Historical Italian Ships of The Regia Marina: A dream of Mare Nostrum
От Kåra
The Italian Navy was one of the major belligerents of the Mediterranean during the Second World War; during the three-year-long struggle for dominance the Italians lost; will you take control of the Regina Marina and dominate the Middle Sea?

The Regia Marina in 1936
At the outbreak of the second world war in 1939, Fascist Italy found itself as a spectator.
It was not until the German triumph over Franc in the spring of 1940 that Italy decided to join the war. The Italian Navy was one of the worlds largest and was one of the signatories of the Second London Naval Agreement (although they never followed the limitations of any of the preceding treaties).

The Italian Navy had an old and conservative leadership invested little in RADAR and electronic technology before the war.

Aircraft Carriers
As the Regina Marina was designed to operate in the Mediterranean, it was deemed sufficient to use land-based aircraft. However, the RM designed an aircraft carrier, the Gagnotto Class, during the heightened tension of the Italian-Ethiopian War. And had laid plans to convert the liner "Roma". It was not until the Raid on Taranto and the defeat at Cape Matapan that Italy seriously reconsidereds its reluctance towards carriers.

Gagnotto Class - Liner Conversion
Planned: 2
Completed: 0
The first plans to convert the Sparviero and Aquila. Discarded in favour of the Littorio Class battleship(s).

Heavy Cruisers (CA)
The heavy cruiser branch of the Regina Marina is historically completed at the beginning of the Game. With Bolzano as the last heavy cruiser built.

San Georgio / San Marco
Constructed: 2
Remaining: 1
The second "San Georgio"-class ship is strangely not constructed at game-start, even while the ship was one of the older armoured cruisers of the Italian Navy - and that her sister ship, San Georgio already is constructed.
Thus her name pops up during the Light Cruiser construction chain as "San Marco".
The ship was historically set up as a targeting ship in the 1920s and repatriated in 1943 by Nazi-Germany shortly before scuttling her again.

The Italian navy rarely left port. when it did it got wiped out in 5 mins by a royal navy taskforce that ambushed it.
Royal navy lured the fleet out with smaller ships and kept their carriers and big ships out of sight then pulled back and used radar to track it as Italy didnt have any radar on their ships. then as night fell the royal navy snuck up on it and at point blank range turned on its searchlights and lit up the Italian fleet and opened fire from all sides and sank the whole fleet in 5 mins and the Italians didnt even get a shot off. Most of Italies big ships were in port being repaired after they were hit by bombs and torpedoes from British carrier planes. But a couple of the cruisers got sunk in that battle and the Italian navy ceased to exist as a fighting force.
