KFM's Solar Panels

Description
Description:
Cheap, single-block solar panels. Large and small grid variants

A variant of the standard solar panels that don't require as many resources or take up as much room as the default panels. Consequently, due to their size and resource cost, they generate less power than the standard, as well: the LG blocks generate 1/2 of the power of a LG solar panel block

A variant that generates twice as much power can be found here:

If you enjoy this mod, a thumbs up would be appreciated. If not, a comment to let me know what you didn't like about it would be helpful

Note:
These are not hinges, they are standard solar panel blocks. They do not track the sun, rotate on their own, or rotate on demand. The angle of these panels is fixed, so these blocks are mostly just for use as a battery tender (their intended purpose), or for decoration

Thanks:
  • My lovely wife for buying me the phone charger that I used for the texture
  • Digi for his help with the solar panel orientation
  • Me for always forgetting to turn my ship off when landing on a platform and coming back to a dead battery

Yeah, it was a tough choice in the battle of realism vs utility, but at the end of the day, it wasn't even working for what I designed it for, so I had to compromise, a bit.

Yep, ripped straight out of the real world, minus the noisy texture that I couldn't capture with a camera. The charger is actually still hanging in there, so it ended up lasting longer than my stint of SE modding.

Yes, you are absolutely correct. Even with two of my downgraded panels (1600W), you have to switch the batteries to charge only, as a rover with nothing other than wheels and a cockpit draws more than this while sitting still. Realistic, sure, but a level of nuisance that most people don't want to deal with. Also, my wife and I got a chuckle from your credit to your wife for the charger to take pictures of. 🙂

@[W] Wolfgang Oh, that makes sense. I originally had the small grid panels generate significantly less power, but they were too weak to really even keep the batteries running on their own, so I bulked them up considerably. They probably are a little overpowered, now, but I didn't want to coat every surface in panels, so I settled on the current power output. There probably won't be another update for a while, so the .sbc files should be safe for the foreseeable future.

I actually adjusted it down, (so the small grid single panels were only 800watts), to be the same per square area.

Sure thing, it's always nice to see people still using these. Modding SE is a pretty intricate process, so it was a fun opportunity to get to work with it again, as well.

Thanks again. Appreciate your lack of sleep and hard work!

@[W] Wolfgang just a heads-up, I released a separate version of the mod with twice the power output across the board.

@Acouthyt I added some armor panel blocks that are airtight. I tested them out and they were airtight, but let me know if you have any issues with them.

@[W] Wolfgang I didn't expect this update to take me all night, but since I need to go to work in less than six hours, I'll have to postpone making a separate mod with higher power output. I'll try to get that added tomorrow if I have time.

@Acouthyt I'm taking a look at these. It looks like those standard panels were not airtight by design. I still have the original files, so I'll make some armor panels, as well. Just a heads-up, it could take a while. It looks like my SEUT is way out of date, and last time it required some changes to make it compatible. It's also been quite a while since I've worked with these tools.

@[W] Wolfgang I'm glad you're enjoying them. I've gotten that request a few times, now, so I'll probably end up making a separate mod with more powerful panels.

I adjusted the wattage to match the output per area of the stock blocks, but the base mod was exactly what I needed. Thank you!
