Description
Golem, the mighty stone statue that guards the temple deep in the jungle.


Well, this one has been a trip. Started on July 1st, I've been hammering away at this guy for almost 4 weeks now. He's pretty much smashed my previous records work times on the other bosses. I went in fairly naive about how much work he was going to be. How foolish I was.

Despite not having much in the way of articulation, he features a lot of details. Most bosses tend to be 40/60 when it comes to model/texturing time, but this ended up being the opposite. A lot of the details had to be sculpted and meticulously topologized to get it looking right. The texture, on the other hand, was largely simple stone and glowy textures. He's actually got more triangles than Moon Lord, but that's mainly due to the torso and head having so many cracks and crevices.

This boss took a lot out of me. I'll be taking a break for a month and then resuming in September.


Notes


-Golem features both phases. Phase 1 is the "head" model. Phase 2 is the "power core" model.

-The skins toggle the glowing emblems for the different phases. Phase 1 uses lights on. Phase 2 has lights off.

-There wasn't a lot to go on with Golem in terms of how he operates, so I inferred that his power core extends outward from his torso in the second phase. By default the power core is extended, but you can use the power core bone to push it back into his torso. His torso has been designed to house the core completely.

-You should be able to animate the head model popping off the torso with the power core extending, if you wish to simulate the changing of phases.

-His joints are rigid, and should be animated along only one axis. The bicep should rotate around the shoulder, and the bicep should rotate around the bicep. Think rock-em sock-em robots.

-Golem turns his head 90 degrees in game to face players when launching fireballs. I did not design this model to accomodate that, so expect some weirdness or clipping.

-Golem's head features a jaw and fireball_turret bone. The jaw extends downward to expose the turret. The fireball turret can be aimed around from within the mouth.

-The "_head" model is the second phase of golem's detached head. It features a rotary jet with energy thrusters that animate.

-The thrusters on the head model have an idle animation that vibrate the jets if you wish to use it.

-The fists, by default, are mounted directly on the model. If you want to use the chain fists, you'll have to add those in separate, bind them to the hand bone, and then hide the existing hands using bodygroups.

-The fist chains feature a lot of bones for each link in the chain. Once you've bound link0 to the hand bone, you can zero out the rest of the chains to collapse the chain into the arm. You might also want to move the link0 bone back into the forearm a little to hide the clipping that occurs when all chains are bunched up on top of each other. Extending the chain for animation purposes is as simple as using One on each link.

-The fist chain features a bodygroup to swap left and right-handed fists.

-I did not create the fireball, the lazer(you can probably use the twins lazer), and the summoning platform due to time constraints.

I do not intend to do Wall of Flesh, as he's an oddball that doesn't translate well to 3D.
