Skyrim SE - Help for Your Modded or Vanilla Game
Von Vlad 254
Skyrim's been out since 2011, SSE since 2016, and was upgraded in 2021. So with several versions of the game and much of the available info outdated it's understandable if a new user becomes confused and overwhelmed when researching a problem with their game. This guide has sifted through both the old and new and compiled the most relevant information that applies in 2024 specific to what very well may get your game back in good health. Information for all mod managers

In this Guide you'll find help for both your modded and vanilla game issues. The information is designed to save you the time of digging and sorting through 13 years of info. Find the section related to your issue, evaluate, then implement if you feel confident in doing so. Feel free to ask in the forums if you have any questions.

This guide is categorized alphabetically

First Things First

DO NOT start nily willy removing mods and changing settings when experiencing issues with your game, especially if you are mid-playthrough (read). Not only is this destructive but let's first see if anything in this Guide is related to your issue, then if you still need help start a thread in Steam's SSE Forums & we'll try and track down the culprit. The same can be said for uninstalling & reinstalling your game unless you are going to perform a proper "clean vanilla reinstall" of which I have a guide for that as well.

Afterwards, if the problem has not been solved, we'll help you decide if you need a clean vanilla reinstall or not. Because depending on the culprit, tearing everything down without knowing what you are doing can and will cause more problems immediately or down the road.

At the end of the guide you'll find some information on what you'll need to ensure you receive the proper help in the Steam Skyrim SSE Forums should you need to seek help there. We have some of the most informed folks over there who if they do not know how to help you they will tell you and usually find someone who can. Enjoy.

Before you dive into this guide for answers let's make some minor checks
First thing to check if your modded game is crashing
is that you are not over the 255 plug-in limit

Due to the way Skyrim handles FormIDs there is a 255 plugin limit (250 really). FormIDs are 8bit strings, the leading two bits are used to indicate the source plugin. Starting at 00 and ending at FF. FF is reserved for items dynamically created in the game. Therefore there is a max of 255 individual plugins. The 255 Plugin limit is because plugins are loaded in a 32bit HEX dictionary of sorts. The amount of records the game can run is 4,294,967,295 , which translates to FF FF FF FF in HEX. So if you've used the console to spawn in items and you type in the code for a specific item like 00039BE7 ? That item is in the first Plugin in your list, aka Skyrim.esm . A plugin in the 255 plugin slot would be using FF000000 to start off, and let's say it had an armor piece with the code FF0004B8 . Hope that cleared things up on the technical side. Skyrim SE comes with 5. Skyrim.esm, Update.esm, Dawnguard.esm, Hearthfires.esm and Dragonborn.ESM, leaving 250 available for use by the player. Exceed 255 plugins and your game crashes. So if this is the case you must reduce the number of plugins and there are a few ways you can do this. One way is to esl flag certain plugins using xEdit. See that section later in this guide which includes a video by Michael of GamerPoets.

*Second thing: you'd be surprised how many have borked their game using Console Commands

Also make sure your resolution is properly set

*And DONOT remove mods mid-game unless you know exactly which type of mods can safely be removed or you will break your game. Don't fight common knowledge.

With the above out of the way scroll through this guide and you should find your issue.
And if you need further help start a thread in the Steam's Skyrim Special Edition Forum or if you know the mod causing your issue ask on it's Nexus mod page.

NOTE: There is a Glossary of Terms for Skyrim located at the end of this guide.
Two Important Mods

A Note Going Forward:

Modding is not plug-n-play - sometimes either is vanilla Skyrim

Look at this as preventative maintenance for your game.

I'm not saying this is your current problem
But these 2 mods are so Important - even if you don't want mods
(Btw, you'll still get achievements with this setup - modded or vanilla)

Why are you including "preventative maintenance" here, my problem is now ?
Because every new game you start from now on should include these 2 mods and their requirements. Having them installed from the start of a new game will give you maximum results.

Ok fine, but this looks complicated, why so much reading?
Simple, if you're reading this you have never used these 2 mods. Many people don't take the time to understand why they need these mods so they never install them. The installation of these 2 mods including their requirements takes 10 minutes (maybe 15 your first time). So there is nothing complicated here at all.

So Let's address these 2 mods before we begin getting in to the good stuff
And of course Feel Free to skip this important info:

Skyrim is a great game but it's also common knowledge that it has its share of bugs
Not to mention the engine's limitations. One mod fixes numerous bugs, the other addresses engine problems and turns achievements back on. So set-up your game for added piece of mind.

It's all about the experience
So if you are reading this you most likely are having problems with your modded or even unmodded game. You can play the game without them but even if you're strictly playing for fun (hopefully we all are) these 2 mods if nothing else will make your game experience more enjoyable and you won't even notice they are there (which means they are doing your job).

When people talk about "must have mods" or the "best mods" many times we can take those words with a grain of salt. Besides, as the saying goes "one man's ceiling is another man's floor", one might ask, "the best for what?". Combat? Animations? Landscape? Graphics? But what looks or plays well for one individual may not necessarily be for another. That said we all probably all would like to eliminate as many bugs as possible and have as stable a running game as we can (there's that fun thing again), all the while not losing the ability to earn achievements (very important to some).

Q: Why do I keep hearing about an Unofficial Patch and a Engine Fix mod?
The general rule or common knowledge among veteran modders is that you should include the "Unofficial Skyrim Special Edition Patch" (USSEP) in every load order you put together. The vast majority also would not play without "SSE Engine Fixes". What do these two mods do? A long list is included on each respective mod page so this is best answered by at least scanning both mod pages info because between the two of them they fix and patch numerous "bugs". What constitutes a bug? Ahh, this happens to be the first question on Arthmoor's (USSEP) FAQ page[www.afkmods.com] so I'll copy & paste that answer right here: "This can be anything from a quest that won't advance a stage when it should, to a typo in a book, and pretty much everything in between."

The in between covers a ton, everything from time scale and water flow to False Save Corruption bugs, FPS issues, and much more.

Many times a good mod is made and never needs updating. This is not the case with the USSEP but for good reason. As you might imagine Arthmmor (MA), is almost constantly updating this mod. As I type this the USSEP was last updated one week ago today.

Detailed Article on the USSEP by smr1957
Unofficial Skyrim Special Edition Patch (USSEP) - A Must Have

So with all that out of the way
I would (and do) include these two mods in all my load orders going forward. Can you install these mods in your existing game? That's also a FAQ and the answer is yes although depending how far along you are in the game you may miss out on some fixes.

It's recommend to read the details on the Nexus mod pages of both mods discussed here.

Still wondering how important the USSEP is to your load order?
Any time time you are reading about a quest in the uesp stop and look down in the bugs section and notice how often you see one or both of the following:
"This bug is fixed by version X.X of the Unofficial Skyrim Patch."
OR
"This issue has been addressed by version X.X.X of the Unofficial Skyrim Patch;"

2 mods = 5 ?
Yes, including requirements.

IMPORTANT: technically there are two (2) mods we are speaking of in this section but one of the two (SSE Engine Fixes) has requirements so the number technically becomes 5. See list below:

1. Unofficial Skyrim Special Edition Patch[www.nexusmods.com]
A comprehensive bugfixing mod for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - Special Edition. The goal of the Unofficial Skyrim Special Edition Patch (aka USSEP) is to eventually fix every bug with Skyrim Special Edition not officially resolved by the developers to the limits of the Creation Kit and community-developed tools, in one easy-to-install package.
For those interested in what the USSEP addresses see the version history[www.afkmods.com]

2. SSE Engine Fixes (skse64 plugin)[www.nexusmods.com] fixes various issues with the SSE engine.
Alternate Download: Github[github.com]
*Requirements:
3. SKSE64[skse.silverlock.org] Check for your game version!
4. Address Library for SKSE Plugins[www.nexusmods.com] Check for your game version!
5? Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2022 [support.microsoft.com] which you very likely already have it or earlier versions. DO NOT uninstall older versions. FAQ page [answers.microsoft.com] Do I really need all those files? A: Yes you do and if you delete even one of them some program associated with it will stop. (The files are each so small it would not free up any noticable space anyway)
FAQ: How do I Determine if I have Microsoft Visual C++ 2019 Installed on my PC?
A: Open "Add and Remove Programs" and look for Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable. The installed versions will be listed there.
1. Turn Off Updates
How to Make Sure Your Game Will Not Update on 11/11/2021
(until you're ready)

The Following is one of the "Future Proofing" steps you need.

This should be done everytime you use SKSE64
Once you start using SKSE64 you will ONLY be launching SSE via the SKSE64 launcer.
Accidentally launching from your Library (.exe) must be avoided from now on.

However your game Must Not update either.

The following steps will ensure Steam does not your automatically update Skyrim SE:
1. Go to your Steam Library & find "The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition" in your games list & Right Click on it
2. Scroll down to "Properties" then click on the "Updates" tab at the top.
3. Under Automatic Updates use the dropdown and select the option to "Only update this game when I launch it".

Because you will only be launching Skyrim SE through the SKSE64 launcher your game will not automatically update and that is exactly the way you want it otherwise you will have to stop playing your game until everything updates and that could take from days to a week.

The updates are really useless as all they usually do is update new content for the Creation Club (CC) and even if you want to use CC content you will have to wait until the mods that depend on SKSE64 are updated as well as the update for SKSE64, so why not be able to play your game until then.

Once again, running the game through any default methods (Steam) will update the game so NEVER DO THAT. It is always possible that you will make a mistake or Steam will somehow update the game. There are a couple of ways to back things up in case this happens. For now simply turn off the updates as described above.

Next
Make a Backup of your game
This should have been done on your initial Installation of SKSE64 and if not do it now.

The video in the next section (below) by Gamer Poets explains why this is important, and shows you one of the ways to backup your game as well. Highly Recommended to watch!
2. Backup your Game's EXE's
First do this
Bethesda does update the game (AE is coming) whenever there is a Creation Club update. On top of that it is always possible that you will make a mistake or Steam will somehow update the game. There are a couple of ways to back things up in case this happens. For now simply turn off the updates to only update when you launch the game (I set my game updates to a time when I know I'll be off-line) Remember: We only launch Skyrim thru SKSE64.

The following video by GamerPoets explains why this is important, and also shows you one of the ways to backup. Highly Recommended
https://youtu.be/3gAiLABNoIA
SkyrimSE.exe Auto-Backup (by CDante) [www.nexusmods.com] Does not work for Game version 1.6.xxx - Basically just back up your SkyrimSE.exe and your SkyrimSELauncher.exe which are both located in your Skyrim SE game directory.
This tool will automatically store your different versions of SkyrimSE.exe files in backup folders. Now you will always have a backup of your executable in case you unintentionally updated your game via Steam. Requires SKSE64. - (This is the mod we spoke of in a previous section)
https://youtu.be/5LjI56ZINWM
3. Update slipped thru? No worries
Rollback

If you get caught out by the automatic update on 11 November, or if you simply decide you want to downgrade to Skyrim 1.5.97 (this the latest game version at the current point in time), but you did not make a backup, then you can download the older EXE from a Steam depot using the Steam console.

To do so:

1. Press your Windows key + R
2. Type "steam://open/console" (without the quotation marks) in the input field and press Enter
3. Steam will now open and you should see a "CONSOLE" Rider at the top next to your Steam username.
4. Navigate to the Steam console and type in:
"download_depot 489830 489833 2289561010626853674", without the quotation marks and hit Enter
5. This will download SkyrimSE.exe version 1.5.97 to the folder specified in the download completion message.

6. Navigate to that folder and copy this SkyrimSE.exe and overwrite the one in your game folder.
7. Make sure to now set your game to only update when you launch it as described above.

And that's it, this way you will stay on the current version of the game and ensure compatibility with SKSE dependent mods - at least for the time being and according to what we know at this point.

3:0000065432 (on game launch)
Application Load Error 3:0000065432
When attempting to launch certain games through Steam. Most often reported with Doom, Fallout 4, Skyrim and other games published by Bethesda although there seems to be confirmed occurrences with other games from different publishers.

Check the following
  • Check if Anti Virus is interferring
  • Verify Integrity of Steam Files
  • Close Background Tasks
  • Reinstall the Steam Launcher
  • Reinstall Skyrim SE
  • *Still having issues? Move the game out of Program Files
*Windows User Account Control (UAC) is very protective of anything inside either of the 2 Program Files folders which is where Steam installs your games by default. This is fine for an unmodded game but once you start adding mods, hence altering the files in those folders, UAC can get finicky.

Some users may never have an issue but many will so we simply install the game on another drive or at the very least outside of Program Files (this includes Program Files x86 as well).

See the "Moving Game/Steam Location" section of this guide.
1.1.47.0 Game version?
If your version of Skyrim SE shows as version 1.1.47.0

Try changing your default language to English.

If that does not fix your issue switch to another language and back to English.

254 Plugin limit
There's a 254 esm/esp limit. (non esl flagged esps) because both FE and FF are used by the engine

Planning on installing more than 254 plugins?

Anniversary DLC (Removing)
The following information is in relation to the vanilla base game (unmodded) Skyrim SE
Yet there is information included regarding mods because I don't want new mod users that might read this getting the impression you can simply remove this or any other content (mods) from your game and then expect your game to work properly. For more on CC content read this.

I also want vanilla users to have a better understanding of removing content from an ongoing game. Now if you already understand all of that there might not be a reason for you to continue with this particular section.

Modding, modding never changes
When it comes to the basics of modding this game, because many mods depend on certain content, you of course need to pay close to attention to base and DLC content. However vanilla users must also be aware of what they can and can not remove and why.

So if you're wanting to remove the Anniversary DLC content from your game while that's fine for a vanilla playthrough it's an entirely different story for a game you intend to add mods to.

In order to NOT confuse things with a wall of text (the section is already larger than intended) this section is in reference to playing Skyrim with zero mods added to your game or added in the past.

Base Game
Once Skyrim Special Edition updated on 11/11/2021 the base content of the game included four (4) creations from Bethesda's Creation Club which are; Fishing, Saints & Seducers, Rare Curios, and Survival Mode. This content is included in a Free update of the base game. The important thing here is the data is also included in either the update.esm or Skyrim.esm (or both) so we should leave those 4 CC items as is.

Anniversary DLC
Bethesda also released the new Anniversary DLC on 111/11/2021 which is a package of an additional 70 Creation Club items. This DLC is available through purchase.

So if you do NOT intend to add any mods to your game then it is safe to remove the Anniversary DLC from the Base Game but you should not attempt to remove content from the base game.

The following must be done on a game that is not in progress which means you need to start a new game afterwards. Otherwise if you have existing saves you will first have to properly clear your save and application data then uninstall/reinstall the game, then proceed.

Now that we hopefully have a better understanding let's get to it:
From your Steam Library, right-click The Elder Scrolls V Skyrim Special Edition, select DLC, and check or uncheck The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Anniversary Upgrade.

OMG it's that easy?! Why didn't you just get to the point?
People confuse the fact that any company, including Bethesda is *not going to post instructions in relation to a game that is or was modded, or that might be in the future. Sure they are fine with you modding Skyrim but of course only provide support the base game and official DLC.
*As is the case here[help.bethesda.net]
AntiVirus & Launch Problems
ANTIVIRUS SETTINGS

Antivirus and Firewall
If you have enough space to save your game, check your antivirus and firewall to see if it is blocking any files from being created for Skyrim (For some antivirus applications, you may need to whitelist both your Save and Skyrim folders).

First try turn off Ransomware:
Start > Settings > Updates and Security > Windows Security > Virus protection > Ransomware protection -> turn it off.

Your saves are saved to this folder by default:
C: Users\your pc's name\Documents\MyGames\Skyrim Special Edition

Adding an Exclusion (Whitlisting) to Windows Security
The 2 files you need to esnure are whitelisted (excluded) from your antivirus / firewall are SkyrimSELauncher and SkyrimSE.

By default install these 2 files are located here:
Steam\steamapps\common\Skyrim Special Edition. (see below if you need help)
However Steam should be moved outside of Program Files (or at the very least your game should be moved).

Follow These Steps
Go to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Security > Virus & threat protection
(might look different for your version: settings>update and security>Firewall & Network protection>Allow and App through Firewall)
Under Virus & threat protection settings, select Manage settings, and then under Exclusions, select Add or Remove. Select Add an exclusion, and then select from files, folders, file types, or process. source: microsoft (windows 10) [support.microsoft.com]
Note: might look slightly different for you. Here's an example:
1. Windows Security | 2. Firewall & network protection | 3. Allow an app through the firewall |
4. Find "The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition 5. | Change your settings (if needed) | 6. OK

Note: this might even be a good time, while you're in there, to look under "Notifications" and select "Notify me when Windows Defender Firewall blocks an app". This way anytime a new app gets blocked you can decide. Only do this if you feel you will be careful enough not to just let everything thru.

If you are using BitDefender, follow these steps:
  1. Go into the ''Protection'' tab, then ''View Features''
  2. In the bottom right under ''Safe Files'' select ''Application Access''
  3. Ensure that Skyrim is checked ''Allowed''

Archery & aiming
This information is usually in my load order guides

A question we often hear:
Why does archery in this game seem so "off"?

I always ADD these lines
to your Skyrim.ini file, they work great. If you are not sure how to edit the file check the video down below in which Gopher was kind enough to explain how to do it (the video was made for Skyrim, same settings for Skyrim SE). You need to add these lines to your Skyrim.ini file, which is located in /Documents/My Games/Skyrim Special Edition/
(always backup Skyrim.ini before editing):

[Actor]
fVisibleNavmeshMoveDist=12288.0000
[Combat]
fMagnetismStrafeHeadingMult=0.0
fMagnetismLookingMult=0.0
f1PArrowTiltUpAngle=0.7
f3PArrowTiltUpAngle=0.7
bForceNPCsUseAmmo=1
Note: If you don't have an [Actor] and/or [Combat] section in your Skirim.ini file already, just add them (after [General] section for example).

Gopher talks about this (and more) in this video https://youtu.be/mC8l-7xv4FM
Bashed Patch (Creating w/Wrye Bash)
Ursprünglich geschrieben von smr1957:
For creating a Bashed Patch, you will need to use Wrye Bash:
https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/6837

Once you have that, do the following:

Creating the patch:
Sort your load order with LOOT or your Mod Manager's built in version of LOOT.
Open Wrye Bash.
Wrye Bash has created a file Bashed Patch, 0.esp to end of your load order. This load order is visible in your left hand panel of Wrye Bash.
Right click Bashed Patch, 0.esp with your mouse. Select Rebuild Patch...
In the large pop-up box that opens (Update Bashed Patch, 0.esp) uncheck everything EXCEPT, in the left hand pane, Leveled Lists. LEVELED LIST should be the ONLY box checked in that entire pop-up. Checking any other boxes WILL create issues in the game.
Wrye Bash may ask if you want to merge certain mods to include them in the Patch - DO NOT MERGE THEM!
Let patcher to run. Close the application once it is finished.
You are now finished. Make sure that ESP file created is active in your load order.

See the following for additional information as to creating the Bashed Patch and ensuring that everything that should be in it, is:

The Bashed Patch should always be at the very bottom of your load order, after everything else, unless you are an advanced user and know (not just think) what you are doing.

BodySlide and Outfit Studio

First you'll need the mod if you don't already have it:
BodySlide and Outfit Studio[www.nexusmods.com] An easy to use tool for customizing bodies and outfits, creating new bodies and outfits, and converting outfits between body types. See FAQ on mod page

FYI Note:
Outfits replace the body, they do not go on top of it so to speak. That is why if you use all parts of a fully-body-covering outfit it looks good because the body shape has essentially been turned into whatever body the outfit was made for. The issue comes with more revealing outfits or outfits that don't cover every inch of the body, where you'll see the textures on the body messed up. Also, when you don't use all parts of an outfit you might see hand/ankle seams or even huge gaps. You can't for example simply ignore that CBBE and UNP bodies are differently shaped).

Here's a Bodyslide: Guide and Tutorial[wiki.nexusmods.com] from the Nexusmods/Vortex knowledge base

The Following is from the above link which contains a very lengthy, detailed explanation of what Bodyslide is an its function. However if all you want is to quickly get some new shapes and bodies, the process is simple:
Quick Setup
1. Install CBBE and Bodyslide - make sure you install all Vanilla Armors.
2. Open Bodyslide and Select CBBE Body.
3. Select any Preset (or not) and adjust the sliders as you wish.
4. Click "Group Filter" and check everything. To make sure this works click Outfit/Body and ensure you have at least 50+ items there.
5. Click Batch Build and resolve any conflicts
See the above "Bodyslide: Guide and Tutorial" link for an in-depth explanation.

Great "in a nutshell" tutorial by Avrie on using Bodyslide
First let's define some basic terms
Mesh: A 3 dimensional wire frame "shape" Think of it as a series of stick figures that when combined create the shape of an object, or the girders that support the facade of a building. Without the "frame" all of those beautiful 4k and 8K textures would just be puddles of color on the ground

Polygons: (in our lingo) The number of triangles used in a mesh to describe a curve. When we say "High Poly Head" on a mod it means that it has a lot of triangles, therefore a much more natural curves than a low poly head.

Texture: What you actually see in game. Must be assigned to, and wrapped around a mesh to appear in game.

Now having gone over the basic definitions, let's apply it to a body in game.

A body mesh is basically a glorified 3 dimensional stick figure.

Skin textures, eye textures, hair textures, brows, beards, tattoos, warpaint... Etc. are all textures applied to the body mesh.

Phase 2... In steps Caliente and changes all the rules. Let's look at CBBE and Bodyslide.

CBBE ... Caliente's big booty edition. A program not a mod

Allows you to adjust the size and shape of the actual body mesh. Not the part you see, the frame itself. This is the program that caters to all the adolescent fantasies out there and the reason most of the eye candy followers are running around with their breasts in a wheel barrow. This is the program that allows you to change the default shapes... a little thinner, a little bustier, wider hips ... Ect.

Once you either choose one of the default body shapes, or customize your own, that becomes your "default body"

Now we switch over to Bodyslide... This is another program not a mod. This program allows you to take any clothing or armor converted to work with Bodyslide ... this is where the "CBBE conversion files" come into play. The purpose of Bodyslide is to adjust the clothing and armor mods to fit "YOUR CUSTOMIZED MESH"

The idea being your default "CBBE slim" of Vanilla NPC has a "B" cup size. But you chose "CBBE Curvy" or created a custom body that has say a C cup size or better. If you put your NPCs into an outfit designed for CBBE Slim you end up with a predictable wardrobe malfunction ... as in the clothing can't contain the body mesh.

Bodyslide ... It will take that "cbbe Slim" outfit, and make it perfectly fit your curvy custom mesh. In plain english. It replaces the default mesh of the outfit with your chosen default body mesh. So now that CBBE slim outfit perfectly fits a CBBE Curvy body. It's that simple.

When I said, choose your default body... that would be either the one you created or one of the defaults supplied by CBBE

Then you pull down the "groups" menu, select choose groups, and pick the outfit that needs a good Tailor... in this case The guards armor replacer "CBBE conversion mod"

Let's assume you decided on CBBE Curvy as a default body...

On the pulldown for Outfit/body you select whether you want a standard body, a physics enabled body, or the special body (The last one is geared towards adult mods)
Let's assume you want the standard body. So you would choose the "CBBE Body"

The preset is a pre-defined custom shape for that body. This is where any of the hundreds of "body presets" we see everyday on the nexus would be selected if you installed one.

You would select the NordwarUA guard armor conversion mod under the pulldown that says "Group Filter: Under choose groups, you pick clothing/armor mod that needs to be "fitted" then hit the batch button...

What Bodyslide will do in the background, is remove the original mesh from the outfit and replace it with your custom body mesh/preset. When an NPC wears the outfit it will be tailored to fit the new mesh correctly.

WARNING... if you have outfits with physics version as well as normal version you will need to wade through all of the outfits and select the version you want installed... outfit by outfit one at a time. Bloody PITA but you only really do it when you first add outfits

That's it in a nutshell... it would be easier to walk you through it with the program open and you using it, but as I said, it isn't difficult, and after you've done it once or twice you'll just take it for granted."

OBody
SKSE plugin that automatically distributes all installed bodyslide presets to NPCs, lets you select and apply bodyslide presets to yourself or NPCs with one button, edits clothes to fit bodyslide-morphed bodies, and more. Works for males too!

Changing HOT KEYS
Key codes are numeric values that correspond to physical keys on the keyboard but do not necessarily correspond to a particular character. For example, the A key on the keyboard produces the same key code when pressed, even though its character code might be 65 (uppercase A)or 97 (lowercase a), depending on whether the Shift key is down at the same time. Key codes are not influenced by modifier keys. Character values (see Appendix A) may be read from the keypress event, while the key values, including navigation and function keys, are available from keydown and keyup events. The following table lists all keys on a typical U.S. English keyboard and their corresponding key codes.

Cloud / One Drive (Saves)

For important info an Auto & Quick saves see the next section of this guide

You can try this from Microsoft first and if you still have issues then the method described below is tried and true: Turn off, disable, or uninstall OneDrive[support.microsoft.com]

Special thanks to Wolfpack for providing the following information:
If you are running into an issue where you are unable to; save games, see your previous saves, launch game past the main mnu, or having trouble with your INI files not being updated with your Options or BethINI settings, one of the first things you should do (if you are on a PC) is check (1) whether you have Microsoft's OneDrive turned on, and if so, (2) whether OneDrive is using your /Documents folder to sync with OneDrive. The way to know for sure is if you see something like the below path when you open your Document folder and click in the top:

C:\Users\<AccountName>\OneDrive\Documents

If this is the case, you need to do a few things if you want to play Skyrim.

Before I get to the fix, understand that OneDrive basically takes over the rights to access folders it syncs, and it's a PITA to get it to stop syncing on those folders or giving over access rights. Skyrim uses the /Documents/My Games/Skyrim Special Edition/ folder for its ini files and game saves, and of course needs to be able to write to that folder and any folders beneath it. OneDrive will fight with Skyrim over doing exactly that, preventing it from writing, and that's why you can't save, see your saves, or write to the ini files.

Sure, you'll find sites telling you how to prevent OneDrive from syncing a particular folder, how to turn off OneDrive, how to set rights on the folder, blah, blah, blah. It won't help. The best solution is to stop OneDrive from syncing your Documents folder altogether, and the way to do that is to remove your Documents folder from OneDrive's clutches. Here's how you do it:

1. Back up your Windows registry: How to Backup Windows Reistry [support.microsoft.com]
2. Right-click the Windows logo at the lower-left corner of the screen, and then click Run.
3. Type regedit.exe and press Enter. If User Account Control window pops up, click Yes.
4. In Registry Editor, browse to the following path: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders
5. Find the registry key for "Personal" (this is where the Documents folder gets set).
Double click Personal and change the "Value data" path to C:\Users\<AccountName>\Documents, replacing "<AccountName>" with the account name you are using on that PC. So if your account is set up as "John," it would be C:\Users\John\Documents. Of course, C: could be any drive you choose.
6. Close the Registry Editor.
7. You'll need to restart File Explorer for the change to take effect -- choose one of the following:
- Restart the process in Task Manager.
- Sign out, and then sign in.
- Restart the computer.

Once done, your Documents folder is just a regular folder on your hard drive, ready to be written to without problems. Of course, you can always set up a separate folder to sync with OneDrive, but it must be in a completely different path, and you'd just need to save files there that you want to back up.

Hope this helps solve a few past and future issues out there -- and feel free to re-use in any guides, this is for anyone who needs the general help. Wolfpack

Regarding Saves in General

I don't use Quick saves and I disable all instances of Auto saves (on rest, on wait, on sleep etc.). I have been burnt before by Auto saves and have also experienced hitting quick save instead of load at least once and, because these things never happen at a good time that can be another problem in itself. Many say they have never had a problem, ok that's fine and that is that person's experience but we also see people in the forums who had they followed this practice they would have avoided the issue and saved their game along with hours of troubleshooting then rebuilding their game from scratch. What I would say to those who use them make sure you are hard saving and doing so often. Don't fight common knowledge.

I don't overwrite my saves, ever. Part of my game management is to periodically delete old saves so that I can stay as close to approx. 20 saves total. I also back up the old saves in a separate folder. When it comes to Auto saves the way they work is to constantly overwrite each other. No thank you, as said I turn them off. Quick saves of course do the same. Autosaves do not have a good reputation in TES games period. They can and do at times simply grab a bunch of information and miss out on other vital bits that can lead to save game corruption or problems in the long run. They also can lead to longer load times.

I've been using this method of managing my saves since back in my console days deleting saves from the game menu. I do the same on pc along with the above info from Wolfpack and have had no save issues whatsoever.

Console Commands
I highly suggest AGAINST using Console Commands unless you know what you are doing

Console Commands should only be used as a last, and final, resort. They should never be used or even mentioned as a first attempt to fix your game. Many times console commands will not fix anything regardless of using them properly. Finally, if a console command is not listed in Wiki don't use it. Use the USSEP and if contemplating using a CC consult the UESPWIKI
UESP Wiki Console Commands[en.uesp.net]
Unofficial Skyrim Special Edition Patch (USSEP)[www.nexusmods.com]

Ilja said it best; Please Read
Ursprünglich geschrieben von Ilja:
Is someone actually still recommending console commands as general bug fixes, despite the threat of bypassing quest triggers and messing up with alias checks?

We had this conversation about 7 years ago. Skyrim SE didn't stop being a Creation Engine game in between.

Don't mess with console, unless UESPWiki lists command as potential solution, which marks it safe(ish) to use in that situation.

I recommend using the Unofficial Skyrim Special Edition Patch. Console commands can not prevent fun things like:
  • In-game(!) save bloat from uncleared faction quests. Yes, you can potentially wreck the save just playing unmodded game. Rare, but plausible.

  • Messed up aliases. 95% of reasons why some NPC is messing around. About 100% of second wave posts saying "I fixed (so to speak) one thing with console, but now these things are broken" happen, because people tried to fix these things with console.

  • Broken AI calls. You can move someone there with your console, but you can't force them to continue the quest. Changing quest stage with console risks bypassing quest triggers again.

  • Script loops. These things are something that BGS should have dealt with themselves. How exactly is someone going to fix them with console?

  • DragonActorScript. I wouldn't actually need to continue this list after that note. In fact, I could have just mention this and leave it here as sole reason to use the patch.

  • Extra: Esbern. Even patch can't fix Esber, but it doesn't stop people from trying to bypass the problem with console. Then they return telling how messed up the Blades part of MQ is. If official patch (released long time ago and merged to both Skyrim LE and SE releases) isn't working, then redo the INI-file and stop breaking things further with console.

That is just a very, very small take of things patch fixes, or why console isn't a good idea. I tried to pick ones that most people reading the thread would understand outright from the reply.
Controller not working
I too play with a controller.

Before we proceed - Did you check the in-game's menu to make sure "Controller" is checked?

If this game is not recognizing your controller:
  1. Go to: C:\Users\Owner\Documents\My Games\Skyrim Special Edition
  2. locate & open your SkyrimPrefs.ini with Notepad
  3. find: bGamepadEnable=1 (make sure it's 1 and not 0)
  4. Launch game and open the >>>Menu>>>Settings >>> gameplay
  5. make sure the Controller box is enabled (ticked)
  6. exit menu & enjoy
If that doesn't work
exit game
go back to
C:\Users\Owner\Documents\My Games\Skyrim Special Edition
delete the 2 (configuration files) .ini files
1. SkyrimPrefs.ini
2. Skyrim.ini
Then Launch the game and open the Menu>>>settings >> gameplay >> and enable controller>>> then exit the menu and play your game.

If needed don't forget to right click on this game in your Steam library and go to the Controller section and find a controller set-up for you.

Converting to: UNP or other UUNP shapes
The Following is from Vyxenne's mini-guide to armor conversion for beginners:

1. Open Bodyslide and press the Outfit Studio button at the lower right
2. Click the New Project button at the top left
3. Use the Body Type Template Dropdown to select your Reference Body Type Template, e.g. "Unified UNP-HDT" or the CBBE equivalent, then click Next
4. Type in a descriptive name for the new Sliderset, e.g. "Scarlet Dawn Armor UUNP-HDT"
5. Browse to the folder containing your armor's meshes and select the high-weight torso mesh, e.g. Skyrim Special Edition\Data\meshes\armor\scarletdawn\scarletdawn_torso_1.nif
6. Highlight the included body shape, e.g. "body" and press delete, confirming that you want to delete it and yes, you know it can't be undone
7. Drag and drop the bold green reference body (e.g. UUNP) to the same position in the partition stack as the included body was in before you deleted it
8. Click on the little eye next to the torso shape of the armor until it turns from a solid to a see-through mesh so you can see the body underneath it
9. Highlight the reference body and use the sliders on the right to match it to the armor. For example, if your armor said it was made for "UNPB," run the "UNPB-High" slider to 100% to make the body take on the UNPB shape, which should match up pretty closely. Now fine-tune the match with the other sliders to get the body as close to fitting perfectly under the armor as possible. You can ignore minor clipping at this point, but you should be able to get a 99% match.
10. Hit File >> Make Conversion Reference and name it the same as the Sliderset with "CR" or "ConvRef" after it to make it clear what it is- so you might use "Scarlet Dawn Armor UUNP-HDT ConvRef" although it really doesn't matter what you name it other than to help keep stuff straight
11. Now highlight the Torso shape and use the brushes above the left-hand pane to fix whatever minor clipping you couldn't fix with the body sliders in Step 9. The main 2 brushes you will use are the "Add" brush which looks like a circle with a nose sticking out one side of it, and the "Subtract' brush which looks like a circle with a bite out of it. If you screw up use Ctrl-Z to undo.
12. Hit Slider >> Conform All
13. Now you only have one slider. Click the Edit symbol (looks like an eye) at the end of it to check for any clipping in the new shape. Fix any that you see.
14. Disable the slider's Edit mode by clicking on the little eye again, and drag it over to 100%
15. Hit Slider >> Set Base Shape and don't panic- your project just went haywire but it's fine.
16. Hit File >> Load Reference and select the same Body Type Template you selected in Step 3
17. Hit Slider >> Conform All again
18. Edit the Low- and High-weight sliders for the shapes you plan to use in-game and fix any clipping you find. If you did a good job in the Step 9 there won't be any clipping, or one or two extremely minor spots here and there. For example, my custom body shape is a combination of UNP and UNPB with several other customizations, so I always edit UNP-Low, UNP-High, UNPB-Low and UNPB-High.
19. Copy any bone weights required. Generally, that would only be the physics bones (Breast L/R, Butt L/R, and Belly) if you are adding "BBP" capability to the armor. I you are not adding physics bones you can probably skip this step since the armor had bones to start with.
20. Hit File >> Save Project As and be sure to UN-check "Copy reference shape into output" if you are NOT dealing with a torso/chest item. Hit OK.
21. Close Outfit Studio, which drops you into Bodyslide. Click the little X's to clear anything from the Group Filter and Outfit Filter dropdowns
22. Use the top-left dropdown to select your default body Type. Mine is "Unified UNP-Special"
23. Use the dropdown under that to select your body Shape- My custom shape is "Vyxenne Slim-ish" but yours might be "UUNP-7B Oppai" or whatever
24. Hit "Refresh Outfits" at the left end of the Outfit Filter field, then type in one or two words from your new SliderSet, e.g. "Scarlet Dawn"
25. Hit the "Batch Build" button at the bottom left. If more than one choce pops up, un-tick the one(s) you are not building. Hit OK and close Bodyslide

Now go in-game and try out your new armor!

Q: Should I remove the other Visual C++ files on my PC?
I don't because Visual C is not an All-in-one file, each version supports different games even different programs that might be on your PC. Not to mention they won’t give you back nearly as much disk space as you expect, and remember they’re not impacting system performance if they’re not being used.

Skyrim Creation Kit Beginner's Guide[levelskip.com] Skyrim Creation Kit is the tool that Bethesda used to create Skyrim. It is also used by modders who make all the wonderful mods that we all love to use. Mods add so much to the existing game—they allow us to explore new lands, wear new clothing, wield new weapons, etc. They also fix bugs and enhance or completely overhaul gameplay elements.

Category: Tutorials[www.creationkit.com] Modding can be a complex and daunting prospect with any tool, and the Creation Kit is no exception. This tutorials section is designed to help you get started regardless of your level of experience and area of interest.

Creating Voice Files/mods
xVASynth 2 - SKVA Synth[www.nexusmods.com] xVASynth is an AI tool for generating high-quality voice acting lines using voices from video games. The app supports hundreds of voices, across dozens of games, and provides pitch, duration, and energy control at per-letter granularity.

CreationKit - Compact Form ID to Light
First note that:
"The engine treats files in a certain way based on their file extensions:

A .esm file extension will always be treated as a master file. The ESM flag will automatically set in memory.
A .esl file extension will always be treated as a light master. The ESM and ESL flags are automatically set in memory.
A .esp file can function as either type of file depending on which flags are set in its file header. If the ESM flag is set, then the .esp is treated as a master file. If the ESL flag is set, it will be treated as a light plugin. If BOTH flags are set, then it is treated as a light master.
It is important to note that as far as the game is concerned, a .esp file with no ESM flag will load as a normal .esp file would. All standard load order procedures apply to them, and any properly functioning mod manager should handle them the same way it does regular .esp files."

Face Discoloration Fix
AKA Black or Dark Face Bug

Load order, load order, load order:

At the heart of almost all dark face issues, is load order. And the more mods you have that change NPCs and overlap (and they do not have to be mods that specifically change NPCs, other mods can overlap as well), the more likely you will have issues - especially if you do not have the experience of using xEdit to spot the conflicts.

For the vast majority of people, the correct advice is to:
1 - adjust your load order
2 - OR - if you are familiar with xEdit, carry forward the necessary edits in addition to adjusting your load order
3 - don't use a lot of difference NPC replacers, and don't mix and match - those are things that require a lot of additional knowledge and experience.
4 - if all this doesn't work get rid of some of your NPC replacer mods.

5 - Bethesda's Creation Kit can fix the problem if you know what you are doing. However the problem is that the Creation Kit cannot regenerate the Racemenu created faces from that mod's original creator. The Creation Kit would recreate the faces with the vanilla character creation sliders. So the regenerated face will look nothing like the NPC was intended by the mod author of the mod you installed. It also regenerates the facetint file so any custom makeup, freckles, warpaints, etc will all be erased. Which is fine for mods you downloaded other than Bijin, Pandorable, Northbourne, ect. A simple follower mod that has vanilla NPC assets would be fine. Not a work of art mod.

So, what to do?

First try moving the problematic mod in your load order below anything that alters NPC's appearance.
Load up your game and check if this worked. If that doesn't work exit your game without saving.

THEN START HERE:
Example & Excellent Quick Fix
If you do not want to deal with the CK or xEdit
FAIR WARNING: Correcting your load order is the proper way to fix a face bug without running the risk of reverting the FaceGen data created by that Mod Author (MA) on any custom characters in your load order. The following mod will most likely fix your problem. I suggest to only use it if you are out of options and have already tried moving affected NPCs down in the load order.

"Face Discoloration Fix" came out late last year and I heard from many users that it worked great but had never tried it as I rarely if ever have this problem (proper load order). So I waited for the right time to test it out.

Recently, while building a mod load order at about the 500th mod I had a dark face bug problem and several mods that altered NPCs. After narrowing it down the problematic mod(s) was/were "RS Children / RRS Children". I was aware of this because I had been testing my load order as I added mods and I also read up on this combination of mods (RS and RSS) so I knew knew these mods used together in a load order could potentially cause a problem.

So I decided this was a good time to try "Face Discoloration Fix", although usually with mods of this type due to facegen issues you end up with the "potato head" syndrome. So I installed it and it fixed the issue without causing the potato head you many times can end up with.

*Face Discoloration Fix[www.nexusmods.com] Eliminates the dreaded "dark face" issue that occurs when the game encounters FaceGen errors. ~Read the mod page

For those comfortable with the Creation Kit:
In the Creation KIt, select the NPC(s) Ctrl-F4. This will generate FaceGen data for the selected NPC(s) and fix the face bug. The data is stored in the folder: meshes/actors/character/facegendata/<your_mod_name> and in textures/actors/character/facegendata/facetint/<your_mod_name>

THE FOLLOWING SECTION IS FOR THOSE THAT HAVE THE WANT & THE TIME TO LEARN

Warning:
This section is ONLY for those willing to Research, Read, & Learn
By now you've probably heard that "Modding is reading" and it is, through research, much research.

Beyond that there are several ways to find the cause and then fix face gen problems based on the tools you use and how versed you are in using those tools (like xEdit and the Creation Kit). Each load order is different as well (this is why mant times it can be difficult for us to help you in the forums - so many factors). But you can learn.

For Example Itmz2010 made a script for xEdit to assist those versed in xEdit:
"Dark Face Issue Reporter"
https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/42133

Another solution is using the SSE Creation Kit (SSE CK) and using ctrl + F to fix FaceGen problems
DarkBrown Face Fix -FaceGen-
https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/21909
which also talks about other fixes.

final thoughts
Research
I suggest reading up on this subject. Start with the link below at the bottom of this section by FIRST reading it's description page and the post section because as the mod author says:

"I strongly advise following the instructions rather than downloading this mod, the success rate of the instructions is far higher. If the mod doesn't work come back and follow the instructions."

In other words; there's more to learn here than simply using the mod/file itself:
Dark Face Fix
https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/10522

Then more research becomes your friend. Load order is the real answer, if not drop the mod.
~Good luck.

FNIS

If you followed my Basic+ Load order Guide you should have the correct version of FNIS and have installed it properly. Either way let's go over it for some common mistakes.

Make sure you download/install the FNIS for Skyrim SE and not the one for Skyrim
Correct Version [www.nexusmods.com]

NOTE: It is GENERALLY and STRONGLY recommended, that you DO NOT INSTALL any of Steam, Skyrim, FNIS in folders that are protected by Windows UAC (User Account Control). These are "C:/Program Files (x86)" or "C:/Program Files" (or their localized correspondents, e.g. "C:/Programme (x86)"). Use root folders like "D:\Games". This way you can avoid serious protection issues, especially when using Mod Managers.

My original set-up worked fine in Program Files and many have reported no issues doing so but for a number of reasons this is not the case for everyone. The best bet is to have it installed outside of Program Files as the note above (taken from the FNIS Nexus mod) page states

After installation and when you are making Shortcuts to Launch your Game:

1. 📂This is the file path when making any shortcuts
SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Skyrim Special Edition\Data\tools\GenerateFNIS_for_Users

2. This what you are looking for

Like the Mod Author says on the FNIS page, "FNIS is a tool, and not a mod, and therefore different from most everything that you find on Nexus. If you are new to modding and using FNIS, it is strongly recommended that you watch one of many videos that explain the use of FNIS". So here you go as it doesn't get much better than Michael of GamerPoets:

Field of View (FOV)

How to change your FOV
Let's use 90 as our example since this is the most popular number I get asked about.
Note: At 16:9, 90 is a good number, but for games set at 21:9, 110 is the minimum.
(I play at 16:9 and use 80). Default is 75.

Always backup your .ini files before making any changes
(I'll use a FOV of 80 as an example)
We will make changes to both .ini files which are located here:
C:\Users\Owner\Documents\My Games\Skyrim Special Edition

First in Skyrim.ini add:
under [Display]
fDefaultWorldFOV=80
fDefault1stPersonFOV=80.0000
Save and exit.

And in SkyrimPrefs.ini add:
under [General]
fdefaultfov=80
Save and exit.

Form 43
I'll give you two point of views that come to the same conclusion.

1. Ever since Skyrim Special Edition's release — and the release of several improperly ported Skyrim Classic mods — the community has paid close attention to form versions, the version numbers embedded into every record in an ESP file. It's widely understood that version 43 is specific to Classic and heralds Doom and Death, while version 44 is specific to Special and is Right and Pure. There are xEdit scripts for scanning your load order in search of any version 43 content, and many authors field complaints from users about such content. Yet scattered findings and observations around the community paint a more complicated picture, and suggest that version 43 content isn't inherently dangerous. continue reading[davidjcobb.github.io]

2. The main difference is that form version 44 has changes in some record formats that are required for SSE to process the mod correctly. They may have coded exceptions to allow their DLCs to ignore this, but that isn't the case with other mods made by users.

Your only safe bet is to make sure that any mod you intend to use in SSE has form version 44 specified in the TES4 header. That's a record block that generally can't be altered to change the form version any other way than saving it in the new CK. Unless some mope does it with a hex editor of course.

Whether people want to believe it or not, yes, there will be problems from using incorrectly "ported" esp files that don't have the proper version 44 header. Up to and including random CTDs. This is something I've experienced personally when I tried to shortcut some of my own work in the early days. Don't shortcut. Do the ports correctly. That doesn't just include the ESP either. The BSA and any loose assets need to be accounted for too. Source

LOOT - upgrading to a new version
LOOT - Load Order Optimisation Tool[www.nexusmods.com] Setting the right load order for your mods is a crucial step to enjoying a stable modded game. The Load Order Optimization Tool (LOOT) can help with that, by providing automated load order sorting that's simple to use and fully customizable.

The following is copied from the Loot Nexus mods page comment section posted by Glanzer:

PROPER UPGRADE STEPS:
1. Before you upgrade, sort your mods by running your current version of LOOT.
2. Exit LOOT and shut down MO2/Vortex.
3. RENAME the current LOOT install directory to something else (e.g. rename D:\Games\Utilities\LOOT to D:\Games\Utilities\LOOT_oldversion). That way you can go back if the new version is problematic.
4. Back up your current %localappdata%\LOOT directory to another location. This will preserve your metadata "just in case."
5. Run the new installer and point it to the LOOT install directory (e.g. D:\Games\Utilities\LOOT). The directory should NOT exist because the installer will create it. Do NOT start LOOT when it finishes and asks you to.
6. Start MO2/Vortex, then start LOOT from within MO2/Vortex and read the popup message.
7. Test the new of LOOT by sorting your modlist. There should be no changes to the sort order.

Merging Plugins
Note: Before you attempt merging plugins: if you have limited experience in using xEdit (for example with conflict resolution), the best advice would be simply to reduce the number of plugins you have.

WARNING! Merging plugins requires experience - a LOT of it! If you are unsure of something - DON'T DO IT. And if you lack experience, then keep things small.

Thanks to cfs111 for his post regarding this, as well!

Recently, I have noticed a large number of people asking about merging mods. I had put this together in answer to a previous question in another thread, and think it worth posting on its own.

Merging mods is just about the last step in the learning process of handling mods and requires advanced planning of exactly how you are going to be constructing your build. The reason for this is that one of the prime requirements for merging mods is that you have a completely stable, nonconflicting game. Every mod that you are going to merge together should be known to work with not only the mods you are merging with it, but also with continue

*Microsoft Visual C++

THIS FILE HAS NOW CHANGED FOR SKYRIM ANNIVERSARY EDITION
(the same new file works for both SSE and SAE)

Double check as this file sometimes does not install properly

Skyrim SE/AE
Visual Studio 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2022 [docs.microsoft.com]

If you recently installed Skyrim SE sometimes a simple reboot will install/fix the problem otherwise I would install the (x64) version first then the (x86) (comes all-in-one) file package on the page that is linked here (all you need for Skyrim SE or AE is the 64 bit). I installed both because I have Skyrim which is 32bit and Skyrim SE of course is 64bit. Plus many programs and games that run on your computer use Microsoft Visual C++ and there’s no easy way for you to tell which programs on your machine require which versions of the redistributables.

IMPORTANT
You can see the versions you have on your PC by going to settings on your computer and then "Apps & Features". You may see several. Do Not remove/delete any older versions of these redistributables. Leave them there as these files are not superseded when you download the next version. When you install software that needs code from the Microsoft visual C+ Runtime, it will install the version it relies on, if it is not already installed. Different software on your system requires different version(s) of this runtime If you uninstall any of these, some software on your system will stop working.
Long story short, these are nothing to worry about, they will not slow your system down and take up little space - best to leave well enough alone for the stability of your system!

FAQ:
Q: Should I remove the other Microsoft Visual C++ files on my PC?
NO. I don't because Visual C is not an All-in-one file, each version supports different games even different programs that might be on your PC. Not to mention they won’t give you back nearly as much disk space as you expect, and remember they’re not impacting system performance if they’re not being used.

Do I really need all those "Microsoft Visual C++" programs?
A: YES [answers.microsoft.com]
Besides, different games and programs on your PC require different versions of Microsoft Visuals C++ so make sure you don't delete the other versions.

IF you already have Visual Studio 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2022 on your PC you'll get a prompt to "repair" the file then say yes to that prompt.

Microsoft Visual C++ REPAIR
Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable Repair and/or uninstall

Most Windows PCs come pre-installed with almost all the necessary packages of Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable. But sometimes, DLL files for some applications can go missing and can cause issues in running them. This usually happens due to newly installed apps or games that are not able to bind with MSVCR files. In such a situation, the best thing to do is to repair Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable as follows:

IMPORTANT NOTE: LOOK FOR THIS FILE NAME:
"Microsoft Visual C++ Visual 2015 - 2022 Redistributable (x64)"
INSTEAD OF WHAT THE IMAGES SHOW

These are the steps

1. Click the Windows key, type Apps & features in the search box, and click on Open.

2. Now, search and locate Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable package.

3. Click on the package and select Modify option shown highlighted below.

(Look for "Microsoft Visual C++ Visual 2015 - 2022 Redistributable (x64)")

4. Click on Yes in the User Account Control prompt.

5. Select Repair in the following pop-up window.

Moving Game/Steam Location

Making sure Steam and/or SSE is NOT installed in the "Program Files " folders.

By default Steam installs games to the "Program Files" folders this is fine if you are NOT modding, so if you are in fact modding your game make sure Steam and your game are on the same internal drive (as must be your mod manager) and if you do not have another internal drive then make sure your games are installed outside of either of the "Program Files" folders. Read on as to why:

Both Windows UAC[www.computerfitness.com] and Windows defender pretty much own and are very protective of any of your "Program Files" Folders. This causes the windows protection system to not play nice with your modding folders. For more info on this look up Windows UAC (User Account Control).

* "UAC’s biggest flaw is that it is too granular. The specificity that UAC applies to computer management is more of a hassle than a help. You can unblock one application but a process started by that application may be flagged. This leads to a lot of frustration and unnecessary action on the user’s part when dealing with UAC." This can throw attempts at modding your game's files a huge curveball and not allow access. With Bethesda and other game studios allowing us access to their games for modding this can be a problem in some instances.

Bethesda first added mod support for "The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind" by releasing their modding tools and a large community has continually grown ever since with "The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim" becoming the most popular Bethesda game for modding, maybe the most popular in all of gaming since "TES: Skyrim Special Edition" was released in 2016. Today many single player games allow modding. The largest site for downloading mods is Nexusmods.com with over 18 million users & over 3 Billion downloads to date. Also, Steam has provided instructions on moving our games. So what to do?

I moved everything meaning Steam and all my Steam games along with it.

Instructions
Move your Game (I would move Steam as well) to another drive or if that's not possible C Drive is fine just as long as it's neither Program Files (x86) or Program Files.

Here's the Link directly from Steam Support on "Moving a Steam Installation and Games"
Moving a Steam Installation and Games

The important thing is that Skyrim is not in Program Files and to make sure it's done properly.
Nemesis
Here we will install the Nemesis[www.nexusmods.com] animation engine

For those not familiar with running Nemesis here are the installation steps:

1. First
Make sure your Windows System Locale is set to English (Start - Windows System - Control Panel - Region - Administrative - Change System Locale - English [United States]), not in another language, or it apparently modifies handling of file names and file paths, which causes Nemesis to gain errors when using it. Nemesis was built to be compatible in an English-based System Locale only (for now).

Requirement (this is not a mod) If you haven't already done so go ahead and install
NET 6.0[dotnet.microsoft.com] We need both the x64 version and the x86 version.

2. Install Nemesis
Project New Reign - Nemesis Unlimited Behavior Engine[www.nexusmods.com] Install with Mod Manager.

3. Now from the top left side of Vortex select "Dashboard" then in the "Tools" section select the plus sign (+) that says "Add Tool" (same area we added SKSE), name it "Nemesis", then select "Target", navigate to your Skyrim Special Edition folder/ Data/ Nemesis_Engine/ and find "Nemesis Unlimited Behavior Engine.exe", select it then select "open", select Save.

4. Run Nemesis
Now open Nemesis from that dashboard shortcut (up top) and once it opens select "Update Engine" you'll get some warnings because we have not yet installed animation mods so this is normal, dismiss the warnings and let the update run. Now select "Launch Nemesis Behavior Engine" and let it run then close Nemesis (x).

5. Now select the "Mods" tab on the left side of Vortex and use the "Deploy Mods" function at the top of Vortex.

The Nemesis Engine is installed and setup.

Important Reminder
Much like FINIS when we add animation mods (later in the guide) we must run Nemesis in the same manner (as steps 4 & 5) after the installation of each animation mod, the only difference is that we will be checking the appropriate box for whatever animation mod we are adding at that time (and we won't have the language step). I'll remind you as we go.

Add-on

"Also, as to ensuring that you have no darkface bug, or to ensure that all changes are being applied, make sure nothing in these categories in the RH pane for individual NPCs is being overwritten in the mod you are using for how you want that NPC to appear:

Categories:
VTCK - Voice
RNAM - Race
Head Parts
HCLF - Hair color
NAM6 - Height
NAM7 - Weight
FTST - Head Texture
QNAM - Texture Lighting
NAM9 - Face morph
NAMA - Face parts
Tint Layers (sorted)

Also, if you wish to keep the outfit that the mod adds (sometimes you may wish to have a different outfit that another mod allocates):
DOFT - Default outfit

If any are being overwritten, forward those entire categories (the line with the category title) to the mod doing the overwriting (just drag and drop)" (Sorry, no citation, probably Old Farts thread)

NPCs - Make Essential
Be careful not to break quests:
Quote from poster:
"It should not break any vanilla quests since I checked every NPC in these lists. What quests they are involved and what is their role. I also did not include NPCs such as Jarls and similar. However, if you want to add or remove anyone, its as simple as commenting out or deleting an entry. Every entry also has the name of a NPC and are sorted by areas, so you can quickly find it by using search function. As always, I recommend using Notepad++ or similar to make your life easier."

Opening Cart Scene Madness

We will need our 2 .ini files here (Skyrim.ini & SkyrimPrefs.ini)

FPS not capped @60 creates this problem so go ahead and cap it. Turn on Vsync in your SkyrimPrefs.ini by finding the setting "iVSyncPresentInterval=1" which is under [Display] and making sure it is set to 1 (not 0).
THEN SET your Skyrim.ini properly for the correct fps under [Havok] fMaxTime=0.01666667

Protect your Game

If you mod your game and use the Skyrim Script Extender (SKSE) these steps will let you play uninterrupted until you're ready to update to the latst version of Skyrim Special Edition:

Step 1: Backup
Save copies of both your SkyrimSE.exe and SkyrimSELauncher.exe (which are located in your \SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Skyrim Special Edition folder) to a backup location/folder.
(you can also backup your 4 .esm's)

Step 2: Change Skyrim SE's update settings in your Steam Library to only update when launched. Then - Never launch Skyrim SE via Steam, only via the skse64_loader and only while Steam is running in the background.
Here's a video by Michael of GamerPoets if you're not sure how to perform the above steps
https://youtu.be/3gAiLABNoIA
What does this accomplish?
By taking the steps outlined above our game will not only remain intact/uninterrupted so we can continue playing until the appropriate mods that were affected by any game updates are updated, we can then, at that time or a time we choose, accept those updates and seamlessly continue playing.

By taking the steps above and then continuing to launch Skyrim SE ONLY thru the Script Extender (SKSE) your existing mods will all continue to work. Once the modding community has caught up with the changes you can then update your mods if you so desire. Some of us have been playing with no interruptions for years simply by following these steps so if you're happy with your current modded game you can choose to never update

Purple Textures
Pink or purple textures typically mean the texture is missing.

Read this entire section before attempting to fix this problem

First know that Texture files are .dds files and Mesh files are .nif so in this section we'll be discussing .dds files.

Purple textures indicate missing or failed to load texture files. ie., either loose .dds files that got culled (rejection of objects of any kind (objects, draw calls, triangles and pixels) that don't contribute to the final image) so they never installed. This would be more common with modded games. Try reinstalling the mod or switching to another mod that retextures the same object.

This also CAN be caused by lack of VRAM. So IF you see random purple objects make sure you have enough VRAM to support your game. One way to test this is to exit your game and then go back in (start up your game) and see if the problem is fixed and if so you may not have enough VRam. Either get a better GPU or Download an optimized texture mod to replace the default textures with lower-res ones that use less VRAM.

Unmodded Games
Verify the integrity of this games files through your Steam Library.
This will fix your problem approximately 50% of the time IF your game is vanilla (meaning no mods installed).
https://help.steampowered.com/en/faqs/view/0C48-FCBD-DA71-93EB
NOTE: Afterwards you'll need to reclean your master files if you've done so in the first place. Also note that verifying your game files will most likely cause your game to update to the most recent/up to date version.

Tracking down the offending mod
I use a mod called More Informative Console[www.nexusmods.com] which edits the UI to show a great deal of additional information on npcs, items, and other objects when the console is opened and is very useful in identifying the culprit in these types of situations. Once the mod is installed (make sure to use the version for your game):
Startup your game. Walk up to one of your purple objects. Go into 1 person view (if not already). Hit the Tilde key (~) to open the game console and then making absolutely sure you
click on the object that is purple. The information on your screen with indicate the last mod that touched that object. Write this information down. Your screen should also show a Form number for the object (like 000123F4, or something), so also write this number down.

Exit your game and either reinstall the offending mod OR, Load up your build into SSEedit. In the form number at the top left, type in the Form number,
SSE will take you to that object. Highlight the object in the left pane if it isn't already selected.
In the right pane, you will see every mod that affects that object. The last one listed to the extreme right of the right pane is the culprit causing the issue.

From here you have a couple options:

Change the mod order so that the offending mod isn't the last mod to effect the object.
or
Open up the .nif from that offending mod in NifSkope and see what texture is suppose the be used, then verify that texture
is actually in existence and loaded into your build.
or
You could uninstall the mod and use another.
RaceMenu
Are you seeing this message ?:
Chargen.dl: le plugin cannot be used with se
nioverride.dl: le plugin cannot be used with se
Continuing to load may result in lost save data or other undesired behaviour
Exit game? (Yes highly suggested)

"DLL Plugin has failed to load correctly. If a new version of Skyrim was just released the plugin needs to be updated. please check the mod's web page"

Yet you seem sure you have the correct version of RaceMenu for SE?
You probably do not.

The SE version contains these files
RaceMenu.bsa
RaceMenu.esp
RaceMenuPlugin.esp
SKSE
-Plugins
--skee64.dll
--skee64.ini

The Oldrim version contains these files:
RaceMenu.bsa
RaceMenu.esp
RaceMenuPlugin.esp
SKSE
-Plugins
--chargen.dll
--chargen.ini
--nioverride.dll
--nioverride.ini

Now you know how to tell the difference
Record Types
(from uesp wiki)

Mod files (Plugin files) are collections of records, which are further divided into fields.

Records generally correspond to objects (e.g., a creature, a game setting, a dialog entry), with the fine details of the object (e.g., health of a creature, a dialog entry test) being handled by the fields of the record. Records themselves are organized into groups.

Saves Corrupted message? - Don't Panic

When I save it shows as corrupt. But when I restart my game I can load the save no problem
Usually this is just scripting engine running wild. Waiting for a moment and opening menu again will show all save files as normal. Many times it's not an actual problem just game being a bit goofy because if your save file is actually corrupted your game will give a pop-up regarding this then discard the save and attempt to create a backup file in your save location.
Save Game Corrupt
Sometimes we'll receive a comment in the Steam SSE Forums that goes something like this:
"About 400 hours into an 800 hour playthrough getting the error
'the save game is corrupt and cannot be loaded' on save load"

SSE Engine Fixes has a setting to avoid this in it's EngineFixes.tomi

Setting `SaveGameMaxSize` in `EngineFixes.toml` to `true` completely and permanently solves the problem.
Serana
Serana is one of those characters you either love or hate which means plenty of folks use her. Since she also can be glitchy I'm placing a a link to the Wiki UESP here because so many do not know or simply forget to look here for answers. Skyrim: Serana[en.uesp.net]

On top of that there is the old fashioned fix for many problems because Sometimes she's playing catch up on her scripts:

  1. Save your game
  2. Fast travel to another cell
  3. Go inside
  4. Save your game again
  5. Wait 24 hours
  6. Find and ask her again
(This works for other scripted events as well)
Screen Tearing
Follow these steps:

Make sure your Graphic drivers are up to date.

Make sure Vsync is turned on in your Nvidia Control panel

Make sure the Hz is the same in your
Desktop settings
Nvidia Control Panel settings

Make sure set "Max Frame Rate" in NVIDIA Control Panel
1) Open NVIDIA Control Panel.
2) Click on Manage 3D settings in the left pane.
3) Click on the "Program Settings" tab in the right pane, and then locate and select SkyrimSE. If you don’t see Skyrim in the list, you need to add it manually. Click the Add button and navigate to your Skyrim folder to select the “SkyrimSE.exe” file.

4) Locate the Max Frame Rate settings in the Control panel list. Click on it and set the FPS you want.
5) Apply Changes

Last but not least
If your monitor supports Gsync make sure it's on

Also see Fix Skyrim Screen Tearing Issue Step-by-Step Guide[mostechtips.com] BUT ANYWHERE it refers to Skyrim.exe LOOK for SkyrimSE.exe instead. Same with anywhere they refer to Skyrim and instead look for Skyrim Special Edition. Everything else is the same.

Skyrim SE Update & Mods
Well it's been over 1 1/2 years since The Anniversary DLC dropped along with the updated SSE 1.6.xxx. Not all mods needed to be updated as a matter of fact the majority did not. However by now the vast majority of mods that needed updating have been updated. Some mods that needed updating however have long been abandoned by their respective mod authors have now been replaced with similar if not better mods .

Bottom Line:
When it comes to the latest version of Skyrim SE, which is 1.6.640, one thing has not changed and that is that you must always make sure any mod with a .dll plugin is compatible with your game version. This means it's business as usual when it comes to modding.

What does the latest version include?
4 Free Creation Club mods have been added as part of the base game:
Fishing
Saints & Seducers
Rare Curios
Survival Mode
And of course the original 3 DLC's remain as part of the base game:
Dawnguard
Hearthfire
Dragonborn

Skyrim SE versions (latest)
BEFORE DOWNLOADING ANY MOD
As has always been the case you should check to make sure the version of each mod you are looking to install on your game is in fact compatible to both your version of the game and other mods installed on your game.

Not sure if you updated?
Go to your Skyrim Special Edition folder in your Steam directory located here \SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Skyrim Special Edition, right click on SkyrimSE.exe, go to the Properties tab. look at the "Product Version":
1.6.640 is the current version as of May 2023.
1.5.97 is the the pre-update version.

Here's a small sample of differences as far as mod versions
Make sure you have the proper version of any mods you add to your game.
v1.5.97 is pre 11/11/2021 and v1.6.640 is the current game version as of May 2023.

SKYUI

This is an easy one
SKYUI is one of the most popular mods in Skyrim with over 30 million downloads between Skyrim LE and SE and is also one of the simplest to install as long as you make sure you are using the SE version for SE and you have downloaded and installed it's requirement SKSE64 and that version must be for SE and not for LE. SKSE is for LE we need SKSE64 which is the SE Version.

So first make sure that you have downloaded and installed the proper version of each mod.
for more info on SKSE64 see the next section of this guide

First of all Load order does NOT matter with SKYUI
Current SE build 2.0.20 (runtime 1.5.97)
Preliminary AE build 2.1.4 (runtime 1.6.342)
  • Make sure you are using the proper SE version of Script Extender (see above): http://skse.silverlock.org If the scripts aren't installed correctly then SkyUI can't detect and use SKSE's functions. (need help installing SKSE64? See the SKSE64 section of this guide).

  • Make sure you have the SE version of SKYUI SkyUI_5_2_SE[www.nexusmods.com]

  • Watch this SKYUI installation video
    GamerPoets
    https://youtu.be/Y3Zif0Bf_9I

MO2 Users: I would download SKYUI using the "Manual" button on Nexus Mods as MO2 has been known to have issues with the FOMOD installer so I would NOT use the "Mod Manager Download" button.

IF and only IF that's all correct/you've done all that, then you DO NOT have SKSE64 installed properly. Period. No further discussion needed.

*Using Mods from Bethesda's in-game mods?
Using mods from the in-game mod's section can be problematic
Goto:
C:\Users\[your name]\AppData\Local\Skyrim Special Edition\plugins.txt
and open plugins.txt (notepad will do).
Ensure your SkyUI is enabled by placing a * to its left as shown below.
*SkyUI_SE.esp
you'll notice all your mods have an *

This fixes the above problem as well:
SkyUI 5.2 SE Plugin with Master Added[www.nexusmods.com]

Specific SKYUI error codes
Error Code 1: The Skyrim Script Extender (SKSE) is not running:
Either Install or re-install SKSE
Re-install SKYUI as it was probably installed incorrectly
OR install the above mod (SkyUI 5.2 SE Plugin with Master Added)
(or try running SKSE64 as Admin)

Error Code 2: SKSE is outdated...

Error Code 3: SKSE scripts are outdated...

Different error causes, but the solution is the same: Install or re-install SKSE, from http://skse.silverlock.org/

Error Code 4: Your Papyrus INI settings are invalid...
One, or more, of your Papyrus INI variables are set to invalid values. There are several tweaking guides and INI generators out there that propagate setting these to out-of-range values. As a result, SkyUI or other event-based mods can start behaving erratically.

To fix this, open My Documents/My Games/Skyrim/Skyrim.ini with a text editor and reset the following values to their respective defaults
[Papyrus]
iMinMemoryPageSize=128
iMaxMemoryPageSize=512
iMaxAllocatedMemoryBytes=76800
You may also have to reset these values in SkyrimCustom.ini, if it exists, which is in the same directory.
For details on the meaning of these settings, see http://www.creationkit.com/INI_Settings_(Papyrus)

Also, in case you think you know better: See these recommendations from a developer who implemented Papyrus.[forums.bethsoft.com]

Error Code 5: Incompatible menu file...
There's another mod that overrides a particular menu file SkyUI is using as well. You'll have to pick one of the two mods or see the fix below. If you want another mod to be able to override certain menu files of SkyUI while keeping the rest, you can disable these warning messages individually in the SkyUI configuration menu (Advanced Section of MCM).
Here's a video (on Error Code 5) of which section to go to for this error. Although this video shows unchecking them all, usually it's the map (first one). You can troubleshoot one by one:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mzBO-eBo-5M
Patch for Map.swf Issue in Skyui[www.nexusmods.com]

Error Code 6: Menu file version mismatch...
The versions of SkyUI scripts and interface files are not matching. This could happen if you manually extracted the SkyUI.bsa archive. Remove any loose SkyUI files from your data folder.

Error Code 7: SKSE scripts have been overwritten...
Either your SKSE scripts have actually been overwritten, then just re-install SKSE (see Error Code 1). Or, if that doesn't fix it, there's an INI setting that stops SKSE and mods in general from functioning. For some reason it may have been set. Verify the following INI setting is set to 1, not 0:
[Archive]
bInvalidateOlderFiles=1

MAKE SURE YOU DOWNLOAD THE SE VERSION FROM SILVERLOCK[skse.silverlock.org]

📌FYI: for a more in-depth look at SKSE64 see my guide SKSE64 HELP FOR SKYRIM SE

📌ATT: Vortex users. You can now install the entire SKSE 64 PKG thru Vortex
https://youtu.be/0prWgeGGnp8
Game won't launch or Game crashes when Launched thru SKSE64
VERY IMPORTANT NOTE: IF you did not launch/run your game at least once thru Steam in order for the game to establish it's registries YOU WILL have problems. ALSO - After installing SKSE64 properly you will ALWAYS launch this game thru SKSE64 - HOWEVER Steam must be running even though you won't be launching thru Steam.

If you recently updated SKSE64 and want to know which mods depend on SKSE64 to launch properly check here:
if you don't know where this folder is Go to;
~Your Steam Library where you launch most of your games
~Right click The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition (listed on LH side)
~Properties > Local Files > Browse Local Files
Now find the Plugins folder which is located here:
SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Skyrim Special Edition\Data\SKSE\Plugins
Look for any .dll file and those will be the mods that you also must update or remove until that mod author updates them. OTHERWISE your game will not launch properly.
Note: Only update each mod if you are using the latest version of SKSE64

Make sure you installed SKSE64 Properly:

SKSE/Trampoline.h(187): Failed to handle allocation request
Thanks to wolfpack for the following information.

For those getting a 187 error, here are some things to troubleshoot:

1. Triple check and thoroughly read and follow ALL the steps in the sticky above, especially the C++ redistributable step (make sure you installed the correct redistributable and rebooted).
2. Ensure you are running skse64_loader.exe as an Admin, and try running it directly from the game folder
3. Check to see if you have special characters in the path to \My Games that may be confusing Windows or SKSE64. Check C:\Users\[username]\Documents\My Games\. If you see any symbols or special characters in the username, consider renaming the username to something simpler..
4. If you have OneDrive installed, and it is syncing your Documents folder, seriously consider uninstalling OneDrive or removing the Documents folder from your synced folders, as OneDrive sometimes does odd things with folder and file entitlements. You'll know you have OneDrive syncing the Documents folder if your path to \My Games reads like: C:\Users\[username]\OneDrive\Documents\My Games\
5. If you have your Steam Library installed to \Program Files (x86), seriously consider moving your Steam Library to another folder, as Windows doesn't like it when programs write to \Program Files. See: https://help.steampowered.com/en/faqs/view/4BD4-4528-6B2E-8327
6. Ensure your firewall and antivirus is not blocking folders or files where SSE is installed (both the \My Games\Skyrim Special Edition\ folder AND the folder where the skse64_loader.exe is installed

This Section Contains Several Fixes So Read it Over

FIRST- Make sure your Audio Drivers are up to date

This also works
Set your Launch settings to play the game in windowed mode with borderless windows.

Verify Integrity
See the section of this Guide titled "Verifying Integrity of Game Files (Steam)"
This often fixes corrupted game files including sound.

Trying Different Audio Formats
Sometimes the issue might be because of the unintentional change in the audio format. You can change the audio format back to what it originally was, very easily. But, sometimes there might be multiple audio formats available for you. In that case, you should try every audio format until your sound starts working again.

These are the steps for changing your audio formats

1. Right click the sound icon on your task bar (right bottom)
Select
(for Windows 10) Sound / Playback devices
(for Windows 11) Sound settings

2. Now select your audio device (which should be default). It should have a green tick beside it
Select Properties / Advanced tab

3. Now, select a format from the drop down list in section Default Format. Select any one you want. Recommend is 16 bit, 44100Hz CD Quality (I use 24 bit 48,000HZ Studio Quality)

4. Click Apply then select Ok
As said go through several settings checking each time whether the audio is working or not.

OR

1. Right click the sound icon on your task bar (right bottom)

2. Choose "Open Sound Settings"

3. Top right hand side choose "Sound Control Panel"

4. Rich click on your device and choose "Properties"

5. Select the "Advanced" tab and then select a format from the drop down list in section Default Format. Select any one you want. Recommend is 16 bit, 44100Hz CD Quality (I use 24 bit 48,000HZ Studio Quality)

Disable Enhancements
Disabling the enhancements for your audio device also solves the issue that you are having. It is a Microsoft’s recommended solution as well.

1. Repeat Steps 1 - 4 (same as above)

5. Select Enhancements tab

6. Check the option that says Disable all enhancements

Let's look at some causes for No Sound in Skyrim
Due to the nature of the issue, there can be several causes creating a sound issue in Skyrim. Some of the issues are but not limited to:

*DirectX not installed properly: DirectX seems to be a requirement of almost every game nowadays. This popular API by Microsoft is a necessity when playing Skyrim and if it isn’t present, you will experience numerous issues. {See The DIRECTX Section of this Guide}
*Computer in Error State: There is another situation where because of your computer being in an error state, the game will not function properly. Here, power cycling your computer helps a lot.
*Corrupt Saved File: Skyrim allows users to save their current progress in the game using a ‘saved file’. If you are loading from the saved file and it is corrupt, you will experience numerous issues.
*Third-party application controls: Another case where you will not hear the sound in your game is where a third-party application has access to your computer hardware and it is turned off the sound.
*Outdated Drivers: This may be one of the most common reasons why you experience sound issues. If the drivers are outdated/corrupt, the game will not be able to send sound information to the hardware.
*Mods: Mods are famous in Skyrim for making the game even more playable. However, since they are third-party, they might inflict issues on your computer and cause bizarre behaviors.
*Skyrim in Linux: This is not a cause; instead, it is a scenario. Mostly users in Linux are unable to hear Skyrim properly because of some conflicting modules in the OS. Fixing these through the command line usually works.
*Sound issues: Another thing which we should not forget is that if the sound settings themselves are not proper on your computer, you will not hear any sound.

you also can move the entire sound effects folder to C: drive
Or simply move the entire sounds folder:

*1. First of download and install Link Shell Extension which can be found here http://schinagl.priv.at/nt/hardlinkshellext/linkshellextension.html

*2. Navigate to your Skyrm/Data folder and look for a file named Skyrim - Sounds.bsa. Copy this file and paste it somewhere on your main drive.

*3. Delete Skyrim - Sounds.bsa from the Data folder

*4. Go back to where you copied Skyrim - Sounds.bsa on your main drive. Right click on it and you should see an option that says "Pink Link Source". Click that.

*5. Go back to your Skyrim/Data folder. Right click anywhere and choose "Drop As" and then "Symbolic Link" You will see your sounds file with a shortcut symbol. You know it works when you do.

Et voila! Your issue should be fixed. What we did is very simple. We kept most of the game files in the same location but moved the sound files to the main drive where Skyrim likes them to be. We then created a link so your Skyrim game can go and get these files in the main drive.

Your Skyrim game doesn't have any sound effects? This fix is for you. The reason it does that is simple but the explanation not much so. Most likely, you have Skyrim installed outside of your main drive or perhaps even on an external HDD. Common Causes:

1) uninstalled some mods
reinstalling the mod(s) or verifying integrity of game cache with Steam.

2) haven't properly sorted your mods (use LOOT)
Let a mod manager choose which files to install if you are unsure

You must always ensure no other mods files overwrites the mod in question's files. If unsure which mod(s) is affecting your load order see "Tip" below.

Check if there is a patch to a mod or a dependent mod (or mod requirement).

Tip: you can narrow down what mod the missing mesh is from by closely and carefully approaching the missing mesh while in game, activate console (you have to use MFG Console for this), click on the missing mesh (be precise) and check the ID. This will give you the master containing the mesh and you can troubleshoot from there.

Steps for Testing
  1. Start with a save that is either vanilla or one that you are 101% sure is safe and had zero problems (ie, USSEP, SSE Engine Fixes, Alt Start ect.) in other words SKSE64 is 100% safe but are you sure it was installed properly? Make note of that save, more importantly all the saves you made after that save because not only will you never use them again, you will be removing them.
  2. Acvtiate 1 - 3 mods at a time and test run SSE
  3. Hard Save EVERY time you successfully complete testing a group of mods
  4. Once you find the suspecting mod make sure you PROPERLY remove it with your mod manager
  5. launch game again and test then Hard Save your game Before Exiting.
  6. Remove bad save(s) you cannot continue using any save that was part of the group that was storing baked data. Why? due to how Skyrim bakes data into saves so any save after the faulty save contain corrupt data & this data *CANNOT be removed (see below for exceptions) - regardless of what others might say.

🚩Now remove the bad save(s) because you cannot continue using any corrupt save that was part of the group that was storing baked-in data. Why? Due to how Skyrim bakes data into saves and so any save after the faulty save has this data and this data CANNOT be removed - regarless of what others might say.

It's literally a fraction of what the patch actually does, and IMO the greatest compliment we can receive is one we've heard so many times before: "I don't even notice I've installed it". Mainly because the one time someone hasn't, they ran smack into some obscure thing we fixed and were grateful we had.

Virtual Memory
This page is in development

What is virtual memory?
Virtual memory is a memory management technique where secondary memory can be used as if it were a part of the main memory. Virtual memory is a common technique used in a computer's operating system (OS).

Virtual memory uses both hardware and software to enable a computer to compensate for physical memory shortages, temporarily transferring data from random access memory (RAM) to disk storage. Mapping chunks of memory to disk files enables a computer to treat secondary memory as though it were main memory.

Today, most personal computers (PCs) come with at least 8 GB (gigabytes) of RAM. But,.... full article[searchstorage.techtarget.com]

Windows 10 Event Viewer

Don't over think this You’re sure to see some errors and warnings in Event Viewer, even if your computer is working fine. We are only checking for things we recognize like SKSE, Steam etc.

To view Windows 10 crash logs, you can make use of the built-in tool Event Viewer, which keeps a log of application and system messages, errors, warnings, etc. You can follow the steps below to check Windows crash logs Windows 10 with Event Viewer.

So if you're pulling your hair out trying to track down a CTD with your game this may help.

To open Event Viewer:

Step 1. Type Event Viewer in the Windows 10 Cortana search box. Then right click the best match Event Viewer and choose Run as Administrator. (Expand/maximize View)

Step 2. Here is the main interface of Event Viewer. On the left side of the window, you can view all the Logs according to the category. NOTE: To access the Application Logs once in Event Viewer, go to Windows Logs > Application, for shutdown errors refer to Application and System logs.

*Application: The Application log records events related to Windows system components, such as drivers and built-in interface elements.
*System: The System log records events related to programs installed on the system.
*Security: When security logging is enabled (it’s off by default in Windows), this log records events related to security, such as logon attempts and resource access.

You’re sure to see some errors and warnings in Event Viewer, even if your computer is working fine.

To access the Event Viewer in Windows 7:
Click Start > Control Panel > System and Security > Administrative Tools
Double-click Event Viewer
Select the type of logs that you wish to review (ex: Windows Logs)

NOTE: The Event Log service starts automatically when you start Windows. Application and System logs can be viewed by all users, but Security logs are accessible only to administrators. To access admin simply right click on the Event Viewer icon and choose run as administrator.

Wrong Skyrim Mods cause CRASH
Make sure you are using Mods for Skyrim Special Edition and Not Mods for Skyrim.
This causes many different problems and at it's worse will cause crashes.

There is a difference.

Skyrim Special Edition
Skyrim Special Edition[www.nexusmods.com]

This is an easy mistake to make and you'd be surprised how many times it is the culprit when it comes to modded game problems. Having the wrong game version of a mod can cause problems with your game and in many cases, depending on the type of mod, you can't even launch your game.

DONOT use these
Skyrim (A/K/A "Oldrim")[www.nexusmods.com]

Same with 'Off site" mods like LL.
Always make sure you are downloading & installing a mod for Skyrim Special Edition ONLY.

Wrye Bash

Q: Why make a section on Wrye Bash in the Help Guide instead of the Load Order guide like you did with Vortex and MO2?

A: There are a few reasons. Regardless if it's actually the case or not, over the years I have personally seen more folks have problems installing Wrye Bash than any other Mod Manager so of course I wanted to add some helpful info on WB. The reason I am adding it here is two fold, 1. Recently there as been some additional info surface (see Steam discussion link below) regarding leveled lists and the fact WB may no longer be your best option due to it leaving out some records. Since I have not used WB in ages, and even then is was for a minimal amount of time, I thought it best to be placed here.

Please read Steam advisory discussion on using Wrye Bash for a Bashed Patch:

Xbox - Disable Game Bar etc.

This section addresses 3 separate issues with 2 separate fixes in regards to Controller issues

Your Gamebar interface may look different but the settings are the same

The first solution is for better performance and will not effect your controller.

DISABLE Microsoft's Gaming "feature" IN WINDOWS 10
or what ever it's called in your settings (Xbox Game Bar, Game Mode, etc.)
If playing The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition on Widows 10, their Xbox Settings might have an impact on game performance. To disable the Xbox DVR, follow these instructions:

1. Right click the Start button
2. Click Settings
3. Select Gaming
4. YOUR OPTIONS HERE MAY VARY (you may not see a "Game DVR" option)
5. So what you are looking for is to turn "OFF" as many of the options as possible (Xbox Game Bar, Captures, Game Mode).

NOTE: this will not effect your controller

Your options may vary once you get to this window:

To Disable Controller
This solution will allow you to play with your keyboard & mouse

1. IF your Controller is plugged into your PC Make sure to unplug it.

2. Launch game, select escape and go to settings, uncheck the box that says gamepad/controller.

3. Go to C:\Users\Owner\Documents\My Games\Skyrim Special Edition and then open "SkyrimPrefs.ini". Scroll down to "MAIN" and under main make sure bGamepadEnable=0 if it's 1 change it to 0. Save and Exit.

4. Select the windows button>control panel>view devices and printers, and if you find a xbox controller or any type of controller right click it and select delete. (you can always reinstall it if needed) Now launch the game again and test.

5. You also can Go to your antivirus program and disable the "Firewall" and try that if it's still not working as intended if for no other reason than a test.

Want to play with Keyboard, Mouse, and Controller?
This solution will allow you to play with both keyboard & mouse + your controller
You don't need this but it makes switching back and forth much smoother and obviously you don't want to follow the above 5 steps which disable your controller. You should still disable the Game Bar.

Install this mod if you use a controller and constatly switch between KBM and your controller:
Auto Input Switch[www.nexusmods.com] Ever get annoyed that you can't use your mouse with your gamepad plugged in? Now you can switch between them painlessly.
Xbox one, Series X, & Elite Controllers

Your fix may not be listed on this page as there are so many fixes depending on what combination users have for their Steam PC gaming setup (key word being pc).

Want More Favorites Hotkeys on your D-pad?
Here's a tip from Vyxenne on the Nexus Forums
I use the great Oldrim mod Better Xbox360 Controller[www.nexusmods.com] - since it's just a Controlmap_Custom.txt (overrides Controlmap.txt), it works equally well in SSE with no conversion. It gives me all 8 Favorites Hotkeys on my D-pad, the last 4 via the LB as a combo key. Here's my controller scheme as a result:

Although the above scheme makes my keyboard almost irrelevant, I'm also using Keyboard Shortcuts Fix, which "gives me back" most of my KB keys even with the controller active. That said, I still have to disable the controller to do any key rebinds.

Is cleaning master files useless?

Important NOTE:
IF you see an error that looks something like the following:
"[00:00] Error saving Update.esm.save.2012_11_10_13_05_33: Cannot create file "C:\Program Files (x86)\The Elder Scrolls V Skyrim\Data\Update.esm.save.2012_11_10_13_05_33". Access is denied [00:00] Errors have occured. At least one file was not saved."

This is probably because you have your game and/or xEdit installed in Program Files.

THIS is what you can do:
You can right click on the (xEdit) desktop icon, choose advanced properties, and run as an administrator;

Problem buying propery from Steward
The following is taken from this Steam Forum thread

House buying problem (Don't take money, don't give key)

Ursprünglich geschrieben von Scorrp10:
Ok, The problem is in the HousePurchase quest, which DOES get overloaded by Unofficial SE patch (ESSEP) In the Whiterun branch, on player dialogue view"I'll take it" (Available on having enough gold etc), it is set to execute a fragment in TIF_000A7B1E script. Problem is , original Skyrim.esm indicates Fragment_0, whereas USSEP indicates Fragment_1. And of course, USSEP.bsa includes the version of that script that has Fragment _1. Except if you ever unpacked scripts.zip in your Data and did a recompile, you are back to original Fragment_0 script.
No idea why USSEP overloads it, cause its Fragment_1 and original Fragment_0 are identical.

What you can do:
Do into your Data/scripts. Look for TIF__A7B1E.pex and delete it.
While at it, remove
TIF__000A7B2A.pex (Windhelm)
TIF__000A851F.pex (Solitude)

Glossary (Skyrim Terms)

There are a decent amount of abbreviations, acronyms, keywords, and terms (whatever you want to call them) for Bethesda's 5th installment of The Elder Scrolls. Let's familiarize you with a few of them as they can be confusing at first.

listed alphabetically

BSA - Bethesda Softworks Archive. A compressed file you'll often see in many mods. Can include sounds, textures, models, etc.

CK - Creation Kit. This tool is used to edit & create Bethesda mods.

CTD - Crash to Desktop.

*CBBE - Caliente's Beautiful Body Enhancement. A popular female body type by Caliente. You'll also need a Skeleton and Texture for this mod as this is strictly a mesh.

*Directory - The location Skyrim is installed to on your PC. Your "root" Skyrim directory is where your Skyrim.exe file is located. see "Root"

DLL - Dynamic Link Library. Used often in mods

dds is a texture file.

DyndoLOD - Dynamic Distant Objects. Level of Detail

ENB - a lighting program that uses post process.

*ESP, *ESM, and *BSA - not always acronyms; usually file types .esp, .esm, and .bsa - (These are the basics if you want more info research them separately). The ESM file format stands for Elder Scrolls Master file. It has been in use since The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, & is used in conjunction with the ESP & BSA file formats. All ESPs require an ESM file in order to work. For example, Skyrim's ESM file is labeled Skyrim.esm, & is required to run all mods for Skyrim. BSA is an acronym for Bethesda Softworks Archive, BSA install-order doesn't matter, only Load order, and it & an extra .esp to the list.. There are also .esl files that are light plugins & do not take up a slot in your load order's 255 plugin limit.

*FOMOD - You will see this associated with some mod downloads. FOMOD is a mod-manager-specific archive format originally for the Fallout Mod Manager. The term "FOMOD Installer" has been adopted more recently by mod authors in Skyrim and Skyrim SE for their mods as an installation option for their mods that have various options during the install process (after download of course). These so called FOMOD installers in Skyrim are actually known as "Scripted Installers".

(Note: Many times you'll have the option to choose between letting the installer detect what is needed or choosing the options you want or that are appropriate for your load order.
Some users have reported that letting the FOMOD choose for you has not properly installed the mod properly. I can't say that I have experienced this issue but many times I do choose the option to let me pick as I go. Most if not all Scripted Installers should not be manually installed.

FPS - Frames Per Second

HKX - is a compressed XML data file used in Havok Physics engine video games. Data used to simulate real-world physics.

INI - A configuration file composed of sections, settings, and values.

ITMs - are Identical To Master records, ie. data in a plugin for something that is identical to the data for that thing in the plugin's master(s). Usually a type of unintended edit, known as a dirty edit, which can break the functionality of other mods that require the record in question to have a specific value, but which have that value overridden by an ITM record.

*Loot - Load Order Optimisation Tool. Does as the name implies, optimises your Load Order. So if someone should ask you if you sorted your load order with Loot you'll know what they mean. Loot will also give you plug-in warning & usage notes while telling you which plugins need cleaning with SSEEDIT
note: Vortex utilizes Loot code (built in) to automatically sort your load order. This does not mean you won't need Loot for detailed messages.

MCM - Mod Configuration Menu. Allows you to customize certain aspects of a mod in game.

.nif is a mesh file.

*Oldrim - (Also referred to as Legendary Edition) This is the way many in the modding community refer to the original 32bit version of Skyrim. For example you often will see text telling you to make sure you are not using the Oldrim version of a mod for SSE. This is because oldrim (Skyrim) is still very active in the community. This guide refers to the newer 64bit version, Skyrim Special Edition. Confused yet? Don't be, it all becomes second nature in no time.

*PLUGIN ESL ESM and ESP are all plugins however ESL's do not take up a load order slot. Most mods have a plugin and there is a 255 plugin limit for Skyrim however some mods like textures don't have a plugin unless for example the textures are particular in where they are to be placed. Usually texture mods do not have a plugin however. For more on plugins & the 255 limit you can read Arthmoor's information if you like. Plugin Files & You [www.afkmods.com]

*Root Folder - also called the root directory or sometimes just the root of any partition or folder is the "highest" directory in the hierarchy. You can also think of it in general as the start or beginning of a particular folder structure. It can be likened to the trunk of a tree, as the starting point where all branches originate from. For us it's the "Skyrim Special Edition" folder found at SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Skyrim Special Edition

*SSE and *SKSE64 - I am grouping these 2 together because the terms look so much alike to many that are new to the Skyrim modding community that they can be confusing. You should get used to these 2 terms as you will see them early and often. The First term SSE refers to this game, Skyrim Special Edition and the second term SKSE64 refers to the Skyrim Script Extender for SSE . Worse yet, there are several Script Extenders for example Oldrim uses SKSE. You must ALWAYS use SKSE64 with Skyrim Special Edition (SSE). Do not use SKSE for SSE. Got it? (I knew you would :))

UDR - Undeleted & Disabled References. Deleted References can cause crashes, and this can be avoided by first undeleting & then disabling them instead. A type of dirty edit. Note that this acronym does not refer to the deleted references themselves - it actually refers to their fixed counterparts. For example, Scan For UDRs will scan for deleted references, not undeleted and disabled references, and LOOT will report the UDR count for a plugin, which is actually the number of deleted references that can be fixed.

*UNP - Dimonized UNPretended (Variations: UNPB (UNP Blessed) UUNP etc.) female Body type (mesh replacer) by dimon99. You also need a Skeleton mod & Texture mod for this mod.

*USSEP - Refers to the "Unofficial Skyrim Special Edition Patch" : a mod that should be at the top of the list of most intelligent load orders. The USSEP is a mod that patches many of the problems that Bethesda did not address in the game originally. You'll read more about this later.
(Note: never use USLEEP, the "Unofficial Skyrim Legendary Edition Patch", for SSE)

*xEdit or *SSEEdit (in our case) - This tool is used for many functions which include editing and cleaning mods, creating patches, and applying scripts to mods. xEdit is the generic term and is used for various Bethesda games that are based on the same game engine. xEdit then takes on the name of that game accordingly, F4Edit for Fallout 4, SSEEdit for Skyrim Special Edition, FNVEdit for Fallout New Vegas, etc.

There you have it, if any were left off the above list you'll learn them soon enough or they will be added as needed in our ongoing update process.

Hey I had the same error code as many people and tried reinstall ... until I eventually started opening the falling and logs and figured out that SKSE wasn't doing anything at all, turns out my windows defenders anti ransomeware was slapping it the moment it wanted to edit something.
so if you're running into the same issue I ran into, simply check that nothing is blocking SKSE from doing it's job. it's always the simplest fix that works, made me feel dumb when checked it out on a random hunch

ran into this issue, thought I'd share since no one else solved the error this way or had this specific issue

@Ali Salar. Never saw this post before so I apologize. I'm glad you got it sorted out. And yes, once you turn off Steam Cloud saves you'll save yourself potential headaches. As for the method described in this guide - that method is for OneDrive which is not as simple "turn it off", otherwise there are issues down the line.

The important thing is that you can now play this game. Cheers my friend.
Ali Salar 11. Apr. 2023 um 6:29
Regarding my problem, I've found a solution like what is stated above but it's easier, just copy you "Mygames" file with Skyrim Special edition in it (if you have installed your modes and saves there and you need them, otherwise it's not necessary if you're playing for first time) then click on cloud icon on your screen (it's down there, next to notification and stuff) then it opens cloud, select the ⚙️ and select "Setting", select first option "Manage folders", now you unselect synchronization of Documents folder in there, after that select "Save changes", and we're done. Now you have a document folder in your pc which there's a cloud file in there, if you copied your Mygames file before, put it in Document and you can restore your progress. No need to restart or anything, only thing I did was having Steam closed the whole time, I also turned off Steam cloud save for Skyrim from Steam itself. Hope it helps you!

@@› Ali Salar™ - again (it's worth repeating) you can skip the part regarding mods but
ONLY IF you've never used mods at any time on your current PC.
Vlad 254  [Autor] 8. Nov. 2022 um 13:12
@› Ali Salar™ - You should try a clean vanilla reinstall following this guide.

But you must follow each and every step and that includes the steps in the video at the beginning of the guide. And of course all steps listed in the guide after the video. So everything start to finish in the guide. If you are not using mods and never have used mods you can skip that section which is under Vortex.
