have armor with strength bonus you can raise it even more.

Power Armor
Fusion core tips:
  • Never let a fusion core inside an armor after use
  • The selling price of a 1/100 core is the same like a 100/100 core
  • Use fast travel on the map, because this doesn't consume power of the core

Charisma and Intelligence outfits
It does make sense to carry additional cloths with you.
Additional charisma makes the speach challenges easier and additional intelligence makes hacking easier.
Story, Factions and Main Quests
There are different kind of quests:
  • Main Quests
  • Faction Quests
  • Side Quests
  • Repeative Generated Quests
  • Misc quests
A few main quests have an impact on the whole Fallout 4 world.Killing Kellog and ending the quest Reunion switches to ACT II.
Entering the institue switches to ACT III.

Example for repeative generated quests: The BOS quests Quartermastery and Cleansing the Commonwealth.
Some late faction quests can have a bad impact on the relationship with one or more other factions.

The first guide in the next chapter Achivements has also very good informations about main and faction quests.

Hey, thanks for referencing my guide. Much appriciated!

Thx, I have added your remark.
Magic Gonads 24 янв. 2017 г. в 1:54
That also gives this guide a good reason to exist, since it features guides which are all in english, but it's tagged with all languages, essentially spreading these guides out of the english language tag.
Magic Gonads 24 янв. 2017 г. в 1:53
Ok that makes perfect sense, I was unaware of that, I suppose I should also tag all of my guides for all languages too.
Marbur  [создатель] 24 янв. 2017 г. в 1:51
I flaged all languages because steam shows only the guides in your langauge and there is no switchable option to change that.
To see the english guides I must first start a search for the best or newest guides. After that I get an icon to remove the restriction on german guides. This I have to do every time I enter the guide section. :steamsad:
This is the reason for many guide writers to flag all languages. I hope that steam will make it possible to select the languages for default guide lists.
Magic Gonads 24 янв. 2017 г. в 1:47
I wasn't actually commenting on the fact you said cheating, I was referring to the fact that you effectively equated the 'peace' that you get from following my guide to the 'peace' you get from following the others. The cheating (which I am fine to call it) is a necessary evil for a different arrangement.

If you read my guide mine has a focus on keeping the institute alive, which is something effectively ignored in all other peace guides.

What I mean is that instead of saying "Peace by cheating" you should say "Peace including the institute, by cheating"
Marbur  [создатель] 24 янв. 2017 г. в 1:44
English is not my first language and I used the word "cheating", because this overrides the limits set by the game designers. Cheating has always the risk of additional problems because you can't expect that they have tested it completly.
I admit, even without cheats or mod the game has sometimes problems with quests.
Magic Gonads 23 янв. 2017 г. в 22:04
Also what's up with the tags for this guide? It's in English (and possibly a little German), so why did you specify all languages?
