Team Xtreme split up in 2002 after Matt Hardy attacked his brother Jeff out of frustration.

Out of the ashes of the successful tag team, Matt Hardy Version 1 was born. Hardy took on Mattitude Followers and cut weight in order to compete for the Cruiserweight title, which he would win in 2003.

Hardy left WWE in April 2005 after a public feud with his former best friend Edge and ex-girlfriend Lita. He returned to the company as a face a few months later to kick off a feud with Edge.

Matt reconciled with Jeff and reformed The Hardy Boyz, then moved on to a lengthy feud with MVP over the United States Championship. Matt and MVP held the WWE Tag Team Championship for a short time, allowing MVP to avoid US Title matches with his partner while he stated he was focused on the tag belts.

In 2008, Matt was drafted by ECW and eventually became the brand's champion, winning a championship scramble to take the title from Mark Henry. He held the ECW Championship until early 2009 when he was defeated by the up-and-coming Jack Swagger.

Matt turned on Jeff once more after losing his title, and two began a feud that included an Extreme Rules match at WrestleMania XXV. Matt left WWE in late 2010 and debuted in TNA a few months later as part of Immortal.
